University of California, San Diego (UCSD)

The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) is a public land-grant research university in La Jolla, a coastal district of San Diego, California, and one of the ten general campuses of the University of California system, formally established on 18 November 1960 as a graduate-centred experimental campus that grew out of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Its founding is inseparable from the oceanographer Roger Revelle, who as director of Scripps campaigned through the 1950s to place a full University of California campus on the coastal mesa above the institution, and it admitted its first cohort of graduate students in physics, chemistry and earth sciences before welcoming 181 undergraduates in 1964.

With 45,273 students enrolled in Fall 2024, more than 1,600 ladder-rank and clinical faculty, over 1.7 billion dollars in annual research funding and a placing of 81st in the QS World University Rankings 2027, UC San Diego is one of the largest and most research-intensive public universities in the United States.
