The University of Hong Kong

The University of Hong Kong, usually called HKU, is the first publicly funded research university in Hong Kong and is based in Pokfulam on Hong Kong Island.香港大学（The University of Hong Kong），简称港大，是香港第一所公帑资助的研究型大学，大学本部位于香港岛薄扶林。

Founded in 1911 out of an existing medical college and a technical institute, it teaches chiefly in English, holds a motto from the Confucian classics, and ranks eleventh in the 2027 QS World University Rankings.学校于 1911 年由一所已有的医学院与一所工学院合并创办，主要以英语授课，校训取自儒家经典，在 2027 年 QS 世界大学排名中位列全球第十一。

History

• HKU traces its origin to the College of Medicine for Chinese, established in Victoria City in 1887 and later absorbed into the university as its medical faculty.港大源自 1887 年在维多利亚城创办的华人西医书院，该书院后来并入大学，成为其医学院。

• In 1908 the governor Frederick Lugard publicly proposed a university for Hong Kong, modelled on the universities of Birmingham and Leeds and focused on applied science.1908 年，港督卢吉公开提出在香港创办一所大学，以伯明翰大学与利兹大学为蓝本，偏重应用科学。

• Fundraising drew on both Chinese and non-Chinese donors, with the Indian merchant Hormusjee Naorojee Mody giving a large sum and business houses such as Swire and Jardine contributing.募款同时依靠华人与非华人捐助者，印度籍商人么地捐出巨款，太古、怡和等洋行也踊跃出资。

• Provincial authorities in Guangdong supported the plan on the ground that a Hong Kong university would help Chinese students acquire Western learning, and about half the funds came from outside Hong Kong.广东方面认为香港的大学有助于中国学生获取西方知识，遂予支持，募得款项中约有一半来自香港以外地区。

• The foundation stone of the Main Building was laid on 16 March 1910, the university was formally established on 30 March 1911 by ordinance, and the Main Building opened on 11 March 1912.本部大楼于 1910 年 3 月 16 日奠基，大学于 1911 年 3 月 30 日依条例正式成立，本部大楼则于 1912 年 3 月 11 日启用。

• Teaching began with three faculties, medicine, engineering and arts, and an initial intake of 72 students, all of them male boarders.开办之初设医学、工程与文学三所学院，首届学生 72 人，全部为男性寄宿生。

• The first degrees were conferred in December 1916, and a Chinese department was added in 1927 with donations from Chinese merchants.首届学位于 1916 年 12 月颁授；1927 年又在中商资助下增设中文学院。

• Hong Kong fell to Japanese forces in December 1941 and the university was effectively closed until 1948, suffering damage to its buildings and the loss of equipment and records.1941 年 12 月香港沦陷，大学几乎停办直至 1948 年，其间校舍受损，设备与文卷散失。

Academics

• HKU is a comprehensive university with ten faculties, covering architecture, arts, business and economics, dentistry, education, engineering, law, medicine, science and social sciences.港大是一所综合型大学，设有十所学院，涵盖建筑、文学、经济及工商管理、牙医、教育、工程、法律、医学、理学与社会科学。

Campus

• The Main Building at the junction of Bonham Road and Pokfulam Road houses the university's central offices and teaching rooms and is a declared monument.位于般咸道与薄扶林道交界处的本部大楼设有学校的中枢办公与教学空间，是法定古迹。
