Seminars in Vascular Surgery
Seminars in Vascular Surgery is a quarterly review journal from Elsevier, issued under the W.B. Saunders imprint, that devotes each issue to a single clinical problem in vascular and endovascular practice. It began in 1988, its editor-in-chief works at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and it publishes commissioned thematic collections rather than primary research. Its 2025 Journal Impact Factor is 2.4 and its CiteScore is 4.6.《Seminars in Vascular Surgery》是 Elsevier 以 W.B.
Scope
- The stated aim is narrow by design. Each issue examines the latest thinking on one clinical problem and sets out the diagnostic and operative techniques now used to manage it, so that practising surgeons can extend their range.
- Aortic disease dominates the catalogue. Ascending and arch repair, thoracoabdominal aneurysm, type B dissection and the device platforms built for each aortic segment have all carried entire issues in recent volumes.
- Carotid work runs through the file. Trial evidence on endarterectomy against stenting, the measurement of procedural stroke risk and the selection of asymptomatic patients are recurring subjects, and a 2026 collection revisited contemporary management of carotid artery stenosis.
- Peripheral arterial disease and chronic limb-threatening ischemia appear as reviews of bypass grafting, plain and drug-coated balloon angioplasty, atherectomy and the organisation of limb-salvage services.
- Venous topics take in varicose veins, chronic venous insufficiency, iliofemoral deep vein thrombosis and post-thrombotic syndrome. Reviews on lymphedema and lymphatic surgery are fewer, yet they keep appearing.
- Hemodialysis access has a standing place in the schedule. Fistula planning and maturation, graft surveillance, catheter-related infection and the rescue of failing accesses all turn up as review subjects.
- Vascular trauma and emergency vascular surgery have received dedicated issues, covering extremity injury, resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion and damage-control approaches in the operating room.
- Noninvasive diagnosis belongs to the remit. Duplex ultrasound, computed tomographic angiography and magnetic resonance angiography are reviewed with attention to the point at which each modality changes a surgical decision.
- Device-centred reviews describe stent grafts, balloons, covered metal stents and access-site closure systems, and set registry and trial evidence on durability beside what high-volume operators report from practice.
- Open operative craft has not been retired from the pages. Exposure, conduit choice, graft infection and the reoperative abdomen and groin are each treated in their own right.
- Medical management runs alongside the technical material, with reviews on anticoagulation, antiplatelet strategy, risk stratification and the perioperative care of patients carrying several comorbidities.
- Quality and outcomes work draws on registries, administrative claims and single-centre series to examine case selection, volume-outcome gradients and the way complications are defined and counted.
- Team-based practice is addressed head-on. A 2025 collection on complex vascular disorders gathered contributions on shared decision-making, the roles of allied health staff and the running of multidisciplinary clinics.
- Care of older and frail patients has its own issue, covering frailty assessment, conversations about goals of care and the boundary beyond which further intervention stops serving the patient.
- Training, simulation, credentialing and payment policy complete the scope, a mix that shows how far the editors read the remit of a vascular journal.
History
- The first volume appeared in 1988 from W.B. Saunders of Philadelphia, in the years when vascular surgery was separating from general surgery as a specialty of its own.
- Volume 6 opened in 1993, the year the National Library of Medicine took the title into MEDLINE and PubMed. Coverage has run from volume 6, number 1 without a break.
- The single-topic model was fixed from the start. A guest editor takes one operation, one disease or one controversy, recruits the authors and writes the opening editorial that frames the collection.
- Saunders itself changed hands more than once. The imprint sat inside Harcourt Brace Jovanovich at launch and reached Elsevier in 2001, when Reed Elsevier bought Harcourt's scientific and medical publishing business.
- The Saunders name survived the transfer. Elsevier still lists the journal under the Elsevier - WB Saunders imprint, and the Philadelphia place of publication recorded by NLM has outlived the dispersal of the original editorial office.
- Volume numbering has run unbroken since 1988, and the four issues of a volume still appear in March, June, September and December, a quarterly rhythm the journal has never abandoned.
- Print ISSN 0895-7967 dates from the first volume. The electronic ISSN 1558-4518 was added for the online edition, which now carries current issues and the complete back file on ScienceDirect.
- Digital delivery changed how the material is used. Reviews appear as individually citable articles with their own DOIs, so the themed issue survives as an organising idea rather than as the unit of access.
- Recent volumes show the formula intact. Vascular Care in the Aging Population ran in September 2025 under Sonia Talathi and Yana Etkin, and a carotid collection edited by Jesse A. Columbo followed in March 2026. 《Vascular Care in the Aging Population》于 2025 年 9 月出版,由(Sonia Talathi)与(Yana Etkin)主编,随后(Jesse A. Columbo)主编的颈动脉合集在 2026 年 3 月推出。
- Citation metrics have moved sharply. The Journal Impact Factor stood at 1.222 for 2022, climbed to 3.3 for 2023 and has held at 2.4 for both 2024 and 2025.
- In the 2025 Journal Citation Reports the title sits Q3 in PERIPHERAL VASCULAR DISEASE, at 53 of 100, and Q2 in SURGERY, at 95 of 321. The gap shows how differently the two audiences cite review literature.
- Output stays small by intent. JCR counted nine citable items in 2025, and citations have accumulated slowly, reaching about 1,300 in total with a cited half-life close to five years.
- Open access arrived as an option rather than a conversion. The journal runs hybrid publication, roughly 22 percent of 2025 content was gold open access, and subscription articles stay closed to non-subscribers.
Editors
- Caitlin W. Hicks, a vascular surgeon at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, holds the editor-in-chief post. Her published work centres on vascular outcomes and health services research.
- The board is compact. Elsevier lists 21 editors and board members from three countries, eighteen in the United States, two in Canada and one in France, which keeps the journal North American in outlook.
- Several members carry defined portfolios. Anahita Dua at Massachusetts General Hospital works on carotid, peripheral and aortic disease, and Peter Rossi at the Medical College of Wisconsin on aortic dissection and visceral aneurysm.
- One European member, Fabien Lareyre of the Antibes Juan les Pins Hospital Center, works on artificial intelligence and e-health in vascular surgery. His presence marks how far the journal's net now reaches beyond open technique.
- Guest editors are named issue by issue and are usually senior specialists in the subject. Sara L. Zettervall led the 2026 collection on endovascular management of the aortic arch, Eric A. Secemsky the 2025 issue on team-based care.
- Almost everything is commissioned. Proposals for a themed issue go to the editor-in-chief, who weighs whether the topic is timely and whether a guest editor with the standing to recruit the right authors can be found.
- Peer review is single anonymized. Reviewers know the authors, authors do not know the reviewers, and submissions judged suitable go to at least two external referees.
- Themed collections follow the same standard with one difference. A guest editor may send manuscripts out and recommend a decision, while the editor-in-chief keeps the final call and oversight of publishing ethics.
- Turnaround is advertised on the journal page. Five days pass from submission to a first decision, 30 days to a decision after review, 61 days to acceptance and five days from acceptance to online publication.
- Decisions can be appealed once under Elsevier's appeal policy. Editors also step aside from any manuscript they wrote, co-authored or hold a commercial interest in.
- Each collection opens with a short editorial, usually by the guest editor, that states why the topic matters now and what the assembled reviews are meant to settle.
- Authors come from well beyond the board, and the reviews set North American practice beside European and Asian experience. Topics such as device availability and access to aortic centres need that contrast.
- The masthead carries no deputy or associate editors between the editor-in-chief and the board, so the thematic work is carried issue by issue by named guest editors.
