Space Science Reviews
Space Science Reviews (commonly abbreviated as ''Space Sci. Rev.') is a review journal in the space sciences published by Springer. Founded by Kees de Jager in 1962, it aims at synthesising the various branches of space research, with a 2025 impact factor of 9.8.Space Science Reviews(常用缩写 Space Sci. Rev.) [1]
Scope
- Genre: this is a review journal and does not publish original research papers. Its purpose is to provide a contemporary synthesis of the various branches of space research, with the emphasis on scientific results and instruments in astrophysics, the physics of planetary systems, solar physics, and the physics of magnetospheres and interplanetary matter.
- Sources of manuscripts: alongside the collections the editors organise, regular review articles and special communications are accepted both by invitation and unsolicited. The editors state this openly and maintain a running list of recent publications, so commission is not the only route in.
- Topical collections: collections are normally led by guest editors whose expertise matches the subject, and themes are typically the outcome of a space mission, a line of investigation or an international workshop. Reprints of the workshop proceedings also appear as a book series.
- Audience: the readership comprises researchers across the branches of space science, the designers of instruments and missions, and planetary scientists, solar physicists and astrophysicists who want a single authoritative account. Reviews are typically long, with extensive references and figures.
- Partner institute: the journal works with the International Space Science Institute, whose workshops frequently yield collections here. Reprints of collections published in the journal also appear in that institute's book series.
- Open access: the journal is a hybrid title, so subscribers read the full text free of charge and authors may opt for paid immediate open access. The editors also operate a waiver route for authors who genuinely face difficulty in meeting the charge.
History
- 1962: the journal was founded by Kees de Jager of the Netherlands Space Research Organisation. He remained editor-in-chief from its inception until 2002, a span of more than forty years, and the purpose he set at the outset was the synthesis of the branches of space research.1962年: 期刊由荷兰空间研究组织的 Kees de Jager 创办,他自创刊起连任主编至 2002 年,长达四十余年,创刊时定下的宗旨即为综合空间研究的各分支。
- 2003 to 2024: Hans Bloemen took over as editor-in-chief and held the post for more than two decades, during which the journal consolidated its standing as one of the most widely cited review titles in space physics.2003年至2024年: Hans Bloemen 接任主编,任职二十余年,其间期刊在空间物理界影响力稳步上升,成为该领域被引最广的综述刊物之一。
- January 2025: Olivier Witasse became editor-in-chief, succeeding the retiring Hans Bloemen. He is a planetary scientist at the European Space Research and Technology Centre and has served as deputy or project scientist on the Huygens, Venus Express, Mars Express and JUICE missions.2025年1月: Olivier Witasse 就任主编,接替退休的 Hans Bloemen,他任职于欧洲空间研究与技术中心,是行星科学工作者,曾在惠更斯号、金星快车、火星快车与木卫二冰月探测器等任务中担任副手或项目科学家。
- Institutional partnership: the journal has a long-standing partnership with the International Space Science Institute, whose workshops are a principal source of collections here.
- Change in frequency: in earlier years each volume appeared in four issues, whereas recent volumes run to eight issues a year, the faster pace reflecting a rising number of collections.
- Recent broadening: the publisher opened a standing channel for regular reviews and special communications, so authors need no longer wait for a collection invitation. The journal thus keeps a steady flow of manuscripts outside the collections route. [2]
Editors
- Editor-in-chief: the journal is led by Olivier Witasse PhD, who took his doctorate at the Universite Joseph Fourier in Grenoble in 2000. His research concentrates on planetary upper atmospheres and planetary space weather, and encompasses Venus, Mars and its moons, comets, asteroids, Jupiter and its moon Europa, and Saturn and its moon Titan.
- Associate editors: five associate editors serve, drawn from the Southwest Research Institute, the California Institute of Technology, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Space Research Institute in Graz and the International Space Science Institute in Bern. Their small number is a consequence of the review format rather than an oversight.
- Refreshment of the board: associate editors are added by subject, with new appointments in space plasma physics and in planetary science in recent years. The seat formerly held by Maurizio Falanga of the International Space Science Institute, who died in 2025, has likewise been filled.
- Division of labour: collections normally do not run through the standing board. A guest editor assembles a panel of experts and takes full responsibility for the collection, and their expertise must match the topic. This is the most distinctive layer of the journal's editorial structure.
- Submission system: manuscripts are lodged through the publisher's online submission system. The editors solicit submissions year-round through two channels, calls for collections and the regular review route, with a median of ten days from submission to first decision. [3]
