Proceedings of the ACM on Programming Languages
Proceedings of the ACM on Programming Languages is a gold open access journal of the Association for Computing Machinery that first appeared in 2017 and publishes work selected for the major SIGPLAN conferences. Each issue is devoted to one conference, and its 2025 impact factor is 3.3.《ACM
Scope
- The journal publishes research on all aspects of programming languages, from design to implementation.
- Its range runs from mathematical formalisms to empirical studies, so both proofs and measurements have a place in it.
- Type systems and the semantics of languages are central subjects.
- Program analysis and verification are covered, since a tool that reasons about code must rest on a sound theory.
- Compilers and runtime systems appear among the topics the journal publishes.
- Concurrency, parallelism and the theory of computation are taken as subjects in their own right.
- Functional languages and logic programming are well represented, because two of the affiliated conferences serve those communities.
- Domain specific languages are studied, and work on their design sits inside the programme.
- Software testing and debugging are named among the areas the journal serves.
- Security, probabilistic computation and verification of systems appear on the list of interests.
- Each issue belongs to a conference, so the papers of POPL, of PLDI, of ICFP and of OOPSLA are gathered in their own numbers.
- An issue covers a subject area that the conference it serves sets out in its call for papers.
- Session types and effect systems appear among the subjects, since they govern how a program may behave at run time.
- Garbage collection and memory management are covered, because a runtime has to reclaim what it no longer needs.
- Language interoperability is studied, so work on calling across the boundary between two languages has a place.
- Formal methods and mechanised proof are taken, and a paper may rest on a development carried out in a proof assistant.
- Empirical studies of how programmers work are also welcome, which places measurement beside theory.
- A special issue may be opened for a new area, and its scope is set out in the call that announces it.
- Optimisation and program transformation are studied, since a compiler has to change code while keeping its meaning.
- Probabilistic and differentiable programming appear among the newer areas the journal takes.
- Machine learning is taken where it bears on language design, since tooling for code now leans on models.
- The journal carries work on programming education when a study yields a result of general use.
- It publishes papers on the tools that programmers use, from editors to build systems.
- Static analysis and abstract interpretation are studied, since a tool claims facts about a program before it runs.
- Work on the correctness of concurrent programs appears, where a small change of timing can alter the result.
- The journal takes papers that prove things about programs, since a machine-checked argument carries weight.
History
- The journal was founded in 2017, when its first volume appeared.
- It was created so that a journal, rather than the proceedings of a conference, could carry the archival record of the field.
- (Philip Wadler) was its inaugural editor-in-chief.(Philip Wadler)
- The Association for Computing Machinery publishes it, and the journal appears in electronic form only.
- Its electronic number is 2475-1421.
- Publication is gold open access, and articles carry a Creative Commons attribution licence.
- The journal is produced in close collaboration with the Special Interest Group on Programming Languages.
- Its volumes have run each year since the first, and the tenth volume was in progress in 2026.
- The impact factor rose from 2.2 for 2023 to 3.3 for 2025, with a five-year figure of 3.4.
- It is indexed in Scopus and in DBLP, and it is covered by the Emerging Sources Citation Index.
- Every submission receives two rounds of reviewing before a decision is reached.
- Authors are told that they can expect an initial decision in under three months.
- Each issue is announced through a public call for papers, so the schedule is known in advance.
- The journal took the place of the printed proceedings of the conferences it serves, so a paper is cited from the journal and not from a proceedings volume.
- Each annual volume collects the issues of that year, and the numbering runs by volume rather than by a count of issues.
- The publisher issues the journal on its digital library, where the papers are found beside the rest of its catalogue.
- A copyright line on each paper states that the author keeps the rights and grants a broad licence.
