The Education University of Hong Kong

The Education University of Hong Kong, commonly abbreviated EdUHK and known in Chinese as 香港教育大學, is one of the eight publicly funded universities of Hong Kong and the only one historically dedicated to teacher education.香港教育大學（通常簡稱教大）是香港八所教資會資助大學之一，也是其中唯一一所以師範教育為歷史本位的大學。

Its origins reach back to 1853, when the first formalised in-service teacher training course in Hong Kong was run at St Paul's College, and the present institution was established on 25 April 1994 as the Hong Kong Institute of Education.其渊源可追溯至 1853 年圣保罗书院开办的香港首个正规在职教师培训课程；1994 年 4 月 25 日，现机构以香港教育学院之名成立。

History

• The history of the institution can be traced to 1853, when under the Education Committee chaired by Bishop George Smith the first formalised in-service teacher training course was offered at St Paul's College, opening a new chapter in Hong Kong education.该校历史可追溯至 1853 年，当年在主教的施美夫主持的教育委员会之下，圣保罗书院开办了首个正规在职教师培训课程，为香港教育开创新局。

• As demand for teachers grew, Hong Kong created a series of training institutions, among them the Government Normal School, the Hong Kong Technical College, government Chinese normal schools for men and for women and the Taipo Government Chinese Normal School.随着教师需求增长，香港先后设立一系列培训机构，其中包括官立师范学堂、香港实业专科学院、官立男子汉文师范学堂、官立女子汉文师范学堂以及大埔官立汉文师范学校。

• Further predecessors were the Rural Normal College, the Hong Kong Teachers' College, the Government Rural Normal School, the Northcote College of Education, the Grantham College of Education and the Sir Robert Black College of Education.其他前身机构还包括乡村师范专科学院、香港师资学院、官立乡村师范学校，以及罗富国师范学院、葛量洪师范学院与柏立基师范学院。

• The list of predecessors is completed by the Hong Kong Technical Teachers' College, founded in 1974, and the Institute of Language in Education, founded in 1982.前身机构的名单还包括 1974 年成立的香港工商师范学院与 1982 年成立的语文教育学院。

• In June 1992 the Education Commission recommended in its Fifth Report that all the teacher training colleges be merged so that resources could be allocated more efficiently.1992 年 6 月，教育统筹委员会在第五号报告中建议合并当时所有师训学院，以便更有效地分配资源。

• The following year the government granted the site on Lo Fai Road at Tai Po, originally reserved for Lingnan University, for the permanent campus of the Hong Kong Institute of Education, and Lingnan moved instead to Tuen Mun.次年，政府把原划给岭南大学的大埔露辉路山地批作香港教育学院的永久校舍用地，岭南大学改为迁往屯门。

• On 14 February 1993 a temporary council was formed and set up offices on the 38th floor of Two Exchange Square to prepare the new institution.1993 年 2 月 14 日成立临时校董会，并在交易广场二座 38 楼设立办公室，筹备新学院。

• In March 1994 the government enacted the Hong Kong Institute of Education Ordinance, which took effect on 25 April 1994, establishing the institute with its head office in the Sunning Building in Causeway Bay and ten branch campuses.1994 年 3 月，政府颁布《香港教育学院条例》，并于同年 4 月 25 日生效，正式成立香港教育学院，总办事处设于铜锣湾新宁大厦，另设十间分校。

• On 1 September 1994 the Education Department transferred all the teacher training colleges to the new institute and ceased to run any post-secondary institution itself.1994 年 9 月 1 日，教育署把所有教育学院移交新学院，自此不再兼营任何专上院校。

• On 1 September 1995 the powers of the directors of the five former colleges were centralised in the institute, ending a one-year transitional federal college structure.1995 年 9 月 1 日，前五所教育学院的院长权力一并收归学院，结束为期一年的书院联邦制过渡安排。

• In 1996 the institute joined the University Grants Committee as a funded institution, and in October 1997 it moved into the new campus at Tai Po in the space of three weeks.1996 年，学院加入大学教育资助委员会成为资助院校；1997 年 10 月，学院用三周时间迁入大埔新校园。

• In January 2016 the Executive Council approved the university title, the amending ordinance was gazetted on 19 February, and on 27 May 2016 it took effect, making the institution the eighth University Grants Committee-funded university and the tenth university in Hong Kong.2016 年 1 月，行政长官会同行政会议批准大学名衔；2 月 19 日修订条例草案刊宪；2016 年 5 月 27 日条例生效，该机构成为第八所教资会资助大学及香港第十所大学。

Academics

• The university has three faculties, namely the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Education and Human Development and the Faculty of Humanities, together with two academies and one graduate school.该校设有三个学院，即博文及社会科学学院、教育及人类发展学院与人文学院，另设两个书院与一个研究生院。

Campus

• The main campus is at 10 Lo Ping Road in Tai Po and covers 12.5 hectares, with the master plan designed by P&T Group and construction carried out by Shui On for blocks A to D, Aoki for block E and another contractor for the hostels.主校园位于大埔露屏路 10 号，占地 12.5 公顷；总平面由巴马丹拿设计，A 至 D 座由瑞安建业承建、E 座由日本青木建设承建，宿舍由另一家承建商建造。

• The foundation stone was laid on 28 May 1996 by the Governor, Chris Patten, and the campus was opened on 26 February 1998 by the Chief Executive, Tung Chee-hwa.1996 年 5 月 28 日，港督彭定康主持奠基；1998 年 2 月 26 日，行政长官董建华主持校园揭幕启用。

• Block A, the Cho Kwai-chee Foundation Building, is the administrative centre and houses the reception, security centre, administrative departments, student activity venues and the health centre.A 座曹贵子基金会大楼是校园行政中心，设有接待处、保安中心、多个行政部门、学生活动场地与保健中心。

• Block C, the central building, connects with the wings of the teaching buildings and contains the ground level entrance of the Mong Man Wai Library, a canteen, a Bank of East Asia branch and the students' union room around a central plaza.C 座中央大楼与两翼教学大楼直线相接，地表层设有蒙民伟图书馆入口，平台层有饭堂、东亚银行分行与学生会室，环绕出中央广场。

• Blocks B and D form the teaching buildings, containing lecture theatres, classrooms, laboratories, professional production studios, resource centres and computer rooms, together with the offices of departments and research centres.B 座与 D 座组成教学大楼，内设演讲厅、课室、实验室、专业制作室、资源中心与电脑室，并设各学系及研究中心办公室。

• Block E, the amenity and sports building, provides an indoor sports ground named after Cheung Hoi-yuen, a swimming pool, squash rooms, a fitness room and a gymnasium, with outdoor football, basketball and tennis courts.E 座文康运动综合大楼设有以张海源命名的室内运动场、游泳池、壁球室、健身室与体操房，室外则有足球场、篮球场与网球场。

• A new teaching building equipped for STEM and artificial intelligence education, with a 400-seat multi-purpose lecture theatre, ten classrooms and two virtual classrooms, was planned for completion in the 2025/26 academic year.一座以 STEM 与人工智能教育为特色的新教学大楼，配备可容纳 400 人的多功能大演讲厅、十间课室与两个虚拟课室，预计于 2025 至 2026 年度落成。

• Student and staff hostels comprise three traditional halls named after the Northcote, Grantham and Robert Black colleges, each eleven storeys high, together with the Jockey Club Student Quarters.学生及教职员宿舍由三座传统宿舍与赛马会学生宿舍组成，三座传统宿舍分别继承罗富国、葛量洪与柏立基三所学院之名，楼高十一层。

Student life

• More than 9,000 students are enrolled, and the graduation ceremonies and major ceremonies are held on the Tai Po campus in the presence of the Chancellor.该校在读学生逾 9,000 名，毕业典礼及主要典礼均在大埔校园举行，并由校监主持。

• Under the convention that the Chief Executive of Hong Kong is the Chancellor, the university's titular head is the head of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.按照行政长官兼任校监的惯例，该校的名义首长为香港特别行政区行政长官。

• The Council is the governing core of the institution, and its student seat used to be filled by the president of the students' union.校董会是该校的管治核心，其学生席位过去由学生会会长出任。

• From 20 January 2022 the university ceased to recognise the students' union, and from 26 May 2022 the student seat on the Council was filled by direct appointment of the university.自 2022 年 1 月 20 日起，校方不再承认学生会；自 2022 年 5 月 26 日起，校董会的学生席位改由校方直接委任。

Notable people

• George Smith, as chairman of the Education Committee, presided over the first formalised in-service teacher training course at St Paul's College in 1853, from which the institution traces its origin.施美夫以教育委员会主席的身份，于 1853 年主持圣保罗书院首个正规在职教师培训课程，该校即以此为渊源。
