History

• William Marsh Rice, who had made his fortune in Texas supplying planters and trading cotton and sugar and who himself owned enslaved people, wrote his will on 19 May 1891, leaving his estate to establish an institute in the state capital of Austin to serve Houston and the white citizens of Texas without tuition威廉·马什·赖斯靠在得州向种植园主供货以及棉花、食糖贸易发家，他本人亦拥有奴隶并从中获益；1891 年 5 月 19 日，他立下遗嘱，将遗产用于在州府奥斯汀设立一所学院，免除学费以服务休斯顿与得州白人居民。

• On 29 April 1904 the board of trustees took legal control of the estate and committed it to the school, with the Houston merchant James A. • The university has no separate motto, and instead its seal carries the words Letters, Science and Art, taken from the phrase in the founder's will, while its alma mater Rice's Honor was written by Ben H.
