Southern University of Science and Technology, known in Chinese as 南方科技大学 and in its own abbreviation as SUSTech, is a public research university in the Taoyuan area of Nanshan District, Shenzhen, Guangdong, owned and funded by the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government and placed 317th in the 2027 QS World University Rankings.南方科技大学（英文简称 SUSTech）是位于中国广东省深圳市南山区桃源街道的一所公立研究型大学，由深圳市人民政府举办并拨款，在 2027 年 QS 世界大学排名中位列第 317。

Shenzhen decided to prepare the university in March 2007, the Ministry of Education approved the preparation in December 2010 with institution code 14325, and it gave formal consent to establish the university in April 2012, the founding president Zhu Qingsheng planning it on the models of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the California Institute of Technology.深圳市于 2007 年 3 月决定筹建该校，教育部于 2010 年 12 月批准筹建（学校代码 14325）、又于 2012 年 4 月同意正式建立，创校校长朱清时以香港科技大学与加州理工学院为办学范本设计南科大。

The university is noted for its experiments in admissions and governance: it recruited 45 students of a teaching-reform class in February 2011 without ministry permission and awarded its own degrees, pioneered the 631 comprehensive-evaluation admission model in 2012, and in February 2022 both the university and its mathematics discipline were admitted to the national Double First-Class programme.该校以招生与治理改革著称：2011 年 2 月在不获教育部批准的情况下招收 45 名教改实验班学生并自授学位，2012 年首创「631」综合评价录取模式，2022 年 2 月学校与数学学科一同入选国家「双一流」建设。

History

• The preparation of the university began in March 2007, when the work report of the Shenzhen municipal government to the third session of the fourth municipal people's congress decided to prepare a new university, an office for the preparation being assembled in April 2007 with six staff drawn partly from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, an application filed with the Guangdong provincial government in June 2007 and the feasibility report approved in August 2007.2007 年 3 月，深圳市在第四届人民代表大会第三次会议的《政府工作报告》中决定筹建新型大学，4 月组建南方科技大学筹建工作办公室、聘用包括香港科技大学教授在内的 6 名工作人员，6 月首次向广东省人民政府提交筹建申请，8 月市政府批准《筹建南方科技大学论证报告》。

• In March 2008 the city's establishment committee created a dedicated preparation office responsible for everything before approval and enrolment, and that year the office and the Shenzhen Bureau of Public Works jointly ran an international competition for the campus design.2008 年 3 月，深圳市委机构编制委员会下发成立筹备办的通知，负责学校获批设立与招生办学前的各项筹备，同年筹备办与深圳市建筑工务署合办校园设计国际竞赛，香港建筑师严迅奇亦提交设计方案。

• The site was fixed in April 2009 in the Tanglang Hill area of Xili in Nanshan, covering 1,943,800 square metres with 630,000 square metres of floor area to be raised in three phases for an estimated ¥2.487 billion, of which ¥1.463 billion fell on the first phase, and in June 2009 the municipal standing committee agreed to appoint Zhu Qingsheng, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as founding president for a five-year term, planning the university on the models of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the California Institute of Technology.2009 年 4 月明确校址位于南山区西丽塘朗山片区，占地 194.38 万平方米、总建筑面积 63 万平方米，分三期建设、预计总投资 24.87 亿元，其中一期 14.63 亿元，同年 1 月市政府通过校园规划实施方案，6 月市委常委会议同意聘任中国科学院院士朱清时为创校校长、任期五年，朱清时计划参照香港科技大学与加州理工学院的办学和发展模式规划南科大。

• In January 2010 the university took over the buildings of the terminated Nankai University Shenzhen Financial Engineering College, commissioned in 2006, as its start-up campus, in February 2010 the establishment committee designated it a direct institution of the municipal government funded from the municipal purse as part of a reform of public-institution governance, in September 2010 the first phase of construction broke ground and in December 2010 the Ministry of Education issued its notice agreeing to the preparation, giving institution code 14325 and a three-year preparation period.2010 年 1 月南科大全面接收原南开大学深圳金融工程学院的校址与 2006 年投用的校舍作为启动校区，此前南开与深圳市政府因理念不合终止了这项合作，2 月机构编制委员会发文（深编〔2010〕23 号）明确其为市政府直属事业单位、经费由市财政核拨并尝试法人治理结构改革，9 月校园建设首期工程破土动工，12 月教育部下发同意筹建的通知、学校代码 14325、筹建期三年。

• Before that approval the university announced that it would admit students and award degrees on its own without ministry permission, and forty-five members of the first teaching-reform class enrolled in February 2011 and attended the university's first opening ceremony in March 2011, an experiment in escaping an examination system widely thought overdue for reform that drew close international attention and an instruction from State Councillor Liu Yandong that the pilot must proceed under the leadership of the party committee.在教育部批准之前，南科大宣布将避开高考进行自主招生与自授文凭，2011 年 2 月首届教改实验班 45 名新生报到、3 月举行首届教改实验班开学典礼，这一跳出当时亟需改革的教育制度的探索引发国际社会高度关注，同月国务委员刘延东批示：南方科技大学作为改革试点，一定要在党委领导下按规划纲要进行。

• In April 2011 Mayor Xu Qin chaired the city executive meeting that approved the draft interim administrative measures and the draft council charter, and in May 2011 the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government promulgated those measures as decree No. 231, making the university the first in the mainland to have its governing charter written into local law in the manner of the statutory universities of Hong Kong.2011 年 4 月许勤市长主持市政府常务会议审议并原则通过《南方科技大学管理暂行办法（草案）》与理事会章程，5 月深圳市政府以第 231 号令颁布《南方科技大学管理暂行办法》，以「一校一法」保障学校依法自主办学，使南科大成为大陆最早把大学章程写入地方立法的高等院校。

• The first council met in July 2011 to adopt the charter of the council and a draft university charter and to review the academic plan, budget and construction programme, and Zhu Qingsheng served as party committee secretary from July 2011, but the year also brought setbacks, the preparation staff from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology withdrawing in June 2011 and the 11-year-old prodigy Su Liuyi with three other reform-class students resigning.2011 年 7 月第一届理事会第一次会议审议通过《南方科技大学理事会章程》与《南方科技大学章程（草案）》，并审议学科规划、人才资源、财务预算、基建规划等十一项议程，朱清时自 2011 年 7 月起兼任党委书记，同年 6 月来自香港科技大学的筹建团队退出引发对前途的担忧，被誉为神童的 11 岁学生苏刘溢等 4 名教改班学生相继退学。

• Ziren Academy, the first of the residential colleges on which the university's model of whole-person education rests, was unveiled on 9 September 2011, its name inscribed by Zhu Qingsheng and drawn from the Great Learning's dictum that knowledge comes through the investigation of things.2011 年 9 月 9 日南科大第一个书院——致仁书院举行揭牌仪式，书院制参照香港与英国的舍堂制度以推行通识与全人教育，院名由创校校长朱清时题写、典出《礼记·大学》「致知在格物，物格而后知至」。

• A first advisory committee of five senior scholars was created in February 2012, chaired by Daniel Tsui-Yong Yang, then chancellor of the University of California, Santa Barbara, and in May 2012 the General Office of the Ministry of Education approved a plan under which the national Gaokao counted for 60 per cent, the university's own aptitude test for 30 per cent and high-school records for 10 per cent, the scheme known ever since as 631.2012 年 2 月学校成立首届顾问委员会，由杨祖佑等五位世界级学者组成并在 7 月选举加州大学圣巴巴拉分校校长杨祖佑为主任，5 月教育部办公厅批复同意按「6+3+1」模式招生，即高考成绩占 60%、学校能力测试占 30%、高中平时学业成绩占 10%。

• Formal establishment came in April 2012 when the Ministry of Education issued its consent to found the university, asking it to keep exploring a modern university system with Chinese characteristics and new ways of training innovative talent, 188 students were admitted that July across eight provinces, the establishment conference and opening ceremony were held in September 2012 before the administration building of the start-up campus, and by December 2012 the first stage of the new campus had finished 32 buildings totalling 202,600 square metres for 2,100 students.2012 年 4 月教育部同意建立南方科技大学，并在批复中要求学校「不断探索具有中国特色的现代大学制度，探索创新人才的培养模式」，7 月在 8 个省份录取 188 人，9 月成立大会暨开学典礼在启动校区行政楼前广场举行，12 月新校园一期首期工程 32 栋主体建筑全部完工、总建筑面积 20.26 万平方米、可容纳 2,100 名学生。

• The university moved wholly onto its own site between July and September 2013, when a commissioning ceremony marked the opening of the new academic year and 388 freshmen registered, and the start-up campus passed to Shenzhen University, which used it for its general hospital, while in October 2013 the party committee and the discipline-inspection commission were formally established under the Higher Education Law.2013 年 7 月南科大开始迁入新校区，9 月新校园启用仪式暨开学典礼举行、388 名新生报到，启动校区移交深圳大学用于建设深圳大学总医院，10 月学校正式成立中国共产党南方科技大学委员会与纪律检查委员会，撤销此前的临时党委。

• January 2014 brought Li Ming, formerly director of the Shenzhen public security bureau, in as party secretary, ending Zhu Qingsheng's dual role and prompting talk that the drive to de-administer the university had failed, Zhu stepped down as president in September 2014 at the end of his term, Zhengwei International Group signed a partnership giving the university a ¥5 million donation and a ¥100 million industrial investment fund in January 2014, and in November 2014 the twinned-cities university league of Shenzhen was launched with 28 universities from 13 countries.2014 年 1 月原深圳市公安局局长李铭出任党委书记，朱清时不再兼任此职，一度引发「去行政化」改革失败的议论，9 月朱清时任期届满卸任校长，同月正威国际集团与学校签约捐资 500 万元并设立 1 亿元技术产业投资基金，11 月深圳国际友好城市大学联盟在南科大发起成立、首批 13 个国家的 28 所高校加盟。

• In January 2015 the 28 reform-class students who met its requirements graduated with degrees awarded by SUSTech itself, a first in the mainland, and Chen Eleven, a fluid dynamicist and former vice-president of Peking University, took office as the second president with a plan to model the university on Stanford University and to build colleges of science, engineering, life and health and economics, management and humanities, the council having in March 2015 heard its charter reviewed and proposed changing the English abbreviation from SUSTC to SUSTech, whose first four letters match the English word for sustainability.2015 年 1 月教改实验班符合毕业条件的 28 名学生毕业、获南科大自行授予的学位，同月中国科学院院士、北京大学原副校长陈十一就任第二任校长，拟参照斯坦福大学调整规划并筹建理学院、工学院、生命与健康学院、经管与人文学院，3 月理事会审议《南方科技大学章程》并拟将英文简称由 SUSTC 改为 SUSTech，该缩写的字首与「sustainability」（可持续）一词一致、5 月章程在理事会获原则通过。

• Two more residential colleges, Zhicheng and Shude, opened in September 2015, the city's agreement with UNESCO in May 2015 having prepared the way for the International Centre for Higher Education Innovation to open on campus in June 2016 as 联合国教科文组织在亚太地区唯一专注于高等教育领域的二类中心, while the council appointed Wu Chuanyue and Tang Tao as vice-presidents in May 2015, approving the charter and the disciplinary plan in principle at the same meeting.2015 年 9 月致诚书院与树德书院成立，5 月学校与联合国教科文组织签署信托基金协议、拟依托南科大设立高等教育创新中心，理事会并聘任吴传跃、汤涛为副校长、原则通过学校章程和学科规划。

• June 2016 saw the first cohort of undergraduates holding ministry-recognised degrees graduate and Guo Yurong, former director of the Shenzhen education bureau, succeed as party secretary, the Zhixin and Shuli academies opened in September 2016, and the Shenzhen Grubbs Institute, a joint venture with the 2005 Nobel laureate in chemistry Robert H. • Admitted to the recommendation system for postgraduate study in August 2017, the university gathered fourteen leaders of world-class institutions into an international advisory board in October 2017, saw its vice-president Tang Tao elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in November 2017 as the first academician trained in Shenzhen, took 1,005 freshmen that July to pass 3,500 undergraduates, won its first major National Science Fund project in December 2017 and agreed with the Nanshan district government in the same month to build a university hospital, the地球与空间科学系 having been created in January 2017.2017 年 8 月入选新增研究生推免高校，10 月成立由 14 位世界一流大学领军人物组成的国际咨询顾问委员会，11 月副校长汤涛当选中国科学院院士、成为深圳本土培养的首位院士，7 月录取本科新生 1,005 人使在校生超过 3,500 人，12 月首获国家自然科学基金重大项目资助并与南山区人民政府签约合作建设大学附属医院，1 月设立地球与空间科学系。

• A doctoral degree-granting unit from 10 May 2018, the university opened the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Institute of Microelectronics on 1 June 2018, saw chemistry and materials science enter the top one per cent of ESI on 12 July 2018, took the Shenzhen People's Hospital and the Shenzhen Third People's Hospital as directly affiliated hospitals on 8 October 2018 and was admitted to Guangdong's priority high-level university programme with six disciplines on 13 November 2018, its cryo-electron microscopy centre having been unveiled that same month with claims to be the largest facility of the kind in China.2018 年 5 月 10 日新增为博士学位授予单位、快速完成本硕博培养体系构建，6 月 1 日深港微电子学院揭牌，7 月 12 日化学、材料科学两个学科首次进入 ESI 全球前 1%，10 月 8 日深圳市人民医院与深圳市第三人民医院成为直属附属医院，11 月 13 日整体进入广东省高水平大学重点建设高校行列、6 个学科入选重点建设学科，11 月 19 日冷冻电镜中心揭牌、规模据称居全国首位。

• In 2020 the Shenzhen Applied Mathematics Centre was approved in March as the city's first national-level mathematics centre and the university's first national research platform, unveiled in December alongside a tenth-anniversary assembly, Xue Qikun, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and former vice-president of Tsinghua University, became the third president in November, the School of Life Sciences opened that same month, more than five hundred artworks were donated by the sculptors Teng Wenjin and Qiao Hong in October, the College of Engineering, the SUSTech Centre, the academic-exchange centre and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences came into use in October, and the Times Higher Education table of September 2020 put the university inside the world's first three hundred for the first time.2020 年 3 月由南科大牵头的深圳应用数学中心获批，成为深圳首个国家级数学中心与南科大首个国家级科研平台、12 月正式揭牌，同月举行建校十周年庆祝大会并揭牌生命科学学院，11 月中国科学院院士、清华大学原副校长薛其坤出任第三任校长、公共卫生及应急管理学院揭牌，10 月校园二期部分项目竣工启用并公布六类空间名称、雕塑家滕文金与乔红向南科大捐赠 500 余件艺术作品，9 月泰晤士高等教育世界大学排名首次把该校列入全球 300 强。

• The Ministry of Education approved the SUSTech-King's College London School of Medicine in November 2021, the municipal authorities assigned the preparation of Shenzhen Ocean University to the university in October 2021, the motto 明德求是，日新自强 was promulgated at the opening ceremony on 3 September 2021 with its stone unveiled in December, Jiang Hong's predecessor Li Fengliang became party secretary in July 2021, the campus's second phase was completed in full that September, and in December 2021 the university won its first National Science Fund base-science centre project, on the mechanisms of neurological disease, as Xia Keqing was elected to the Academy and Xu Zhenghe and Efim Zelmanov became foreign academicians.2021 年 11 月教育部批准设立南方科技大学伦敦国王学院医学院，10 月市委市政府明确深圳海洋大学由南科大牵头筹建，9 月 3 日开学典礼上正式公布校训「明德求是，日新自强」、校训石于 12 月揭幕，7 月李凤亮任党委书记，9 月校园建设二期工程全面竣工、研究生新生人数首次超过本科新生，11 月夏克青当选中国科学院院士、徐政和与杰曼诺夫当选外籍院士，12 月牵头获批首个国家自然科学基金基础科学中心项目。

• On 14 February 2022 the ministry, the Ministry of Finance and the development and reform commission named SUSTech and its mathematics discipline to the second round of the national Double First-Class programme, the first self-trained doctoral student graduated in June 2022, enrolment passed ten thousand that July with 1,287 undergraduates and 1,915 postgraduates admitted, the mathematician Efim Zelmanov joined full time as a chair professor in September 2022, thirteen scholars entered the 2022 list of highly cited researchers in November and seven university-level research institutes, including the Carbon Neutrality Energy Research Institute and the Institute of Health and Medicine, were inaugurated in December 2022.2022 年 2 月 14 日教育部等三部委公布第二轮「双一流」建设高校及建设学科名单，南方科技大学及数学学科入选，6 月首位自主培养的博士生毕业，7 月录取本科新生 1,287 人、研究生新生 1,915 人使学生规模首次破万，9 月著名数学家埃菲·杰曼诺夫全职加入受聘讲席教授，11 月 13 位学者入选全球高被引科学家，12 月碳中和能源研究院、健康医学研究院等七大校级实体科研机构集中揭牌。

• In 2023 the medical school building broke ground in February, the main-campus university hospital in June, 127 first-generation SUSTech doctors and 27 clinical-medicine undergraduates graduated in June, Jiang Hong of Shantou University replaced Li Fengliang as party secretary that month, Guangdong's first New Cornerstone Science Laboratory was opened on campus, the university joined the second batch of national academies for exemplary engineers in September, five courses were certified as national first-class undergraduate courses in April, and in October Xue Qikun received the IEEE Oliver E. • Material science became the first ESI top-one-per-mille field in January 2024, chemistry followed in May and engineering in November, Xue Qikun received the 2023 State Preeminent Science and Technology Award in June 2024, the academy of artificial intelligence was founded in January 2026, neuroscience and behaviour made eighteen ESI top-one-per-cent fields in March 2026, the first cohort of thirteen excellence-teacher postgraduates arrived in September 2025 after the university joined the second batch of the national excellence-teacher programme in August 2024, ordinary-batch admissions ran for the first time in June 2025 in Guangdong, Zhejiang and Shandong, the chair professors Xia Haiping, Liu Weiping and Li Jun were elected academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in November 2025, and on 20 September 2026 the satellite PEGA-SUS 1 rode a Kinetica-1 rocket into orbit from Jiuquan with President Xue watching the launch.2024 年 1 月材料科学成为学校首个 ESI 全球前 1‰学科、5 月化学与 11 月工程学跟进，6 月薛其坤获颁 2023 年度国家最高科学技术奖，8 月入选第二批「国优计划」试点高校、9 月伦敦国王学院医学院首次录取中外合作办学新生，2025 年 4 月新增人工智能与口腔医学专业使本科专业增至 41 个、5 月 ESI 前 1%学科增至 17 个、6 月首次在普通本科批次招生、9 月迎来首届 13 名国优计划硕士新生、11 月夏海平、柳卫平、李隽三位讲席教授当选中国科学院院士，2026 年 1 月成立人工智能学院、3 月神经科学与行为学成为第 18 个 ESI 前 1%学科且联合研究成果入选 2025 年度中国科学十大进展，9 月 20 日「鹏城南科一号（PEGA-SUS 1）」卫星由力箭一号遥十八运载火箭在酒泉发射入轨、校长薛其坤与师生代表共同观礼。

• The university models its disciplines on world-class science and engineering institutions, teaching science, engineering and medicine with business and distinctive humanities at undergraduate, master's and doctoral level, and its ten colleges include the College of Science, the College of Engineering, the School of Life Sciences, the School of Medicine, the College of Business, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the School of Design.学校借鉴世界一流理工科大学的学科设置与办学模式，以理、工、医为主，兼具商科与特色人文社会科学，在本、硕、博三个层次办学，设有理学院、工学院、生命科学学院、医学院、商学院、人文社会科学学院、创新创业学院、设计学院等十大学院，另设半导体学院（国家卓越工程师学院）、马克思主义学院与南方科技大学伦敦国王学院医学院。

• As of its own published statistics the university runs 35 departments, schools and centres, 41 undergraduate majors, 23 master's programmes, 17 doctoral programmes and 7 postdoctoral stations, while the 2022 count had been 8 secondary colleges with 33 departments and centres and 37 majors, enrolment then stood at 10,263, of whom 4,804 were undergraduates and 5,459 postgraduates.按学校公布的统计数据，全校现有系（院）、中心 35 个，本科专业 41 个，硕士点 23 个，博士点 17 个，博士后科研流动站 7 个，而 2022 年 12 月的口径为 8 个二级学院、下设 33 个系（院）与中心、开设 37 个本科专业，当年在校生 10,263 人，其中本科生 4,804 人、研究生 5,459 人。

• Since 2012 undergraduate admissions have used the 631 comprehensive-evaluation model, with the Gaokao counting 60 per cent, the university's own test 30 per cent (a 25 per cent machine test plus a 5 per cent interview) and high-school records 10 per cent, an approach approved for a Guangdong pilot among seven universities in 2016 and applied in 2026 to admissions in 24 provinces and municipalities.本科招生自 2012 年起率先采用「631」综合评价录取模式：高考成绩占 60%、学校能力测试占 30%（机试 25%、面试 5%）、高中平时学业成绩占 10%，2016 年获教育部批准与其余 6 所高校在广东开展改革试点，2026 年已在 24 个省（区、市）实行。

• The campus is at 1088 Xueyuan Avenue in Taoyuan Subdistrict, Nanshan District, and the university's own statistics give it 1,980,000 square metres of land, roughly 480 acres, with 1,726,800 square metres of floor area planned and 975,000 square metres already built across a site of nine hills and one stretch of water whose buildings are advertised as green and energy-saving.校园位于深圳市南山区桃源街道学苑大道 1088 号，据学校统计数据占地总面积 198 万平方米（约合 480 英亩），规划总建筑面积 172.68 万平方米、已建成 97.50 万平方米，校园内九山一水，建筑体现「厚重、节能、实用、环保」理念，成为绿色建筑与生态校园的典范。

• The start-up campus in the same district, the inherited buildings of the Nankai University Shenzhen Financial Engineering College, served the university from 2010 until the move of 2013 and then passed to Shenzhen University for its general hospital.学校的启动校区沿用原南开大学深圳金融工程学院校舍，自 2010 年接收起一直使用至 2013 年整体迁入新校园，此后移交深圳大学用于建设深圳大学总医院。

• Its emblem turns the initials of the English name into a torch, the two S letters of South and Science, the U of University and the T of Technology, set against a graduated sky-blue taken from the glaze of Ru ware, while the university's Chinese name exists in two inscriptions, the original by the 1957 Nobel laureate Tsung-Dao Lee and the one in general use by the calligrapher Liu Zhengcheng.校徽把英文校名的首字母组成一把火炬，两个 S 分指 South 与 Science、U 指 University、T 指 Technology，背景为取自汝窑瓷釉的渐变色天青，象征为高教改革探路；校名题写现存两版，最初由 1957 年诺贝尔物理学奖得主李政道所书，如今广泛使用的是书法家刘正成的题写本。

• Zhu Qingsheng, a quantum chemist and molecular spectroscopist elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and former president of the University of Science and Technology of China, was appointed founding president in June 2009 and served until September 2014, also holding the party secretary's post from July 2011 to January 2014, and he inscribed the name of Ziren Academy.朱清时是量子化学与分子光谱学家、中国科学院院士、中国科学技术大学原校长，2009 年 6 月受聘为创校校长、任职至 2014 年 9 月，并自 2011 年 7 月至 2014 年 1 月兼任党委书记，致仁书院的院名即由他题写。

• Chen Eleven, a fluid dynamicist who had been vice-president of Peking University and dean of its school of mathematical sciences, led the university as its second president from January 2015 to November 2020, was elected to the World Academy of Sciences in January 2018 and received the city's education-reform pioneer title in September 2019.陈十一是流体力学家，曾任北京大学副校长与数学科学学院院长，2015 年 1 月至 2020 年 11 月任南科大第二任校长，2018 年 1 月当选发展中国家科学院院士，2019 年 9 月荣获「深圳教育改革先锋人物」称号。
