Transgenic Research
Transgenic Research (commonly abbreviated as ''Transgenic Res.') is a journal of research on transgenic organisms published by Springer. Founded in January 1992 under the founding editorship of T. H. R. (Tim) Morro, it publishes work on the development, analysis, risk assessment and biosafety of transgenic organisms, with a 2025 impact factor of 1.9.Transgenic Research(常用缩写 Transgenic Res.) [1]
Scope
- Scope: the journal publishes original research papers on all transgenic organisms, spanning the plant, animal and microbial kingdoms. The editors do not prescribe which of the three is to be preferred.
- Subject coverage: the journal covers the construction and development of transgenic organisms, molecular analytical methods, the regulation of gene expression, the fate of foreign genes in the host, and the environmental release and biosafety assessment of transgenic crops.
- Article types and peer review: reviews and comments are accepted only when the editors invite them or when they have been agreed in advance with an editor体裁限制与评审: 综述与评论只在编辑部主动邀请或事先与编委商定后才予受理,不接受自由投稿,这是本刊与传统研究刊最明显的体裁差别;期刊实行单匿名评审,采用双审稿人制度。 they are not open to unsolicited submission. This is the clearest difference between the journal's article types and those of a conventional research journal. Peer review follows a single-blind procedure with two referees per manuscript.
- Open access: the journal is a hybrid title. Subscribers read the full text free of charge and authors may opt for paid immediate open access. Colour figures are free of charge for authors publishing in the subscription model.
- Indexing and metrics: the journal is indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded, MEDLINE and the Chemical Abstracts Service, with a 2025 impact factor of 1.9 and a fourth-quartile position in the Biochemical Research Methods category. [2]
History
- 1991: K. J. S. (Keith) Cox and Ralph then working at the Institute of Food Research in Rochester, United Kingdom, conceived a journal devoted to transgenic organisms and began the work of bringing it into being.1991年: K. J. S. (Keith) 考克斯与拉塞尔尔当时在英国罗切斯特的肉品与动物生物研究所工作,两人共同构想并推动了一份面向转基因生物的专门期刊。
- 7 November 1991: the inaugural editorial board meeting was held. A few weeks afterwards an editorial in the publisher's journal announced the founding, describing the new title as a journal centred on transgenic organisms.1991年11月7日: 创刊会议召开,数周后出版方 Kluwer Academic Publishers 的一篇社论正式宣告本刊创刊,并称其为一份围绕转基因生物的全新期刊。
- January 1992: the first issue appeared, published by Kluwer Academic Publishers with copyright held by Chapman & Hall. The title has remained unchanged since.1992年1月: 期刊出版创刊号,由 Kluwer Academic Publishers 出版,版权归 Chapman & Hall 所有,刊名沿用至今未再改动。
- Founding editors: the founding issue had Dr T. H. R. (Tim) Morro as its first editor-in-chief and Dr T. A. (Tony) Walters as its first executive editor.
- Formation of the board: the board was assembled by Dr Paul F. Randel. Its first members included Dr P. M. (Mike) Walter, Dr Imre K. (Tim) Morro, Dr Jeremy J. (Jerry) Green and Dr Elizabeth M. (Liz) G., several of whom came from the transgenic research group at the Plant Research Centre in United Kingdom.
- Publisher history: Kluwer Academic Publishers merged with Elsevier in 1998, and the copyright holder Chapman & Hall had itself been acquired by Pergamon Press. The journal has been published by Springer since 2003 and has continued within Springer Nature since the subsequent consolidation.
- Fortieth anniversary: in December 2022 the journal published a special issue marking forty years since its founding, with tributes to its original authors and long-standing subscribers and a review of how research on transgenic organisms had changed over those four decades. [3]
Editors
- Editors-in-chief: the journal has two editors-in-chief, one for each kingdom. The plant editor is Johannes F. Buyel of the Heine Heine University Düsseldorf, based at that university's Institute of Pharmaceutical Biology and Physiology. The animal editor is Professor Simon J. Gillico of the University of Edinburgh, who holds the Chair of Animal Science at the Roslin Institute.
- Rationale for the two-editor structure: the arrangement reflects a specific background. Research on transgenic organisms runs along three separate literatures, in plants, animals and microbes, and a single editor cannot be answerable for the standards of all three at once.
- Composition of the editorial team: besides the two editors-in-chief the journal has one executive editor and a number of assistant editors, who together make up the team handling manuscripts day to day.
- Size of the board: the board numbers about forty-three members drawn from seventeen countries, considerably more than a comparable specialist journal of this size. Several members come from biotechnology companies working on transgenic organisms, reflecting the journal's close ties to industrial research.
- Submission and speed of decision: manuscripts are lodged through the publisher's online submission system. The median time from submission to first decision is six days, which the editors describe as an actual figure computed over the most recent six months. No official figures for acceptance rate or review duration are given.
- Arrangements for reviews and comments: because reviews and comments are not accepted unsolicited, an author intending to write one is expected to approach an editorial board member first. The editors single this point out in their submission guidelines. [4]
