History
- The university's story begins with the federal agricultural experiment station established at Fairbanks in 1906, a research institution that set the tone for the strongly research-oriented university developed later on the same site.
- In the spring of 1915 the U.S. Congress approved legislation reserving about 2,250 acres of land for a campus around the research station and letting the federal government grant surveyed but unclaimed land in the Tanana Valley whose sale was meant to fund the college.1915 年春,美国国会立法在试验站周边保留约 2,250 英亩土地作为校园,并允许联邦把唐纳纳谷地已测量而未申领的土地拨给学院,以卖地所得资助其运营。
- Because most of the Tanana Valley stayed unsurveyed for years, the college in the end received only 12,000 acres of the land its 1915 authorising act had envisaged, an early shortfall that constrained its finances.
- In 1929 Congress attempted to remedy the shortfall by granting the college a further 100,000 acres anywhere in Alaska, but those rights were extinguished in 1959 when Alaska became a state.1929 年国会试图补救,另拨 10 万英亩可任意选定的阿拉斯加土地,但这些权利在 1959 年阿拉斯加建州时被终止。
- Four months after the 1915 land act, a cornerstone for the college was laid by Territorial Delegate James Wickersham on a bluff overlooking the lower Chena River valley, the ceremony that fixed the institution on that ridge.1915 年土地法案通过四个月后,领地代表詹姆斯·威克沙姆在俯瞰下基纳河谷的台地上为学院放置奠基石,使该校就此定于这道山脊之上。
- The ridge on which the campus stands was called Troth Yeddha' by the indigenous Athabaskan people and soon became known as College Hill, a name still carried by the Troth Yeddha' campus today.
- Charles E. Bunnell was appointed the institution's chief executive and served for 28 years, the record listing him as first president of the University of Alaska from 1921 to 1949.
- Classes began on 18 September 1922 with sixteen different courses offered to a student body of six, a ratio of one faculty member for every student on opening day.1922 年 9 月 18 日开学,首日开出 16 门课程,学生仅 6 人,师生比恰为一名教员对一名学生。
- In 1923 the first commencement graduated a single student, John Sexton Shanly, and in 1935 the Alaska Legislature passed a bill officially renaming the college the University of Alaska.1923 年首届毕业礼只有一名学生获学位,即 John Sexton Shanly;1935 年阿拉斯加立法机构通过法案,正式将学院更名为阿拉斯加大学。
- The Geophysical Institute was established in 1946 by an act of Congress, giving the young university a federally mandated research vehicle in seismology, volcanology and aeronomy well before its enrolments grew.
- The Alaska Constitutional Convention met in the freshly constructed Student Union Building on the Fairbanks campus from November 1955 to February 1956, and while it sat the building became known as Constitution Hall.
- Inside Constitution Hall the 55 delegates drafted the legal foundation of what became the 49th state, and the campus's old library and gymnasium was renamed Signers' Hall after the Alaska Constitution was signed there in February 1956.55 名代表在宪法厅起草了后来的第 49 个州的法律基础,校园旧图书馆兼体育馆因 1956 年 2 月《阿拉斯加宪法》在其间签署而更名为签署者厅。
- When William R. Wood became president in 1960 he divided the academic departments into six select colleges, and from that point both the student population and the research mission grew tremendously.
- The six colleges then created were Arts and Letters, Behavioral Sciences and Education, Biological Sciences and Renewable Resources, Business, Economics and Government, Earth Sciences and Mineral Industry, and Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Engineering.
- With the appointment of Chancellor Howard A. Cutler in 1975 the Fairbanks-based programs of the University of Alaska became the University of Alaska Fairbanks, the name it bears in this entry.1975 年霍华德·卡特勒获任教务长,阿拉斯加大学设于费尔班克斯的各项目自此独立为阿拉斯加大学费尔班克斯分校,即本条目所用校名。
