The Lichenologist
The Lichenologist (ISO 4 abbreviation Lichenologist, ISSN 0024-2829) is a historic scientific journal in lichenology published by Cambridge University Press on behalf of the British Lichen Society. Founded in 1958, it appears bimonthly and has long been the only scientific journal in the world devoted entirely to lichen research.
Scope
The journal publishes original research on lichens from all parts of the world rather than restricting contributions to British species. Its scope covers taxonomy and systematics, phylogenetics, biogeography, community and population ecology, and lichen physiology and anatomy. Submissions take the form of a Monograph, a Review or Perspective, a Standard Paper for research, or a Short Communication. The journal also publishes book reviews and special issues devoted to emerging areas of research. [1]
- Taxonomy and systematics: taxonomic revisions of critical groups, and phylogenetic research on lichens and lichenicolous fungi. Taxonomic revisions published here are key reference material for nomenclatural work.
- Ecology and biogeography: community and population ecology of lichens, their distribution patterns and environmental responses, including sensitivity of lichens to climate and environmental change.
- Physiology and anatomy: physiological mechanisms of the lichen symbiosis, interactions between the photobiont and mycobiont, and structural anatomy of lichen thalli.
- A range of article types: Monographs, Reviews and Perspectives, Standard Papers and Short Communications coexist, accommodating both monographic systematic work and short reports needing rapid publication.
History
- Founded alongside its Society (1958): the first issue appeared in November 1958, following the establishment of the British Lichen Society on 1 February 1958 at the British Museum (Natural History) in London, where 24 people meeting at the invitation of T. D. V. Swinscow voted unanimously to form it. The decision to publish a periodical, to be called The Lichenologist, was taken at that same founding meeting. Peter Wilfred James served as the founding editor.
- Aims of the founding era: the first editorial set out the journal's two primary objectives, the enhancement of lichenological study and '''the importance of nature conservation''. Faced with a scarcity of contemporary British lichen taxonomic literature, the journal published detailed articles to help botanists identify local species, and sought contributions on the distribution and ecology of lichens in Britain, then under-explored. The editorial emphasised the delicate balance between research and the ecological impact of specimen collection, advocating careful, responsible study so as not to harm these slow-growing organisms.
- Expansion (1970s to 1990s): an editorial published twenty years after foundation noted that the journal remained the only scientific journal in the world devoted entirely to lichen research. In 1979 it expanded to three issues of about 100 pages each, and in 1995 to six issues a year. It was indexed in 1997 and received its first impact factor in 1999. Early volumes were produced by cyclostyle, with the first two volumes typed by Swinscow's secretary.
- Editorial and house-style reform (from 2001): Peter Crittenden served as Senior Editor for two decades from 2000 to 2019, during which close to half the journal's output appeared. In 2001 he led a comprehensive overhaul of layout and printing, introducing a larger page size and an entirely new cover design in place of the long-standing mint-green one. He introduced thematic issues on specific topics, and encouraged longer, more comprehensive papers, with a marked increase in average paper length. In response to evolving nomenclatural requirements, obligatory registration of new fungal names was introduced.
- A tightening of policy (2016): in 2016 Crittenden implemented the journal's most consequential policy change, rejecting "single naked species descriptions" and asking authors instead to contextualise new species within broader taxonomic or ecological frameworks. The decision raised some concerns at first but did not reduce the number of new species described, and increased the impact and usefulness of those contributions.
- Editorial transition (2020 to present): after Crittenden stood down in 2020, the journal has been co-edited by Christopher J. Ellis and Leena Myllys. Electronic publication was also completed during this period, following the cover redesign of the 2001 overhaul that ended the mint-green design used from 1959.
- Disciplinary standing: of the more than 51,000 lichen papers recorded in the Recent Literature on Lichens database up to 2019, over 2,400, or about 4.7%, appeared here — nearly half of them during Crittenden's tenure. In the 2024 Journal Citation Reports the journal ranked 29th of 32 titles in the Mycology category.
