Shenzhen University

Shenzhen University, commonly known as SZU and in Chinese as Shenzhen Daxue, is a municipal public research university in Nanshan District, Shenzhen, Guangdong, funded by the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government and organised into twenty-eight schools and colleges spread across two campuses covering 2.72 square kilometres.深圳大学（简称深大，Shenzhen University）是位于中国广东省深圳市南山区的市立公立研究型大学，由深圳市人民政府举办，设有 28 个学院，分布在两个校区，总占地 2.72 平方公里。

It was approved by the State Council in May 1983, it was declared open in September 1983 along with the special economic zone itself, and teaching began on 27 September 1983 with an intake of 216 students.该校于 1983 年 5 月经国务院批准创办，1983 年 9 月随经济特区一同正式宣告成立，并于 1983 年 9 月 27 日开始授课，首届录取新生 216 名。

History

• When Shenzhen was designated a special economic zone in 1980 the city had no institution of higher education, so in 1983 the municipal authorities proposed creating a university to serve the newly opened zone.1980 年深圳被设立为经济特区时全市还没有一所高等学校，1983 年深圳市提出创办一所大学以服务刚刚开放的经济特区。

• Mayor Liang Xiang chaired the preparatory group and famously pledged to "sell his trousers" to build the university, committing about half of the city's annual revenue, which was then less than one hundred million yuan.时任深圳市市长梁湘担任筹备小组组长，立下「卖掉裤子也要把大学建起来」的豪言，并决定拿出当时全市不足一亿元年财政收入的一半用于建校。
