Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology

Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, written 東京農工大学 in Japanese and shortened to 农工大 or to the Latin acronym TUAT, is a small national university in the western-Tokyo cities of Fuchu and Koganei that teaches agriculture and engineering through just two faculties, yet despite an enrolment of only some 5,800 students it carries a heavyweight reputation in the life sciences and applied biotechnology.

Its agricultural predecessor opened in 1874 and the institution was reorganised into a national university in 1949, and in 2004 it completed its transition into a National University Corporation under Japan's reformed national-university system, a legal change applied across the state universities that year.

Small though it is, with some 300 academic staff in 2021 and only eleven undergraduate majors, the university is counted among the largest earners of patent royalty income among Japanese universities, and it claims Akira Endo, the biochemist whose fungal research produced the statin drugs, as the most celebrated figure on its staff.
