Translational Psychiatry
Translational Psychiatry (commonly abbreviated as Transl. Psychiatry) is a translational psychiatry title in the Nature Portfolio of Springer Nature, launched in April 2011. Fully open access and carrying only the electronic serial number 2158-3188, it exists to drive biological discovery about psychiatric disorders into clinical application and is among the most widely read open access journals in its field.《转化精神病学》(Translational Psychiatry,常用缩写为 Transl.
Scope
The journal's editorial stance is translation as the measure of fit, requiring that papers examine psychiatric disorders directly and carry biological discovery toward diagnosis, prevention and treatment rather than offer general molecular observation alone. The editorial office sets separate length ceilings for research articles, reviews and systematic reviews, perspectives and correspondence, and draws on fields positioned along the translation chain.
- Biomarker development: genetic, imaging, biochemical and electrophysiological markers of psychiatric disorders, and their translation into diagnostic aid and treatment stratification.
- Preclinical models: animal and cellular models with clear clinical implications, used to test disease mechanisms and candidate interventions.
- Experimental medicine and mechanistic human studies: pharmacological, physiological and psychological studies in humans, including the dissection of mechanisms behind stimulation and behavioural interventions.
- Observational studies and clinical trials: cohort, case-control and interventional studies connecting biology to improved diagnosis, prevention and treatment.
- Supporting disciplines: genetics, pharmacology, epidemiology and neuroimaging, admitted where they bear explicit translational potential for psychiatric disorders.
The journal enforces hard limits on article type and length. Research articles carry abstracts of 150 to 250 words, bodies of up to 5,000 words, at most six figures or tables and no more than 100 references. Reviews and systematic reviews run to 6,000 words and 250 references, with systematic reviews requiring a PRISMA 2020 checklist and flow diagram, while perspectives are capped at 4,000 words and correspondence at 1,000. Manuscripts are submitted through the publisher's own manuscript tracking system, and there is no pre-submission enquiry stage.
History
- Founding (2011): the journal published its first volume in April 2011 and has been electronic-only since launch, with no print edition. The serial number authority records the place of first publication as New York in the United States, while the present publisher is registered in London. [1]
- Rationale for founding: the journal arose from a long-standing break in the translational pipeline of psychiatry, a widening gap between the explosion of neuroscience and the therapeutic toolkit. The official account uses the example of Axelrod's 1961 discovery of monoamine reuptake, which still underpins antidepressants, to show how far that gap remains from closing. [2]
- Publisher history: the journal was launched under the Nature Publishing Group name, and after that group's merger with Springer the official entity is now Springer Nature, with the title sitting in the Nature Portfolio. The former corporate name recorded in the library is discontinued. [3]
- Publication model: the journal publishes continuously, with articles appearing on acceptance and numbered consecutively within the volume. One volume still carries a year, the 2026 volume being the sixteenth, but discrete issue numbers are no longer assigned, which is why the serial number authority records the frequency as indeterminable. [1]
- Open access arrangements: the journal is fully open access, listed in the directory of open access journals, and defaults to the CC BY 4.0 licence. The publisher's current article processing charge is GBP 3,290, USD 4,990 or EUR 3,690 for original research, and GBP 950, USD 1,465 or EUR 1,185 for correspondence and commentary, with waivers available to corresponding authors in low-income countries. [4]
- Metric trend: the impact factor rose from 4.691 in 2017 to 7.5 in 2025, with a five-year figure of 7.8, SNIP 1.811 and SJR 2.425. In the 2025 Chinese Academy of Sciences ranking it sits in the medical class 2 zone overall and in psychiatry at zone 2. [2]
- Review timeline: the publisher's official medians are 12 days from submission to first editorial decision and 261 days from submission to acceptance. The former includes editorial desk review and is pulled down heavily by manuscripts rejected without external review, so it should not be read as a measure of external review time. No acceptance rate is published. [2]
- Reach: its papers were downloaded more than 12.5 million times in 2025 and were mentioned over 6,300 times in Altmetric tracking, among the largest readership footprints of comparable open access psychiatry journals. [2]
Editors
The journal has had a single editor-in-chief since launch, which is unusual among Nature Portfolio titles. The editorial office comprises a managing editor and a number of associate editors, organised around the editor-in-chief's own academic orientation. Since that editor also founded three Nature titles, the editorial policy here stays closely aligned with its molecular-level sister journals.
- Julio Licinio (founding editor-in-chief since 2011): distinguished professor at SUNY Upstate Medical University, trained in psychiatry, medicine, neuroscience and physiology. He is founding editor-in-chief of Molecular Psychiatry, Translational Psychiatry and The Pharmacogenomics Journal, and works on translational research in depression and obesity. [5]
- Managing editor: Daniel Roche of the University of Maryland School of Medicine serves as managing editor, overseeing the day-to-day handling of manuscripts. [5]
- Associate editor: Agorastos Agorastos serves as associate editor and is an associate professor of psychiatry at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece, working on post-traumatic stress disorder, the autonomic nervous system, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and circadian rhythms. [5]
- Indexing: the journal is indexed in MEDLINE and PubMed, PubMed Central, Scopus, Web of Science, the directory of open access journals, the British Library and Crossref, a coverage consistent with its open access positioning. [2]
- Standing in the field: the journal is regarded as one of the flagship titles in translational psychiatry, its editorial principle of carrying biological discovery through to clinical application having been widely adopted by comparable journals, and it serves as a principal outlet through which biological psychiatry reaches practice. [2]
