History
- Yeshiva University traces itself to the Etz Chaim Yeshiva, a cheder-style elementary school founded in 1886 on the Lower East Side of Manhattan by Eastern European immigrants who wanted Talmud study taught alongside instruction in English, and it was the first full-time Jewish day school of its kind in the United States.
- Before 1886 American Jews had only supplementary schools organised by synagogues, and the name Etz Chaim, meaning the Tree of Life drawn from the Book of Proverbs, was already customary for congregations and schools alike.1886 年以前美国犹太人只有各犹太会堂开办的补习学校,而取自《箴言》、意为生命之树的 Etz Chaim 一名早已通用于会堂与学校。
- Because graduates had nowhere in America to continue Jewish studies, a circle of students learning in a rabbi's lodgings was formalised in 1896 into a course of study above the high-school level, and in 1897 the institution was chartered in New York State as the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, named for a renowned Eastern European rabbi who had died that year and today known by the abbreviation RIETS.
- The seminary's first rabbis graduated in 1903, and between 1906 and 1915 its board accepted repeated student demands to add practical rabbinic subjects, giving the university its enduring double character as both a traditional Talmudic academy and a rabbinical seminary.
- In 1915 the seminary merged with the original elementary school and was renamed Rabbi Yeshiva College of America, a title that legal considerations soon returned to Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, while the elementary division was separated out in the 1920s as new Jewish day schools multiplied.1915 年神学院与原先的小学合并并改称美国拉比学院,但因法律原因校名很快恢复为艾萨克·埃尔哈南拉比神学院,而小学部随着犹太小学的增多在 1920 年代被分出。
- The merged college's first president was Bernard Revel, who took office in 1915 at about thirty years of age after earning rabbinic ordination in Lithuania as a teenager and a doctorate in Jewish studies in Philadelphia.

- While Revel was spending part of his time on family oil interests in Oklahoma, the American head of the Mizrahi movement served as acting president and folded the movement's teachers' colleges for men and for women into the institution, the women's normal school later developing into Stern College for Women.
- Yeshiva College was established in 1928 to offer an advanced course of Talmudic study together with a secular university curriculum ending in a bachelor's degree, and in the same decade the university left the Lower East Side for Washington Heights in upper Manhattan, where the main campus still houses the central offices, the main library, the men's undergraduate school, the boys' high school and the rabbinical seminary.
- The Great Depression that began in 1929 made the building costs of the new site a severe burden and the campus was not enlarged again until the 1960s, although in 1936 the university opened its first graduate school of Jewish studies and immigrants fleeing the Holocaust in Europe helped found new Judaic and secular departments.
