History
- The project reaches back to 1549, when Saint Francis Xavier, co-founder of the Society of Jesus, landed in Japan to preach Christianity and wrote to his fellow Jesuits hoping for a university in the Japanese capital, a plan that the bans under the Toyotomi regime and the Tokugawa shogunate postponed for more than four centuries.

Reputation
- In the QS World University Rankings 2027 Sophia University sits in the 951-1000 band, and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027 place it in the 2001-and-above band, so its global standing rests far less on table position than on its domestic selectivity and Catholic identity.
- Sophia is not listed in the 2026-2027 U.S. News Best Global Universities table and was not included in the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities, so none of its ranking claims rest on those two lists.
