Shape Memory and Superelasticity
Shape Memory and Superelasticity is published by Springer for the International Organization on Shape Memory and Superelastic Technologies, an affiliate society of ASM International, and its 2025 Journal Impact Factor is 2.4.《形状记忆与超弹性》由施普林格为国际形状记忆与超弹性技术组织出版,该组织是 ASM International 的下属学会,2025 年期刊影响因子 2.4。
Volume 1 appeared in 2015, the journal has kept a quarterly rhythm since then, and volume 12 is the 2026 volume with three issues closed so far.
Scope
- All classes of shape memory material are covered, so metals, shape memory ceramics, shape memory polymers and composites appear in the same volume without any hierarchy.
- The journal is organised around the response to external stimuli, taking in force, displacement, temperature, magnetic fields, irradiation and corrosive media as the conditions of central interest.
- Continuum mechanics, micromechanics and microstructurally informed constitutive modelling are named as the theoretical routes, and atomistic models sit alongside them where the scale is small enough to need them.
- Mathematics of microstructures is treated as a subject in its own right, which puts the geometry of martensitic variants within reach of a modelling paper as well.
- Advanced experimental techniques are part of the brief, from thermal and mechanical cycling to the application of magnetic and other external fields during a running test.
- Fatigue and fracture get separate attention because a shape memory component in service usually fails by accumulating cycles rather than by one overload event at the end.
- Environmental factors belong in the same discussion, since corrosive media change transformation temperatures and the usable strain a device can offer over its service life.
- Biomedical devices are a long-standing application area, and stents, orthodontic wires and surgical instruments are treated as engineering problems first and as clinical matters second in the journal.
- Actuators and thin films are handled with the same tools, and micro-electromechanical systems appear among the applications the scope names explicitly, which keeps device work close to materials work.
- Robotics and aerospace components sit beside civil engineering structures in the list, so damping devices and morphing skins are read as the same family of problems.
- New phenomena, new materials and new applications are the three things the aims say the journal is looking for, in that order rather than by accident.
- Modelling papers are expected to meet experiment somewhere, and the scope treats the two as complementary rather than as rival methods for the same question.
- Physics, materials science, mechanics and mathematics all contribute, which is why a paper may arrive from a metallurgy group and be read by applied mathematicians as well.
- Processing methods get a place of their own, since how a wire is drawn or a sheet rolled decides the transformation temperatures the finished part will show.
History
- Volume 1 came out in 2015 from Springer in Heidelberg, and the National Library of Medicine carries the subtitle advances in science and technology for it since.
- The society behind the title is the International Organization on Shape Memory and Superelastic Technologies, an affiliate society of ASM International, which is why ASM appears in the partnership line.
- Four issues are the standing pattern, and volumes 4 through 8 of the journal carried between 47 and 59 papers each across the years 2018 to 2022.
- Volume 9 for 2023 carried 61 papers and volume 10 for 2024 carried 49, so the count moves by a dozen without any change of scope at all.2023 年第 9 卷收 61 篇,2024 年第 10 卷收 49 篇,篇数一差就是一打,范围并没有变。
- Volume 11 for 2025 reached 69 papers, the largest of the recent volumes, and volume 12 had 49 papers across three issues when the record was read.2025
- The Journal Impact Factor was 2.6 for 2023, 2.4 for 2024 and 2.4 for 2025, while the five-year figure has held at 2.7 through the same years.
- It is third quartile in materials science, multidisciplinary, at 326 of 472 titles on the 31st percentile, measured in the Emerging Sources Citation Index edition of the release.
- The 2025 release records 1,048 citations and 62 citable items for the year, and 46.67 per cent of the articles are gold open access at publication.2025 年版记下总被引 1048 次、可引条目 62 篇,46.67% 的文章发表时即为金色开放获取。
- That ratio is high for a title that also sells subscriptions, and Springer describes the model as hybrid rather than fully open, which is how the fees page reads.
- PubMed lists the title for selected citations only, which means the record there is not a complete account of everything the journal has published so far.PubMed
- The quarterly rhythm has held since 2015, so four issues make a volume, and no separate supplement series runs beside them, even in the years when the paper count jumped.
- Papers dated a year earlier sometimes land in the next volume, so volume 4 holds material carrying 2017 dates and volume 12 holds 2025 material as well.
- The title has no MEDLINE indexing and nothing in PubMed beyond selected citations, which keeps it a materials journal rather than a clinical one in practice.
