Tongji University is a comprehensive national public university in Shanghai, China, directly administered by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and known especially for civil engineering, architecture and transportation同济大学是位于中国上海的综合性全国重点大学，由中华人民共和国教育部直属，以土木工程、建筑与交通运输最为人熟知

Founded in 1907 by German physicians in Shanghai as a German medical school, it became a national university in 1927, survived the war years in exile in Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Yunnan and Sichuan, and today combines ten fields of study with twenty-nine colleges and seven affiliated hospitals同济大学1907年由在上海的德国医生创办，前身是一所德文医学堂，1927年成为国立大学，抗战期间先后西迁浙江、江西、云南与四川，如今拥有十个学科门类、二十九个学院与七家附属医院

History

• The predecessor of the university was the German Medical School for the Chinese, created in Shanghai in 1907 with a board of eighteen members and headed by the German naval doctor Erich Paulun as its first principal学校的前身是1907年在上海创办的德文医学堂，校董会由十八人组成，首任总理兼总监督为德国海军医生埃里希·宝隆
• The German doctor arrived in Shanghai in 1891, opened a clinic in 1893 and founded the Tongji Hospital in about 1900, and he then proposed a medical school attached to that hospital to train Chinese practitioners这位德国医生1891年来到上海，1893年开设诊所，约1900年创办同济医院，并进而提出在院内设立医学堂以培养中国医生

• In 1912 the medical school merged with the newly founded German engineering school and became the Tongji German School of Medicine and Engineering, with medicine, engineering and German as its three departments1912年，德文医学堂与新办的德文工学堂合并为同济德文医工学堂，设医、工、德文三科，其中德文科为预科

• On 17 March 1917, after China broke relations with Germany, the French concession authorities declared the school dissolved and ordered teachers and students to leave the same day, so the Ministry of Education moved it to the Chinese Public School at Wusong1917年3月14日中国与德国断交，次日上海法租界以同济德文医工学堂属德国产业为由宣布解散学校并限令师生当日离校，教育部随后将学校迁至吴淞中国公学

• On 20 May 1924 the Ministry of Education approved the medical faculty as a university faculty, and that date has been celebrated as the anniversary of the university ever since1924年5月20日，教育部批准同济医科为大学，从此这一天被确定为学校校庆日
• In August 1927 the Nationalist government took the school over and named it the National Tongji University, the earliest of the national universities founded in China, and it gained a third college of science in 19371927年8月南京国民政府教育部接管学校，命名为国立同济大学，这是中国最早设立的几所国立大学之一，1937年学校又增设理学院

• In 1945 the university created a faculty of law, which opened in December and was placed in a pavilion of the same temple, on the argument that China lacked a school of German law1945年同济设立法学院，同年12月正式开课并设在东岳庙内的玉皇楼，其缘由是当时中国缺少专门介绍德国法学的学校
• In 1946 the university moved back to Shanghai and taught in scattered buildings across the city, the engineering college settling at 1239 Siping Road, which became the main campus after 19491946年同济分批迁回上海，因校舍短缺而分散在市区多处教学，工学院设在其美路的原日本中学校址，即今天四平路1239号的校本部
• The college of science was expanded into a college of letters and science in August 1946 and split again into two colleges in June 1948, while in 1949 the city military control commission took the university over1946年8月理学院扩充为文理学院，1948年6月文理学院再分为文学院与理学院，1949年6月25日同济大学由上海市军事管制委员会接管
