History

• The intellectual roots of the university lie in the Lunar Society of Birmingham, active between about 1765 and 1813, whose members included James Watt and Matthew Boulton, who worked together on improving the steam engine, Joseph Priestley, who discovered oxygen, and Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of the originator of evolution.

• Medical teaching in Birmingham began earlier than the institution itself. In the winter of 1767-68 John Tomlinson, the first surgeon to the Birmingham Workhouse Infirmary, gave lectures that were the first of their kind ever held in England or Wales, and in 1779 the Birmingham General Hospital opened and took over clinical teaching by medical apprentices.

• William Sands Cox began teaching at the hospital in December 1825 and pressed for a medical school, Queen Victoria granted her patronage to the Clinical Hospital and allowed it to be styled The Queen's Hospital, the first provincial teaching hospital in England, and the medical college became known as Queen's College in 1843.1825 年 12 月，William Sands Cox 开始在该医院授课并力主建立医学院；维多利亚女王向临床医院赐予赞助，允许其以「女王医院」为名，这是英格兰第一家地方教学医院，1843 年该医学院改称女王学院。

• The school passed through Birmingham School of Medicine and Surgery to Birmingham Royal School of Medicine and Surgery in 1836, and the 1843 recognition as Queen's College came with a royal charter, the origin of the Gothic Revival building that later served the university as its theological and medical base in the city centre.

• Sir Josiah Mason, a Birmingham industrialist and philanthropist who made his fortune in key rings, pens, pen nibs and electroplating, drew up the foundation deed in 1870 and founded Mason Science College in 1875, the institution that would form the nucleus of the university.

• In 1882 the departments of Chemistry, Botany and Physiology were transferred to Mason Science College, soon followed by Physics and Comparative Anatomy. The transfer of the medical school to Mason College gave the growing college considerable impetus, and in 1896 a move was made to incorporate it as a university college.1882 年，化学系、植物学系与生理学系转入梅森理学院，随后物理系与比较解剖学系也迁入。

• As a result of the Mason University College Act 1897 it was incorporated as Mason University College on 1 January 1898, with Joseph Chamberlain becoming President of its Court of Governors and Sir Oliver Lodge its principal.

• It was largely owing to Chamberlain's enthusiasm that the university was granted a royal charter by Queen Victoria on 24 March 1900. The Calthorpe family offered twenty-five acres on the Bournbrook side of their estate in July, and the Birmingham University Act 1900 put the charter into effect on 31 May, with Chamberlain as first chancellor and Lodge as first principal.

• A remnant of Josiah Mason's legacy is the mermaid that appears in the sinister chief of the university shield, while the double-headed lion occupies the dexter. The shield was redesigned in 2005, reverting a simplified version introduced in the 1980s to a detailed form based on the university's original royal charter.
