Stem Cell Reports
Stem Cell Reports (commonly abbreviated as Stem Cell Rep.) is the official journal of the International Society for Stem Cell Research, published by Cell Press, an imprint of Elsevier. Established in 2013 and issued monthly, it has been fully open access from the outset and publishes original research in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine, serving as a principal publishing route in the field without a subscription barrier.《干细胞报告》(Stem Cell Reports,常用缩写为 Stem Cell Rep.)
Scope
The journal takes as its editorial stance an even balance between fundamental discovery in stem cell biology and clinical translation toward regenerative medicine, publishing both mechanistic work on pluripotency and reprogramming and applied studies leading to organoids, disease models and cell therapies, and requiring that papers advance understanding of stem cell behaviour rather than merely describe it.
- Pluripotency and reprogramming: induced pluripotency, somatic cell reprogramming, and the regulatory mechanisms of epigenetic and transcriptional networks.
- Adult stem cells and regeneration: self-renewal, differentiation and tissue repair in haematopoietic, neural, muscle and epithelial stem cells.
- Organoids and in vitro models: organoid construction, disease modelling, gene-editing screens and high-throughput functional genomics.
- Niche and immune regulation: the stem cell niche, the extracellular matrix, and the interplay of inflammatory responses with immune cells.
- Translation and clinical research: preclinical evaluation, cell therapy product development, and the ethical, regulatory and standards questions raised by stem cell research.
The journal also carries reviews, perspectives and policy pieces addressing the ethics, regulation and standards of stem cell research, while research articles and short reports remain its principal article types. Neither the society nor the publisher publishes an acceptance rate, and the only official timeline given is a median of 178 days from submission to acceptance, a figure that spans both editorial screening and external peer review.
History
- Founding context (2013): the journal was proposed by Haifan Lin, then president of the International Society for Stem Cell Research, took about three years to prepare, and published its first issue in June 2013 ahead of that year's annual meeting in Boston. The founding editor was Christine Mummery of Leiden University Medical Center. [1]
- First-issue submissions: the inaugural editorial disclosed that the editorial office received close to one hundred manuscripts in the less than six months following its first open call in December 2012, showing how strongly the society's backing pulled in submissions. [2]
- Open access from the outset: the society decided at the project stage to publish on a fully open access basis, with authors retaining copyright and a choice between the CC BY 4.0 and CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licences. The publisher's current article processing charge is US$4,400, reduced by 13 per cent for society members and by a further half for corresponding authors who join for the first time. [3]
- Editorial succession: the founding editor Mummery served until 2018, followed by Martin F. Pera of The Jackson Laboratory, who held the post from early 2019 through the end of 2024, and Janet Rossant of the University of Toronto, who took over from January 2025. [4]
- Publisher and serial numbers: the journal is published by Elsevier under the Cell Press imprint, the serial number authority recording the place of publication as Amsterdam in the Netherlands. It has been electronic-only since launch, carrying the single online serial number 2213-6711 and no separate print number. [5]
- Policies and milestones: the journal was among the earlier Cell Press titles to promise explicit scoop protection, under which the editors will not reject a paper for lack of novelty if a similar result is published elsewhere while it is under review or revision. By its tenth anniversary in 2023 it had published close to two thousand papers. [6]
- Metric trend: the impact factor eased from 7.765 in 2020 to 5.6 in 2025, fluctuating between 5.1 and 5.9 in the interim. In the 2025 Chinese Academy of Sciences ranking it sits in the medical class 1 zone overall, with cell and tissue engineering and cell biology both at zone 2. [7]
Editors
The journal operates under a peer review framework led by an editor-in-chief, with associate editors overseeing separate subject areas and an honorary board in support. Manuscripts are submitted through the Editorial Manager system and may enter Cell Press's multi-journal submission arrangement, under which one manuscript can be considered by several titles in the family at once. The editorial team is drawn from research centres across Europe, North America and Asia, giving it a broadly balanced international composition.
