Wildlife Research
Wildlife Research is an international journal devoted to the ecology, management and conservation of wild animals living in natural as well as in modified habitats.《野生动物研究》是一份面向野生动物生态学、管理和保护研究的国际期刊,刊载对象覆盖自然栖息地与经过改造的生境中的动物种群。
The journal sets out to combine basic research in wildlife ecology with advances in science-based management practice, and it asks that every contribution carry a usable implication for how wild animals are handled.
Published in Australia by CSIRO Publishing, the publishing arm of the national science agency, it has carried the present title since 1974 and traces its lineage to a wildlife series begun in 1956.
Recent bibliographic measures place it mid-field among ecological titles, with about 90 papers a year, a 2025 impact factor of 1.9, and most new content released openly.
Scope
- The core remit is applied ecology: population dynamics, behaviour, habitat use and community interactions of wild animals, framed so that ecological inference can be reused inside a management decision.
- Conservation biology of threatened fauna occupies a central place, with status assessments of small populations and analyses of the threats that keep them small.
- A large share of the space is given to species that are over-abundant, introduced or treated as pests, including feral cats, wild boar, feral goats and rabbits, where control methods and their ecological consequences are tested rather than merely described.
- Monitoring design is a recurring subject, with papers on occupancy and detectability, statistical power, indexing principles and the interpretation of counts for rare or cryptic species.
- Recovery of depleted populations is covered through head-starting, reintroduction, translocation and meta-population genetic planning, with demographic rescue treated as a testable option rather than a slogan.
- Much of the work is set in multi-use landscapes and production forests, rangelands and tropical savannas, where grazing, fire regime, forestry and conservation objectives meet.
- Predation and trophic relationships attract sustained attention, from dingo re-establishment and mesopredator release to the effect of hunting dogs and introduced predators on native prey.
- Diseases and their impacts on wildlife populations form a declared subject area, and recent issues extend from parasitism to the microbiome of native mammals and the antimicrobial resistance found within it.
- Global change and wildlife management are treated together, including climate-driven shifts in species distributions, extreme weather events, and modelling of future ranges for threatened animals.
- The human dimensions of conservation are in scope, alongside studies of sensory pollution, traffic noise, visitor pressure in protected areas and other disturbances that act on animal signalling.
- Methodological contributions are welcome, covering camera-trap surveys, comparisons of automated image analysis against conventional reading, scat detection dogs, and DNA metabarcoding of diets.
- Coverage is not restricted to terrestrial fauna: sharks, seals, marine reptiles and migratory species appear whenever the question concerns the ecology or management of a wild population.
- Assessing management outcomes and tracing the implications of wildlife research for policy development are explicit aims, and evaluation papers are expected to state what an intervention achieved and at what scale.
- Although Australian animals such as koalas, numbats, echidnas and grassland lizards are heavily represented, the journal presents itself as a title for wildlife scientists, students, managers, consultants and government advisers everywhere.
History
- The lineage begins in March 1956 with C.S.I.R.O. Wildlife Research, a series issued by the wildlife research programme of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation under ISSN 0007-9103.
- Those early volumes were practical in character, carrying live-trapping trials, sampling methods for rabbits and their insect associates, and technique notes such as the use of chloral hydrate to anaesthetise mammals for marking.
- The corvid programme of the 1960s filled several consecutive issues with a multi-part study of the comparative ecology of Australian corvids, and it shows how quickly the series moved from technique toward field ecology.1960 年代以多篇文章形式展开的鸦科动物比较生态研究占去连续数期,显示这份丛刊从技术记录转向野外生态学的速度之快。[1]
- Volume 18, dated 1973, closed that series, and the title was relaunched as Wildlife Research in 1974 with the volume count reset to 1 and the first number dated February.
- The relaunched journal kept the same publishing institution, took the print ISSN 1035-3712, and has numbered one volume per year since, so volume 53 corresponds to 2026.
- Publication was slow at first, since volume 7 in 1980 was delivered in three numbers, and that three-number rhythm still held at volume 12 in 1985.
- The cadence quickened in the late 1980s, six numbers a year being reached at volume 15 in 1988 and remaining normal at volume 17 in 1990, a bimonthly pattern carried by bibliographic descriptions of the journal for decades afterwards.
- Eight issues a year were in place by 2005 and were still standard in the 2010s, as volume 32 and volume 42 each show, while annual volume numbering never changed.
- Electronic delivery added a second identifier, ISSN 1448-5494, and articles are registered under the shared CSIRO prefix 10.1071 with numbers keyed to the manuscript code, as in 10.1071/wr25191.
- Volume 50 carried ten numbers in 2023 and volume 51 carried twelve in 2024, so the journal moved to twelve issues a year without abandoning the annual volume scheme.
- Indicator data for 2025 list 3831 citations, 92 citable items, a Journal Citation Indicator of 0.72 and an article half-life of 12.1 years.2025 年的指标数据记录被引 3831 次,可被引条目 92 条,期刊引文指标 0.72,论文半衰期 12.1 年。
- The impact factor fell from 2.178 in 2022 to 1.6 for 2023 and 2024 before recovering to 1.9 with a five-year value of 2.1, and the journal is placed in Zoology as well as Ecology.
- Gold open access reached 60.74 per cent of 2025 content, a marked departure from the subscription-only arrangement the title kept for most of its existence.2025 年内容中金色开放获取占比达 60.74%,与该刊长期维持的纯订阅制安排形成明显反差。
Editors
- The editorial office sits with the publisher in Melbourne, recorded in bibliographic directories as Collingwood, Victoria 3066, and it handles correspondence for both authors and referees.
- Manuscripts reach the office through the publisher's ScholarOne workspace for the journal at mc.manuscriptcentral.com/csiro-wr, and the mailbox publishing.wr@csiro.au answers enquiries beforehand.稿件经由出版商为该刊配置的 ScholarOne 工作区投至 mc.manuscriptcentral.com/csiro-wr,正式投稿前的询问可发给邮箱 publishing.wr@csiro.au。
- Refereeing is organised by the journal editors together with an international editorial board, so a paper on, say, an invasive ungulate and a paper on shark tagging pass through different subject routes.
- Editorial screening follows the declared subject areas, so applied ecology, conservation biology, ecosystem management, pest and invasive species control, wildlife disease and the human dimensions of management are read as core business.
- Accepted formats are stated as structured field studies, manipulative experiments, and analytical or modelling papers, with shorter debate pieces kept alongside them to argue contested management questions.
- Editors weigh two demands on each manuscript, namely improvement of the practice of wildlife management and a conceptual advance in the understanding of wildlife ecology.
- Editorial handling reflects the taxonomic spread of the journal, whose published content runs from monotremes and passerines to elasmobranchs, grassland reptiles and colonial seabirds.
- Published authorship is dominated by Australian institutions, yet topics such as wild boar in south-eastern Europe and red fox occupancy in North America show that editorial scope is not regional.
- Articles are released with a DOI before being gathered into a numbered issue, and the publisher's house style governs reference formatting and figure preparation for the bound volume.
- The journal operates as a hybrid title, with authors choosing an open-access licence at acceptance, and the publisher's own journal data give an average of 27 days from acceptance to publication.
