Zieve's syndrome

Zieve syndrome is an acute alcohol-related metabolic disorder defined by the triad of haemolytic anaemia with spur cells, hyperlipoproteinaemia and jaundice, and abdominal pain is a frequent accompanying feature.

The syndrome arises during sustained heavy drinking or alcohol withdrawal and usually resolves within weeks of abstinence, which distinguishes it from progressive forms of alcoholic liver disease.

Leslie Zieve first described the combination in 1958, and although the eponym is widely recognised, the disorder remains uncommon in clinical series and is probably underdiagnosed.
