Systematic Entomology
Systematic Entomology is the journal of the Royal Entomological Society of London, published by Wiley on the society's behalf and issued quarterly. It carries research on the systematics, phylogenetics and integrative taxonomy of insects, arachnids and myriapods, and is among the longest-established titles in zoological taxonomy, its lineage running back to 1932.《系统昆虫学》(Systematic Entomology)是伦敦皇家昆虫学会(Royal Entomological Society of London)的机关刊,由威立出版(Wiley)代表学会出版,季刊发行。
Scope
Systematic Entomology holds that taxonomic work must carry biological significance beyond description, with purely descriptive morphology considered only when supported by molecular phylogenetic data. Its principal subject areas include:Systematic Entomology
- Insect systematics: classification, revision, phylogenetic reconstruction and integrative taxonomy of insects, forming the bulk of the journal.
- Arachnids and myriapods: systematics and phylogenetics of arachnids and myriapods, completing the arthropod taxonomic coverage alongside the insect part.
- Evolution and zoogeography: studies of broad biological, evolutionary or zoogeographical significance, including divergence-time estimation, biogeographic patterns and diversification mechanisms.
- Molecular phylogenetics: combined analysis of molecular and morphological data, criteria for taxon delimitation, and phylogenomic methods.
- Methodological innovation: new taxonomic methods, standards for museum and type-specimen research, and the application of digitisation in taxonomy.
The official scope explicitly excludes mites. Manuscript types include original papers, opinion papers, methodological articles and reviews, with the opinion category providing a standing venue for debate in taxonomy. [1]
History
- Lineage begins (1932): the journal's lineage begins with the Proceedings of the Royal Entomological Society of London, Series B: Taxonomy, founded in 1932 and published continuously to 1970. [2]
- Two renamings (1971/1975): in 1971 the title became the Journal of Entomology, Series B: Taxonomy, and in 1975 the Journal of Entomology, Series B: Taxonomy and Systematics, with volume numbering carried across the changes. [3]
- Present title adopted (1976): the present title Systematic Entomology was adopted in 1976, with volume numbering restarting at one, completing a lineage shared with the earlier titles. [4]
- Publisher transition: the journal has been a Royal Entomological Society publication from the start, printed early on by Blackwell Scientific Publications and now published by Wiley on the society's behalf. [5]
- Metric standing: the 2025 impact factor is 4.3, placing the journal in the first quartile of both entomology and evolutionary biology, with a continuing run of featured papers. [6]
Editors
The journal is run by five co-editors-in-chief, an unusually collective leadership arrangement for a taxonomy title, supported by an editorial board of seventeen scholars covering the main taxonomic groups across continents. Wiley's official 2025 metrics give a median of five days to first decision, one hundred and thirty days from submission to acceptance and thirty-six days from acceptance to publication, with an official acceptance rate of twenty-three per cent. [7]
- Bonnie B. Blaimer (Museum für Naturkunde Berlin): researcher at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, working on integrative systematics and macroevolution of hymenopteran ants, and one of the current co-editors-in-chief. [7]
- Gael Kergoat (INRAE): co-editor-in-chief since 2022, working on integrative taxonomy of beetles and Lepidoptera at the French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment. [8]
