Sogang University

Sogang University is a private Jesuit research university in the Mapo District of Seoul, South Korea, and the oldest and only Jesuit institution of higher education in the country.西江大学是位于韩国首尔麻浦区的私立耶稣会研究型大学，也是韩国历史最悠久、唯一的耶稣会高等学校。

It was established on 18 April 1960 by the Society of Jesus at the initiative of the Catholic hierarchy of Korea, after Pope Pius XII assured the Church that a Catholic university would be founded on Korean soil.学校由耶稣会于 1960 年 4 月 18 日创办，其缘起是韩国天主教教会，时任教宗庇护十二世曾允诺在韩国建立一所天主教高等学府。

History

• In 1948 Pope Pius XII entrusted the Society of Jesus with the task of establishing a Catholic institution of higher learning in Korea.1948 年，教宗庇护十二世将建立韩国天主教高等学府的任务委托给耶稣会。

• In October 1954 the Jesuit priest Theodore Geppert, who came from Sophia University in Tokyo, arrived in Korea to look for a suitable site for the planned college.1954 年 10 月，来自东京上智大学的耶稣会士盖培德神父抵达韩国，为筹办中的学院寻找合适校址。

• In February 1955 Jean-Baptiste Janssens, the twenty-seventh Superior General of the Society of Jesus, assigned the task of founding the college to the Wisconsin Province of Jesuits.1955 年 2 月，耶稣会第二十七任总会长詹森斯将创建该学院的任务指派给耶稣会威斯康星省。

• Father Leo Burns, superior of the Wisconsin Province, travelled to Korea and, with the Korean Catholic hierarchy, began negotiations with the Syngman Rhee government for a liberal arts college.威斯康星省会长伯恩斯神父前往韩国，与韩国天主教教会一道，就创办一所文理学院与李承晚政府展开磋商。

• In April 1990 the university unveiled the Albatross Tower near the main gate, designed by the alumni association to mark the thirtieth anniversary and bearing the motto Obedire Veritati.1990 年 4 月，学校在校门附近揭幕信天翁塔，由校友会为纪念建校三十周年而设计，塔身镌有校训 Obedire Veritati。

Student life

• The university motto is the Latin phrase Obedire Veritati, meaning obey the truth, and it is inscribed on the Albatross Tower beside the main gate.学校校训为拉丁文 Obedire Veritati，意为「服从真理」，镌刻于校门旁的信天翁塔上。

• The university colours are scarlet and silver, and its mascot is the albatross, from which the Albatross Tower takes its form.学校校色为猩红与银白，吉祥物与地标均为信天翁，信天翁塔即取其形制。

• The Sunrise Festival marks the start of a new school year, when students throw one another into the fountain beneath the Albatross Tower.日出节标志新学年的开始，学生们会互相把对方抛入信天翁塔下的喷泉中。
