Neurodegener.) [1]
Scope
- Scope: the journal is an open access, peer-reviewed title covering research, therapeutics and education across all aspects of neurodegenerative diseases. It creates a novel interface between the fields of basic, translational and clinical research.
- Subject coverage: it covers Parkinson's disease and movement disorders, Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, and motor neuron disease together with other neurodegenerative diseases. Specific interests include epidemiology and pathogenesis, diagnosis and prevention, research into disease pathogenesis, the development of new drugs and cell therapy, drug delivery, and rehabilitation.
- Distinctive position: organised around translation, the journal gives scientists, clinicians and physician-scientists a venue for their research and clinical trials that is applicable to their own specific field. It was the first English-language open access journal devoted to translational medicine in neurodegenerative diseases, in China and internationally.
- Article types and open access: all articles are published on a fully open access basis, so readers pay nothing and no subscription barrier stands before the author. The journal carries original research and review articles.
- Indexing and metrics: the journal is indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded, Medline, Scopus, DOAJ and PubMed Central, among others. It holds the first quartile in the JCR Neurosciences category and sits in the first division of the Chinese Academy of Sciences scheme for both medicine and neuroscience. The 2025 impact factor is 19.1, the five-year impact factor is 19.7, and the median time from submission to first decision is 11 days. [2]
History
- Founded in 2012: the journal was launched in January 2012. Its first issue opened with a platform introduction by Shengdi Chen and Jialin C. Zheng.2012
- Background to the founding: research on neurodegenerative diseases had long lacked a dedicated meeting point between bench and bedside, and the journal was created to fill precisely that gap.
- Founding editor: Professor Shengdi Chen founded the journal and served as its first editor-in-chief. He was then head of the Department of Neurology at Ruijin Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.
- Publisher and partnership: the journal is sponsored by Ruijin Hospital and co-published with BioMed Central. The copyright line records joint ownership by Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and BioMed Central Ltd., the last of these being part of Springer Nature.
- Milestones in indexing: the journal was accepted into the Science Citation Index Expanded in December 2017 and received its first impact factor in 2018. In the same year it obtained the Chinese national serial number CN 31-2159/R74, after which its international indexing coverage widened steadily.
- Recent metrics: the impact factor rose from about 5.5 in 2018 to above 10 in 2022, stood at 10.8 in 2023, and reached 19.1 in 2025. [3]
