The Chinese University of Hong Kong

The Chinese University of Hong Kong, known as CUHK, is a public research university in Sha Tin, Hong Kong, and the only university in the territory that follows a collegiate system.香港中文大学（The Chinese University of Hong Kong），简称中大，是一所位于香港沙田的公立研究型大学，也是香港唯一采用书院制办学的大学。

Founded in 1963 by the union of three colleges, it takes its motto from the Confucian classic and ranks eighteenth in the 2027 QS World University Rankings.学校于 1963 年由三所书院合并成立，校训取自儒家经典，在 2027 年 QS 世界大学排名中位列全球第十八。

History

• CUHK was established on 17 October 1963 under the Chinese University of Hong Kong Ordinance, formed by the merger of Chung Chi College, New Asia College and United College.中大依《香港中文大学条例》于 1963 年 10 月 17 日成立，由崇基学院、新亚书院与联合书院合并而成。

• Its constituent colleges traced their roots to universities and colleges on the mainland, whose scholars moved to Hong Kong after 1949.其组成书院渊源于中国大陆的多所大学与书院，这些院校的学者在 1949 年后南来香港。

• Chung Chi College was founded in 1951 by church bodies, drawing together resources associated with thirteen Christian universities formerly on the mainland.崇基学院于 1951 年由教会团体创办，整合了大陆十三所基督教大学的相关资源。

• New Asia College was founded in 1949 by the scholar Qian Mu and others, and became a centre of contemporary Confucian thought.新亚书院由学者钱穆等人于 1949 年创办，后成为当代新儒家思想的重镇。

• United College, established in 1956, grew out of private colleges that had moved south from Guangzhou and Shanghai and offered courses in the social sciences and business.联合书院成立于 1956 年，由自广州、上海南迁的私立大学发展而来，开设社会科学与商科课程。

• The university's medical faculty founded a teaching hospital at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin, and the institution's name reflects its original mission of combining Chinese and Western learning.学校医学院在沙田威尔士亲王医院设有教学医院；校名中的「中文」二字反映了其结合中西学术的初衷。

Academics

• CUHK is organised into nine member colleges and eight academic faculties, covering arts, science, social science, business administration, medicine, education, engineering and law.中大设有九所成员书院与八所学术学院，涵盖文学、理学、社会科学、工商管理、医学、教育、工程与法律。

• The collegiate system means students belong both to a college, which provides pastoral care and residential life, and to a faculty, which provides their academic programme.书院制意味着学生同时隶属于提供生活辅导与住宿的书院，以及开设学位课程的学院。

Campus

• The main campus covers about 137 hectares on a hillside in Sha Tin in the New Territories, overlooking Tolo Harbour.主校区位于新界沙田山坡之上，占地约 137 公顷，可俯瞰吐露港。

• The campus is laid out on a slope, and buildings are connected by a network of paths and a free shuttle bus service.校园依山而建，各建筑由步道网络与免费穿梭巴士相连。

Notable people

• Qian Mu, the historian and Confucian scholar, founded New Asia College and was its first president, and he helped shape CUHK's cultural mission.史学家、儒学学者钱穆创办新亚书院并任首任院长，也塑造了中大的文化使命。
