University of California, Davis
The University of California, Davis is a public land-grant research university in the Davis area of California, founded in 1905 as an agricultural branch of the University of California and made the sixth general campus of the system in 1959, and it is the northernmost of the ten University of California campuses as well as the largest by area.
In the autumn of 2023 the campus enrolled 40,848 students, of whom 31,797 were undergraduates and 7,912 were postgraduates, taught by 2,175 faculty, and it runs the largest veterinary school in the United States, more than ninety research graduate programmes and a library system holding over 3.5 million volumes.2023 年秋季该校在校生为 40,848 人,其中本科生 31,797 人、研究生 7,912 人,教职人员 2,175 人;学校拥有全美规模最大的兽医学院、九十多个科研型研究生项目,以及藏书逾 350 万册的图书馆系统。
History
- The university's agricultural roots begin in 1868, when the University of California created a College of Agriculture as required by the Morrill Land-Grant Acts, and Ezra S. Carr, the first professor of agriculture, was dismissed in 1874 after trying to fuse hands-on farm training with courses in the social and political history of farming, an argument his colleagues and the state farmers never accepted.
- Eugene W. Hilgard, who succeeded Carr, argued that the Berkeley site lay in a belt of extreme coastal climate unsuited to farming and replaced practical instruction with the scientific principles of agriculture studied in the laboratory, and although he had scorned the idea of a university farm, in his last report as dean in 1905 he conceded that one had become a pressing need.
- Peter J. Shields, secretary of the California Agricultural Society, began pressing for a university farm around 1900 after learning that students were leaving the state to attend comparable farms elsewhere, and he was honoured as the founder of the campus when the Shields Oak Grove was named for him in 1962, with the campus library following in 1972.
- George Washington Pierce Jr., a local farmer and politician who fought aggressively for the farm in the California State Assembly, ensured that the site criteria in the University Farm Bill were drawn so tightly that only the small town of Davisville in Yolo County could satisfy them, and he did not live to see the promotion of Davis to a general campus.
- The University Farm Bill was enacted on 18 March 1905, calling for a farm typical of the best general agricultural conditions in California and appropriating 150,000 dollars, a committee of the regents spent a year choosing a site of 779 acres from the stock farm of Jerome C. Davis, took possession in September 1906 and built four buildings in 1907.《大学农场法案》于 1905 年 3 月 18 日通过,规定要建立一座代表加州最佳一般农业条件的农场,并拨款 15 万美元。
- Short courses were first offered at the farm in October and November 1908, and the Farm School opened for instruction on 5 January 1909 as an agricultural secondary school with a three-year course for farm boys of at least fifteen, its first class consisting of eighteen young men because the original dormitories could not take girls.
- The minimum age of entry rose from fifteen to eighteen in 1913, Berkeley women first visited the farm for a few months in 1914, women joined the farmers' short courses in 1917 and the Farm School first admitted girls in 1918, and in May 1922 the school was formally terminated after graduating a final class of 97 students.1913 年入学最低年龄由十五岁提高到十八岁;1914 年伯克利的学生首次到农场短期学习,1917 年女性开始参加面向农民的短期课程,1918 年农场学校首次招收女生;1922 年 5 月,农场学校在送走 97 人的最后一届毕业生后正式终止。
- The two-year vocational programme that replaced the school issued certificates rather than degrees, and the campus expanded at a breakneck pace, from 314 students on the original 778 acres in 1916 to about 3,000 acres by 1951, while its name changed from University Farm to the Northern Branch of the College of Agriculture in 1922 and to the College of Agriculture at Davis in 1938.
- Students from the College of Agriculture at Berkeley had enrolled at Davis for a single semester since 1909 to gain practical training on a real farm, but had to return to Berkeley to be awarded their degrees, and after pressure from agricultural interests the regents authorised a two-year undergraduate programme in 1922, with the first class of degree students graduating in 1926.
- The two campuses are 53 miles apart and a new bridge over the Carquinez Strait in 1927 shortened the drive between them, which allowed faculty to hold joint appointments at both, a sharing that explains why Davis developed its own identity without the inferiority complex that shaped the University of California at Los Angeles during the system-wide decentralisation of 1957 to 1960.
- The state legislature authorised a veterinary school at Davis in 1941, but its launch was delayed by American entry into the Second World War, and in 1943 the United States Army Signal Corps took over the campus as a training facility, returning it to civilian use only at the end of 1944.
- From 1926 to 1947 every Davis student earning a bachelor's degree had to travel to Berkeley for the ceremony, until in 1948 the regents agreed to decentralise graduations and University of California president Robert Gordon Sproul awarded 101 bachelor of science degrees in agriculture at Davis together with 195 certificates from the two-year vocational programme.1926 至 1947 年,戴维斯所有本科毕业生都必须赴伯克利参加授予仪式;1948 年校董会同意下放毕业授予权,加州大学校长罗伯特·戈登·斯普劳尔在戴维斯颁出 101 个农业科学学士学位,并向两年制职业项目毕业生颁出 195 张证书。
- The campus expanded westward in 1949 by buying the 526-acre Straloch Farm from Harry Hopkins, which came with an 86-acre private airport he had built in 1946, and that airport remains the only one in the University of California system.1949 年,学校从哈里·霍普金斯手中买下 526 英亩的斯特拉洛克农场,使校区向西扩展;农场内还有霍普金斯 1946 年修建的 86 英亩私人机场,该机场至今仍是加州大学系统内唯一的机场。
- The head of the Davis campus was first a director reporting to the dean at Berkeley, became an assistant dean in 1944 and a provost in 1951, and in May 1952 the university appointed Harry R. Wellman its first vice-president for agricultural sciences, a division that brought the colleges at Berkeley, Davis, Los Angeles and Riverside together with the extension field stations and the county farm offices under one head.
- Stanley B. Freeborn served as the first provost from 1952 to 1958 and then as the first chancellor from 1958 to 1959 in anticipation of general-campus status, retiring after a single year and dying in the following year, while the two-year vocational programme that had lost its market closed with the last certificates awarded in 1960.
- In October 1959 the regents formally designated Davis a general campus and vested its chancellor with the autonomy enjoyed at Berkeley and Los Angeles, declaring that the College of Agriculture would remain the university's major centre of teaching and research in agriculture and setting an enrolment target of 6,000 students by 1970.1959 年 10 月,校董会正式把戴维斯定为普通校区,其校长获得与伯克利、洛杉矶同等的自主权;校董会同时声明农业学院将继续作为学校农业教学与研究的中心,并把 1970 年的招生目标定为 6,000 人。
- Emil M. Mrak, chancellor from 1959 to 1969, rode a bicycle among the orchards of his childhood in the Santa Clara Valley and worked hard to make the campus bicycle friendly, and after his retirement the administration building was named Mrak Hall in his honour, while a Graduate Division was created in 1961, the College of Engineering in 1962, the Law School in 1966 and the School of Medicine in 1968.1959 至 1969 年任校长的埃米尔·M·姆拉克,童年常在圣克拉拉谷的果园中骑自行车,上任后着力把校园打造为适合骑行的环境;他退休后,行政楼以姆拉克之名命名。
- A Native American studies programme started in 1969, one of the first at a major American university and later developed into a full department, and the campus also became the site of the 2011 pepper spray episode in which a police lieutenant sprayed seated demonstrators, followed by a public records disclosure in 2016 that showed the university had spent at least 175,000 dollars trying to scrub negative postings from the internet.1969 年,学校创办了美裔印第安人研究项目,是美国大型大学中最早的一批,后来发展成完整的系。
- In February 2017 Gary S. May was named the seventh chancellor after a nationwide search and took office on 1 August as the second African American to lead a University of California campus, and the university has since faced the 2022 teaching assistants strike that ended in a tentative agreement on 16 December and the 2023 Davis stabbings.2017 年 2 月,经全国遴选,加里·S·梅被任命为第七任校长,并于 8 月 1 日就职,成为第二位执掌加州大学校区的非裔人士。
- The most recent structural change is the redevelopment of West Campus, where a 300 million dollar public-private partnership has created what is described as the largest zero net energy community in the United States, planned for 3,000 students, faculty and staff, turning land that had served agricultural research since the campus moved to Davis in 1906 into a residential and teaching district.
