RSC Sustainability
RSC Sustainability is a peer-reviewed, gold open access journal launched by the Royal Society of Chemistry, publishing solutions-focused research across the chemical sciences that tackles sustainability challenges and advances the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with a 2025 Journal Impact Factor of 6.6.《RSC 可持续性》(RSC Sustainability)是英国皇家化学会(Royal Society of Chemistry)创办的同行评审金色开放获取期刊,发表致力于解决可持续性挑战、推进联合国可持续发展目标的化学科学解决方案研究,2025 年影响因子为 6.6。
Scope
- The journal welcomes all solutions-focused research dedicated to solving sustainability challenges and reports advances in chemistry that contribute to and enable one or more of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with authors asked to explain the link in a Sustainability Spotlight section.
- As an inclusive and interdisciplinary journal it celebrates multidisciplinary collaboration as well as traditional chemical science contributions, and it seeks submissions from the academic, industry, regulatory and government sectors.
- Its scope covers technologies to achieve responsible consumption and production of chemical products, including the efficient use of natural resources, the elimination of hazardous substances in production and use through sustainable and green chemistry, and the reuse and recycling of chemical products in a circular economy.
- Methods to analyse these processes, notably techno-enviro-economics, are explicitly in scope, and research claiming greater sustainability must be evidence-based, with quantitative measurements of toxicity, environmental persistence and performance comparisons against existing technologies.
- Authors are encouraged to follow life cycle thinking and to present side-by-side comparisons with existing technologies, while papers that primarily aim to increase the economic exploitation of non-renewable resources fall outside the journal's scope.
- The journal nevertheless welcomes innovative chemical solutions for legacy environmental pollutants, particularly transformative approaches to environmental remediation, and it publishes experimental and theoretical work across the breadth of materials science.
- Article types include research papers, communications, critical reviews and tutorial reviews, and the journal complements the Royal Society of Chemistry's premier sustainability title Green Chemistry.
History
- The Royal Society of Chemistry announced the journal in May 2022 as one of three new gold open access titles alongside EES Catalysis and Sustainable Food Technology, as part of its sustainability programme and its commitment to the SDG Publishers Compact.
- The journal opened for submissions in August 2022 and published its first issue as volume 1, number 1 in January 2023, introduced by an inaugural editorial from the founding editor-in-chief. [1]
- The launch responded to the decision of the United Nations Environment Assembly in March 2022 to establish a solutions-focused science-policy panel on chemicals, waste and pollution prevention, and the journal aims to host research that informs such policy interfaces.
- Article processing charges were waived for all authors during the first two years and fully covered by the Royal Society of Chemistry until mid-2025, after which an APC of GBP 2,100 applies, with institutional agreements, discounts and waivers available and a choice of CC BY or CC BY-NC licences.
- The journal was launched as a bimonthly title and now publishes monthly, and it received its first Journal Impact Factor of 4.9 in 2024, rising to 6.6 in 2025.
