History
- The Legislature chartered the university on 24 February 1844 and planners chose an isolated rural site west of Oxford as a sylvan exile, residents of Lafayette County donated the land in 1845, and architect William Nichols supervised the Lyceum, two dormitories and faculty residences from 1846, with the first 80 students arriving on 6 November 1848, most of them children of elite slaveholders.
- For 23 years the university was the only public institution of higher learning in Mississippi and for 110 years the only comprehensive university in the state, and in 1854 it opened a law school that became the fourth state-supported law school in the United States.
- The early president Frederick A. P. Barnard sought to raise the standing of the institution and his hundred-page report of 1858 produced little more than a change in the title of its head to chancellor, while his Massachusetts birth, his Yale degree and his Union sympathies brought him into conflict with the state legislature.
- After Abraham Lincoln won the 1860 presidential election Mississippi became the second state to secede, with the articles of secession drafted by the university's mathematics professor Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar, and students formed a military company called the University Greys that was absorbed into the Confederate army.1860 年林肯当选美国总统后,密西西比成为第二个脱离联邦的州,其脱离宣言由该校数学教授卢基乌斯·昆图斯·辛辛纳图斯·拉马尔起草,学生则组成名为「University Greys」的连队并编入南方联盟军。
- Within a month of the outbreak of civil war only five students remained, the university closed by the autumn of 1861, and its final act before closing was to award Barnard a doctorate of divinity, after which the campus was converted into a Confederate hospital within six months.
- The hospital was evacuated in November 1862 as Ulysses S. Grant approached, troops from Kansas destroyed much of the medical equipment, and a single remaining professor persuaded Grant not to burn the campus, while more than 700 wounded soldiers died and were buried on the grounds during the war.1862 年 11 月,联邦将领尤利西斯·S·格兰特率军逼近时医院撤离,来自堪萨斯的部队毁坏了大量医疗设备,校内一位留守教授说服格兰特没有焚烧校园,整个战争期间有 700 多名伤员在校内去世并安葬于此。
- The university reopened in October 1865, lowered admission standards and removed tuition so that veterans could enrol, but in 1870 the chancellor declared that he and the whole faculty would resign rather than admit Black students, and the student body stayed entirely white for decades.

- Between 1900 and 1930 the Mississippi Legislature repeatedly introduced bills to relocate, close or merge the university with Mississippi State University and every one failed, and in the 1930s Governor Theodore G. Bilbo dismissed administrators and faculty in the Bilbo purge, damaging the university's standing so badly that it temporarily lost its accreditation.1900 至 1930 年间,密西西比州议会多次提出迁移、关闭或将该校与密西西比州立大学合并的议案,均告失败,1930 年代州长西奥多·G·毕尔博在「毕尔博清洗」中解职多名行政人员与教职人员,使学校声誉受损并一度失去认证资格。
