Physical Therapy in Sport
Physical Therapy in Sport is the official journal of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports and Exercise Medicine, issued by Elsevier and recognised by the International Federation of Sports Physical Therapy and The Sports Massage Association.《Physical Therapy in Sport》是特许运动与运动医学物理治疗师协会的机关刊,由 Elsevier 出版,并获国际运动物理治疗联合会与运动按摩协会认可。
It began in 2000 and carries work on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of injury, together with the wider ground of sports medicine and rehabilitation, in six volumes a year.
The 2025 impact factor is 2.3 and CiteScore 4.4, and the Journal Citation Reports put it 46th of 175 titles in rehabilitation.2025 年的影响因子为 2.3,CiteScore 为 4.4,期刊引证报告把它在康复类 175 种刊中排在第 46 位。
Scope
- Its masthead names one owning association and three partner bodies, with ACPSM holding the title while IFSPT and The Sports Massage Association endorse it and SONAFE in Brazil is listed as an affiliated society.
- The stated purpose is to give the professions that work in sports and exercise medicine, and in rehabilitation, a forum for research and for material drawn straight from clinical practice.
- Injury sits at the centre. Diagnosis, treatment and prevention are named in that order, which runs from the clinic appointment back to the training week that caused the problem.
- Around that core the remit opens onto sports medicine and sports rehabilitation at large, so load management, exercise prescription and return-to-play papers share a volume with clinical trials.
- Usefulness is the test the aims page sets. A paper should be readable by a clinician in post and change something in the next clinic, instead of adding a line to a literature list.
- Continuing professional development falls inside that brief, which is why review material and teaching pieces count as core content and not as filler between trials.
- Original research is capped at roughly 4,000 words, a ceiling that keeps an article inside one sitting and leaves the detail to be argued in the methods rather than rehearsed at length.
- Reviews carry the same 4,000-word ceiling whether the authors are summarising a treatment or pooling trials into a systematic review.
- Case studies have a standing slot. In a field where one unusual presentation can teach more than a small trial, a single well-documented patient is publishable on its own.
- Masterclasses form the didactic strand. Most are commissioned by the editors, and a proposal that arrives uninvited has to be discussed with the editorial office before any writing begins.「masterclass」是偏示范与说理的一类。
- An agreed masterclass goes in under the Feature Article category, the route the guide gives to work the editors have already asked about.
- Book reviews run as a short standing section, and they are where the journal's teaching voice comes through most plainly.
- Conference reports appear occasionally and on no fixed schedule, so the section is read as a record of what a meeting argued rather than as a standing beat.
- The readership is wider than one profession. Sports physicians, physiotherapists and rehabilitation scientists appear in the same pages, and the prose is kept plain enough for all of them.
History
- The opening issue is dated February 2000 and is volume 1, number 1. Churchill Livingstone of Edinburgh and New York was the imprint, and the DOIs from that period begin with 10.1054.
- Elsevier publishes it today, while the library record still carries the founding imprint, so a citation from 2000 and one from 2026 look as though they come from different houses.
- Volume numbering follows a pattern of its own. Six volumes appear each year, each volume holds a single issue, no issue number is printed, and articles carry numbers instead of page ranges.
- Those six volumes land in January, March, May, July, September and November. That makes 2024 volumes 65 to 70, 2025 volumes 71 to 76 and 2026 volumes 77 to 82.
- A single volume holds between 13 and 25 papers, a thin bundle by monthly standards, and the whole contents list fits on one screen.
- Output has travelled a long way since 2019, when Crossref counted 157 items. The next two years rose to 177 and then 200, and 2022 brought 138.
- The recent run reads 115 in 2023, 99 in 2024, 117 in 2025 and 112 across the first ten months of 2026, so the slide of the early decade has flattened.
- Five impact factors read 2.365, 2.92, 2.2, 2.4 and 2.3 for the years 2021 to 2025, a band narrow enough that the order of the years matters less than the level.2021 至 2025 年的五个影响因子依次为 2.365,2.92,2.2,2.4 与 2.3,区间窄,年度之间的排序不如水平本身要紧。
- The 2025 Journal Citation Reports rank it 46th of 175 in rehabilitation at the 74th percentile, and 59th of 136 in sport sciences, with a JCI of 0.99.2025 年的期刊引证报告把它排在康复类 175 种里的第 46 位,百分位 74,运动科学类 136 种里的第 59 位,JCI 为 0.99。
- That file also counts 4,286 citations, a cited half-life of 6.4 years and an annual output of 104 articles, the profile of a mid-sized clinical title with a steady tail.
- MEDLINE coverage starts at volume 9, number 1, dated February 2008, eight years after the launch issue and the point from which the run can be searched in one place.MEDLINE
- Two ISSNs are in use. The print number is 1466-853X and the online number 1873-1600, and the second is the one to quote for a paper read on ScienceDirect.
- Open access has been offered on a hybrid basis for years. Authors may pay to free a paper, the gold share reached 39.26 percent in the 2025 file, and the subscription route costs an author nothing.
Editors
- Lee Herrington of the University of Salford holds the editor's chair, and the masthead lists him alone in that role rather than as half of a pair.
- Four associate editors divide the spread, David Bazett-Jones at High Point University, Ronaldo Briani at São Paulo State University, Lisa Custer at Towson University and Bradley Neal at the University of Essex.四位副编辑分开把关,他们是 High Point University 的 David Bazett-Jones,São Paulo State University 的 Ronaldo Briani,Towson University 的 Lisa Custer,以及 University of Essex 的 Bradley Neal。
- Two editorial advisors sit above the routine queue, Paula Beckenkamp in Sydney and Sergio Montero Navarro in Moncada, Spain.
- Bart Dingenen in Diepenbeek handles social media, a post that speaks to how readers now come across a paper.
- Six people form the editorial committee, Jill Cook in Burwood, Stuart Elwell in West Bromwich, Keith George in Liverpool, Nicola Phillips in Cardiff, Timothy Sell in Pittsburgh and Lynn Snyder-Mackler in Newark.
- Thirteen members make up the international advisory board, drawn from Perth, Winnipeg, Coleraine, Amsterdam, Springfield, Manchester, Tel Aviv, Morgantown, two in Auckland, Johannesburg, Singapore and Doha.
- The board page counts 35 people from 14 countries and territories, eight of them in the United Kingdom, eight in the United States and six in Australia.
- Review is double anonymized. Author and reviewer do not see each other's names, and after an editorial screen most manuscripts go to at least two reviewers who work independently.
- An editor with a stake in a manuscript steps aside, and the appeal rule is tight, since a submission gets one appeal and no second one.
- Publishing is hybrid. Choosing open access costs 3,370 US dollars before tax, and an author who stays on the subscription route pays nothing to publish.
- Speed is quoted as medians. Three days to a first decision, 81 days to a decision after review, 101 days to acceptance, and two days from acceptance to going online.
