Paleobiology
Paleobiology is a quarterly peer-reviewed journal of the Paleontological Society, published by Cambridge University Press on the Society's behalf, which since 1975 has been devoted to biological paleontology, macroevolution and macroecology, with a 2025 Journal Impact Factor of 2.9(Paleobiology)是古生物学会的旗舰季刊,1975 年创刊,现由剑桥大学出版社代表学会出版,聚焦生物古生物学、宏演化与宏观生态学,2025 年期刊影响因子为 2.9。
Scope
- It publishes original contributions of any length, normally ten to fifty manuscript pages, dealing with any aspect of biological paleontology
- Emphasis is placed on biological or paleobiological processes and patterns, including macroevolution, extinction, diversification, speciation, functional morphology, biogeography, phylogeny, paleoecology, molecular paleontology and taphonomy重点置于生物或古生物学过程与格局,包括宏演化、灭绝、多样化、物种形成、功能形态学、生物地理、系统发育、古生态、分子古生物学与埋藏学。
- It also welcomes work on natural selection and on patterns of variation, abundance and distribution in space and time, as well as geobiology
- Taxonomic papers are welcome if they have significant and broad applications, and papers on recent organisms are appropriate if they are of particular interest to paleontologists分类学论文须具备重大而广泛的应用价值方可接收,涉及现生生物与系统的论文若对古生物学家有特别意义亦属适合。
- Papers should typically interest readers from more than one specialty, and symposium volume proposals should be discussed in advance with the editors
- It is one of the two flagship journals of the Paleontological Society and favours interpretive biological questions over purely descriptive taxonomy
History
- It was founded in 1975 by the Paleontological Society, which had been established in 1908, and its first volume and issue appeared that year该刊由 1908 年成立的古生物学会于 1975 年创办,同年出版第一卷第一期。
- The proposal came from James W. Valentine, then president-elect of the Society, who sought a new journal in which biologists and paleontologists could publish together创办提案出自时任学会当选会长 James W. Valentine,他意在创办一份供生物学家与古生物学家共同发表的新刊。
- Its founding co-editors were Thomas J. M. Schopf and Ralph Gordan Johnson, both of the University of Chicago, and the title was shortened from Journal of Paleobiology to Paleobiology首任共同主编为 Thomas J. M. Schopf 与 Ralph Gordan Johnson,两人均任职芝加哥大学,刊名由 Journal of Paleobiology 删定为 Paleobiology。[1]
- It has never been renamed since 1975 and was originally published by the Society before being taken over by Cambridge University Press on the Society's behalf, with the copyright held by the Society该刊自 1975 年创刊至今刊名从未变更,最初由学会出版,后由剑桥大学出版社代表学会托管出版,版权归学会所有。
- It is a quarterly journal with four issues a year in February, May, August and November, and after a long period of hybrid open access it became fully open access with volume 51 in
- Its 2025 Journal Impact Factor is 2.9, ranking third among fifty-eight journals in Paleontology and twenty-fifth among seventy-seven in Biodiversity Conservation其 2025 年期刊影响因子为 2.9,在古生物学类 58 种期刊中排名第三,在生物多样性保护类 77 种中排名第二十五。
Editors
- The editor-in-chief is Erin Saupe, professor of palaeobiology at the University of Oxford, whose research concerns the interaction of life and environment over geological time现任主编 Erin Saupe,牛津大学古生物学教授,研究生命与环境在地质时间尺度上的相互作用。
- There are four editors, namely Nicolás Campione of the University of New England in Australia, Melanie Hopkins of the American Museum of Natural History, Andrew Leslie of Stanford University and Adam Tomašových of the Slovak Academy of Sciences另有四位编辑,为澳大利亚新英格兰大学的 Nicolás Campione、美国自然历史博物馆的 Melanie Hopkins、斯坦福大学的 Andrew Leslie 与斯洛伐克科学院的 Adam Tomašových。
- About twenty associate editors serve, drawn from the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Norway, Italy, Argentina, Australia and elsewhere
- The managing editor is Jessica Kastigar, who is based in Cincinnati in the United States编辑主任为 Jessica Kastigar,常驻美国辛辛那提。
- All manuscripts undergo single-anonymised peer review, in which referees know the authors but the authors do not know the referees, and research and review articles are handled within three weeks所有稿件均经单盲同行评审(审稿人知作者身份而作者不知审稿人身份),研究论文与综述的评审时限各为三周。
- Symposium volume proposals must be discussed with the editors in advance, taxonomic papers are accepted only when broadly significant, and the journal funds the deposit of data, code and supplementary material in Dryad and Zenodo主题论文集的提案须事前与编辑沟通,分类学论文仅在具有广泛意义时接收,数据、代码与补充材料的存储费用由期刊全额资助,存于 Dryad 与 Zenodo。
