Virtual and Physical Prototyping is a continuously published, fully open access journal of Taylor and Francis, launched in 2006 and devoted to virtual, rapid and additive prototyping across manufacturing engineering and materials science, placed in the first quartile of two Journal Citation Reports categories with a 2025 Journal Impact Factor of 9.8《虚拟与物理原型》（Virtual and Physical Prototyping）是（Taylor & Francis）旗下连续出版的全开放获取期刊，2006 年创刊，专注虚拟原型、快速原型与增材制造，横跨制造工程与材料科学，在两个 JCR 学科类别中均列 Q1，2025 年影响因子为 9.8。

Scope

• The journal provides an international forum in which professionals and academics exchange novel ideas and disseminate knowledge covering the full range of activities related to the multidisciplinary area of virtual and rapid prototyping该刊为专业人士与学者搭建国际交流平台，围绕虚拟与快速原型这一多学科领域交流新思想、传播知识，覆盖与之相关的全部活动。
• Its stated scope runs from additive manufacturing design, such as topology optimisation, lightweight structures, biomimetic design and functionally graded structures, through 4D printing with smart materials and shape memory polymers or alloys, to multi-material printing and hybrid manufacturing其既定范围包括增材制造设计（拓扑优化、轻量化结构、仿生设计与功能梯度结构）、以智能材料与形状记忆聚合物或合金实现的 4D 打印，以及多材料打印与混合制造。

History

• The idea came from Paulo Bartolo, then head of the mechanical engineering department at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria in Portugal, who organised the 2003 International Conference on Advanced Research in Virtual and Rapid Prototyping and its second edition two years later创办该刊的构想来自时任葡萄牙莱里亚理工学院（Polytechnic Institute of Leiria）机械工程系主任（Paulo Bartolo），他于 2003 年组织虚拟与快速原型高级研究国际会议（VRAP），两年后又举办第二届。
• The journal started in 2006 under a pair of editors-in-chief, Paulo Bartolo and Chua Chee Kai, who alternated the editorial duty of each issue and co-wrote the editorial of every edition, and whose inaugural issue of March 2006 carried an editorial and five papers该刊 2006 年创刊，由（Paulo Bartolo）与（Chua Chee Kai）两位联合主编共同主持，两人轮流负责每期编审并合作撰写每期社论，2006 年 3 月的创刊号刊出一篇社论与五篇论文。
• When the joint technical committee of ASTM F42 and ISO TC261 fixed additive manufacturing as the common term in 2009, the vocabulary the journal was named for fell out of use, and the editors chose to keep the original title rather than rename it because quality mattered more than name2009 年，（ASTM）F42 与（ISO）TC261 的联合技术委员会将增材制造定为统一术语，该刊名称所依托的词汇随之成为历史，编辑部认为期刊质量远比名称重要，决定保留原刊名而不更名。
• A reform from 2015 widened the board with additive manufacturing specialists, balanced regional representation and refocused the journal on that single field, the title entered the Emerging Sources Citation Index in 2018 and later the Science Citation Index Expanded, and its first impact factor of 6.825 arrived in June 20202015 年起改革编委会，吸纳增材制造专家、均衡地域代表性，并把选题集中于该领域；该刊 2018 年被（ESCI）收录，其后升入（SCIE），2020 年 6 月获得首个影响因子 6.825。
• Submissions then shifted from the West to the East, and papers from China came to supply about half of the articles published, overtaking those from the United States and the United Kingdom此后投稿趋势由西方转向东方，中国论文约占该刊刊发论文的一半，超过美国与英国。
• The publisher has not changed since launch, for the articles of volume 1 in 2006 and of volume 21 in 2026 are both deposited under the Taylor and Francis DOI prefix 10.1080创刊以来出版方未变，2006 年第 1 卷与 2026 年第 21 卷的文章均以（Taylor & Francis）的 DOI 前缀 10.1080 存缴。

Editors

• Chua Chee Kai is the editor-in-chief, a fellow of the Singapore Academy of Engineering who worked at Nanyang Technological University and at the Singapore University of Technology and Design before joining Wuhan University of Science and Technology full time in October 2025（Chua Chee Kai）（蔡志楷）任主编，为新加坡工程院院士，曾任职于新加坡南洋理工大学（Nanyang Technological University）与新加坡科技设计大学（Singapore University of Technology and Design），2025 年 10 月起全职加入武汉科技大学。
• He edited the journal alone after Paulo Bartolo stepped down as co-editor-in-chief and took the honorary rank of founding editor, a handover planned because submissions from Asia were expected to grow（Paulo Bartolo）卸任联合主编后转任荣誉性质的创始编辑，他预见亚洲来稿将大幅增长，遂由（Chua Chee Kai）独自担任主编。
• He is at the same time editor-in-chief of International Journal of Bioprinting and of Materials Science in Additive Manufacturing他同时担任（International Journal of Bioprinting）与（Materials Science in Additive Manufacturing）两刊主编。
• Manuscripts are screened by the editor-in-chief and then refereed anonymously by independent expert referees drawn from a board that was enlarged in 2015 and that counted seven members based in mainland China in early 2025稿件先由主编初筛，再由独立专家匿名评审；编委会经 2015 年扩充，2025 年初有 7 位编委来自中国大陆。
• The editorial office is run by the publisher at Abingdon in England, and the journal asks authors to send supplementary data, colour figures, animation and video material with each submission编辑部设在英国阿宾登（Abingdon）的出版方处，该刊要求作者随投稿一并提交补充数据、彩色图件、动画与视频材料。
