University of Leicester

The University of Leicester is a public research university in Leicester, England, established as Leicestershire and Rutland University College in 1921 and granted full university status by royal charter in 1957, with its main campus a mile south of the city centre beside Victoria Park.

Its foundation was a memorial to the people of Leicester who served and died in the First World War: the worsted manufacturer Thomas Fielding Johnson bought 37 acres (15 hectares) of land for £40,000, and when the college opened in October 1921 it had only fourteen members of staff and students in all.

The university is known worldwide for the invention of genetic fingerprinting by Sir Alec Jeffreys in 1984 and for the excavation and DNA identification of the remains of King Richard III in 2012, and it stands 314th in the 2027 QS World University Rankings.
