University of Petra

The University of Petra (UOP), also rendered as Petra University, is a private university on Airport Road in Amman, Jordan, founded in 1991 as the Jordan University for Girls and coeducational since 1999. It has nine faculties and about 7,000 students, and the more than 24,000 degrees it has awarded since 2002 include bachelor's and master's qualifications in pharmacy, engineering, law, media and the arts. History

• The university's founding belonged to a wave of private higher-education expansion in Jordan in the early 1990s, when the kingdom encouraged non-government institutions to meet rising demand for places.
