Solid State Ionics
Solid State Ionics is an interdisciplinary journal devoted to diffusion, mass transport and reactivity in solids, founded in Amsterdam in April 1980 and published by Elsevier, running to about fourteen or fifteen volumes a year, one issue each. Its founding editor was M. Stanley Whittingham, the 2019 Nobel laureate in chemistry, and the journal is a benchmark title in solid-state electrochemistry.《固体离子学》(Solid State Ionics)是一份聚焦固体中扩散、传质与反应性的交叉学科期刊,一九八〇年四月创刊于阿姆斯特丹,由爱思唯尔(Elsevier)出版,每年约十四至十五卷、每卷一册。
Scope
Solid State Ionics organises physics, chemistry and materials science around the movement of ions in solids, its official scope listing five principal blocks of content. Its principal subject areas include:Solid State Ionics
- Physics and chemistry of defects: the physics and chemistry of defects in solids, covering their formation, migration and interactions.
- Reactions in and on solids: reactions within and on solids, such as intercalation, corrosion, oxidation and sintering.
- Ion transport: measurement, mechanisms and theory of ion transport, the journal's central block.
- Solid-state electrochemistry: solid-state electrochemistry, including electrochemical processes in batteries, fuel cells and sensors.

History
- Founding (April 1980): the journal was founded in April 1980, its first volume with issues one and two published by Elsevier Science in Amsterdam创刊(一九八〇年四月): 本刊于一九八〇年四月创刊,第一卷第一二合集由爱思唯尔科学公司在阿姆斯特丹出版;创刊编辑为时任埃克森研究公司研究员的斯坦利·惠廷厄姆,其因锂离子电池工作获二〇一九年诺贝尔化学奖。 the founding editor was M. Stanley Whittingham, then a researcher at Exxon Research and later a 2019 Nobel laureate in chemistry for his work on lithium-ion batteries.[2]
- Unchanged title and publisher: the journal has kept its title and its publisher since 1980, maintaining close academic ties with the international solid-state ionics community while remaining a non-society journal. [3]
- Editorial succession (about 2024): Joachim Maier of the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research edited the journal until 2024, when William C. Chueh of Stanford University took over. [4]
- Metric standing: the 2025 impact factor is 3.7, placing the journal in the second quartile of physical chemistry, with recent years in zones three to four of materials science in the Chinese Academy of Sciences ranking. [5]
Editors
The journal operates under an editor-in-chief with eight editors, founding editor Whittingham and an associate editorial board of about thirty-four, forty-three editors and board members in all across sixteen countries and regions. Elsevier's official 2025 figures give six days from submission to first decision, including editorial desk review, forty-three days to a decision after review, eighty-four days to acceptance and nine days from acceptance to online publication, with a published acceptance rate of thirty per cent. [3]
- William C. Chueh (editor since about 2024): professor of materials science and engineering at Stanford University and senior fellow of its Precourt Institute for Energy, working on ionic and electronic reactions in battery and energy-conversion materials. [6]
