Science
Science is a multidisciplinary weekly academic journal sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and one of the most heavily cited academic journals in the world. It publishes original research across physics, biology, chemistry, astronomy and the earth sciences under famously strict selection criteria, carrying the most consequential advances in those fields within a dozen issues a year.《科学》(''Science'''',无固定缩写)是美国科学促进会(American Association for the Advancement of Science 简称 AAAS)主办的综合性学术周刊,也是世界范围内引用量最高的学术期刊之一。
Scope
Science holds that a paper should alter how a field perceives a problem rather than add local data inside an existing framework, and accordingly requires both a reproducible experimental basis and a conclusion its readers would not have anticipated. Its principal subject areas include:Science
- Physics and astronomy: quantum information and quantum computing, new phases of condensed matter, cosmological observation and dark matter searches, elementary particle experiments and high-energy astrophysics.
- Life sciences: genome and transcriptional regulation, protein structure and function, developmental and regenerative biology, immunology, neuroscience and the study of consciousness.
- Chemistry and materials: catalytic reaction mechanisms, single-molecule and surface science, new methods in synthetic chemistry, and energy and battery materials.
- Earth and planetary sciences: climate dynamics, paleoenvironments and the carbon cycle, seismology and planetary interiors, and deep-ocean and polar research.
- Science and public policy: public health policy, energy and climate policy, and research on science communication and the organization of research.
- Interdisciplinary and emerging fields: bioinformatics and computational biology, synthetic biology, neuromorphic engineering, cryptography and information science.
The journal runs recurring special issues assembled by the editorial board, normally appearing in step with the associated feature articles. Research articles predominate, alongside reviews, short data reports and policy commentary. The journal publishes neither an acceptance rate nor a review duration, and competition for its pages has always been exceptionally severe. [1]
History
- Founding, interruption and revival (1880–1883): the journal was founded in New York on 3 July 1880 by the journalist and science writer John Michels, with some of the initial backing coming from Thomas Edison. Michels died within months of the launch, the journal ceased publication in March 1882, and in February 1883 Alexander Graham Bell and Gardiner Greene Hubbard bought the rights and resumed publication with Samuel Harding Scudder in the editorial chair. [1]
- Entry into the society (1900–1944): the journal was sold in 1894 to James McKeen Cattell for five hundred dollars, and by an agreement between Cattell and the society secretary Leland O. Howard became the association's official journal in on Cattell's death in 1944 ownership passed formally to the association.[2]
- Circulation expansion (1958): in 1958 the journal absorbed The Scientific Monthly, raising its circulation from roughly 38,000 to some 61,000 copies and fixing the scale it has held since. [3]
- Still not fully open access: the journal remains subscription-based and opens its content free of charge only twelve months after publication至今未转为完全开放获取: 本刊始终维持订阅制,并仅提供发表满十二个月后的免费阅读;同一学会体系中真正采取完全开放获取的是姊妹刊《科学进展》,本刊并非如此。 the fully open-access title in the same society family is the sister journal Science Advances, not this one.[2]
- Metric standing: the impact factor has long been among the highest across all disciplines, reaching 47.3 in the association publishes neither a CiteScore nor an acceptance rate or time to first decision for the title.[4]
Editors
The journal is edited by an editor-in-chief assisted by an executive editor and a senior executive editor, with the association deliberately concentrating editorial responsibility across the Science family of titles. Tenures of individual editors-in-chief have typically run about three years, making the post one of high turnover. [5]
- H. Holden Thorp (editor-in-chief since October 2019): the twenty-first editor-in-chief of the journal, who holds an academic position in the Department of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has since taken charge of editorial affairs across all of the association's publications. His predecessor Jeremy M. Berg took office in July 2016 and served about three years and three months, and before him came Marcia McNutt. [6]
- Current editorial layer: the same masthead also names an executive editor and a senior executive editor, who together carry the day-to-day manuscript flow and the publishing business. [6]
- Founding and early editors: the first editor-in-chief was the founder John Michels himself创办与早期编辑: 首任主编即创办者约翰·米切尔斯;其去世后由贝尔与哈伯德延请的塞缪尔·哈丁·斯卡德主持,直至十九世纪末。 after his death the journal was run by Samuel Harding Scudder, retained by Bell and Hubbard, into the closing years of the nineteenth century.[1]
- Standing in the sciences: for decades one of the most heavily cited academic journals anywhere, its papers routinely form the base citations of later reviews and textbooks, and it acts as a coordinator of the research agenda across otherwise unrelated disciplines. [4]
