Zoologica Scripta
Zoologica Scripta (commonly abbreviated as Zool. Scr.) is a peer-reviewed academic journal published by Wiley on behalf of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, established in 1971 and issued bimonthly. Centred on systematic zoology, it is the direct continuation of the Nordic tradition of zoological publishing.《动物学志》(Zoologica Scripta,常用缩写为 Zool. Scr.)
Scope
The journal takes systematic questions themselves as its orientation, requiring that a paper pose or test a substantive claim about evolutionary relationships, patterns of classification or nomenclature rather than merely record species. The publisher states plainly that purely taxonomic papers are not considered and that new species descriptions may appear only as supplementary material, an unusual threshold among zoological journals.
- Animal systematics and phylogeny: taxonomic revision, the integrated analysis of morphological and molecular evidence, phylogenetic inference, and the estimation of divergence times.
- Phylogeography and biogeography: population history, phylogeographic pattern, the evolution of ranges, and their relation to palaeoclimate and geological events.
- Nomenclature and method: naming questions under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, standards of classification, and the development of phylogenetic methodology itself.
- Ecological and ecosystem context of diversification: adaptive radiation, niche divergence, speciation, and their relation to ecosystem structure.
- Extinct taxa and conservation application: the systematic placement of extinct and fossil groups, and application notes on the use of taxonomy in biodiversity conservation.
The journal is a hybrid title. The subscription route charges authors nothing, while open access carries an article processing charge of US$4,300, and the platform maintains a dedicated open access articles section. The publisher states an official acceptance rate of 36 per cent and a median of 8 days from submission to first decision, a figure that includes editorial desk review, since the website states plainly that manuscripts insufficiently focused on the journal's scope may be returned without external review. It should not be read as a measure of external review time.
History
- Founding (1971): the first issue of volume one was in fact published in December 1971, the first volume spanning 1971 and 1972, which is why the German serials database records it as the 1971/72 volume. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences lists the journal as beginning in 1972, a conventional citation year rather than the catalogued start. [1]
- Predecessor: the formal predecessor is the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences' Arkiv för zoologi (ISSN 0004-2110), founded in 1903 and published independently until 1974, running alongside the present journal for four years, a succession rather than a renaming. The commonly encountered claim of an 1948 founding is unsupported by any authoritative source. [2]
- Absorption of a sister journal (1977): Norwegian Journal of Zoology, published independently from 1971 to 1976, was absorbed into this journal in 1977, creating a single outlet for systematic zoology under the two academies of Norway and Sweden. [1]
- Publisher history: the journal was published by Almqvist & Wiksell in Stockholm from 1971 to 1981, moved to Pergamon in Oxford from 1982 to 1998, was subsequently taken over by Blackwell and ultimately joined the Wiley portfolio, undergoing the full evolution from print to electronic publishing. [1]
- Subtitle change: the publisher now uses the subtitle An International Journal of Systematic Zoology, while the evolutionary zoology subtitle recorded in the library is the earlier one. The change corresponds to the selection threshold described above and marks the journal's return to a systematic basis. [3]
- Metric trend: the impact factor eased from 3.185 in 2021 to 2 in both 2024 and 2025, with 2.3 in 2023 and 2.5 in 2022. In the 2025 Chinese Academy of Sciences ranking, zoology is placed in zone 1 and evolutionary biology in zone 3. [3]
- Conference activity: the journal held a symposium in Oslo on 25 August 2022 on the role of systematics in understanding ecosystem function, with the proceedings published in volume 52, issue 3 of the same year. [4]
Editors
The journal uses the titles chief editor and executive editors rather than the usual editor-in-chief and associate editors, a nomenclature characteristic of Nordic academy journals. Representatives of the two sponsoring academies take part in editorial decisions, giving the journal its cross-national academy setting. Manuscripts are submitted through the ScholarOne Manuscripts system.
- Lutz Bachmann (chief editor since 2023): senior curator at the Natural History Museum of the University of Oslo, working on arthropod systematics and molecular barcoding. His inaugural editorial appeared in volume 52, issue 3. [5]
- Torsten H. Struck and Hege Vårdal (current executive editors): the former is based at the Natural History Museum of the University of Oslo, working on annelid phylogeny and comparative genomics, and the latter at the Swedish Museum of Natural History, working on arachnid systematics. [5]
- Per Sundberg (former chief editor): professor at the University of Gothenburg, who moved to the advisory council after stepping down. During his tenure the journal's shift toward a systematic basis was carried through. [5]
- Nomenclature position statement: the website issues an explicit statement on the controversy over whether refusing purely taxonomic records remains effective under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, an unusually public position for a systematic journal. [6]
- Standing in the field: one of the longest-established journals in animal systematics, it stands as the direct continuation of the Nordic tradition of zoological publishing, and its papers routinely serve as base citations for later taxonomic revisions and nomenclatural rulings. [3]
