Scope
- Disciplinary focus: the journal is a multidisciplinary title focused on the diagnosis, prevention, treatment and management of osteoporosis, publishing studies that provide broad insight into metabolic bone diseases and covering multiple populations. Its content types include original research, reviews, educational articles and case reports.
- Audience: the journal serves both ends of the field, addressing clinicians and researchers in osteoporosis while also welcoming laboratory work of direct relevance to human disease. Each year the editorial office selects articles for World Osteoporosis Day.
- Foundation backing: the journal is a joint initiative of the International Osteoporosis Foundation and the Bone Health & Osteoporosis Foundation, each nominating an Editor-in-Chief. The foundation counts 349 patient, medical and research organisations in 152 countries among its members and is the largest non-governmental organisation working on osteoporosis and related musculoskeletal diseases.
- Sister journal: Archives of Osteoporosis is not an independently run title. It is organised by the same Editors-in-Chief, Associate Editors and Editorial Board as this journal, all of its policies and procedures are those of this journal, and its manuscripts are submitted through this journal's own submission system. What distinguishes it is a regional emphasis on epidemiology, bone-density reference values and bone metabolism.
- Open access and review incentives: the journal is hybrid, and authors may publish by subscription or pay to convert to open access. The editorial office also runs a review-credit scheme under which reviewers may claim up to three category 1 continuing medical education credits per review, for at most five reviews and fifteen credits in any calendar year. [2]
History
- 1990: the journal was founded as a product of cooperation between the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the United States. Its first issue was issued under the publishing direction of John A. Kanis and Robert Lindsay, and the founding volume established the journal's focus on osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases together with its subtitle.1990年: 期刊创刊,是欧洲骨质疏松基金会与美国国家骨质疏松基金会合作办刊的产物,创刊号由 John A. Kanis 与 Robert Lindsay 两位出版负责人签发,首卷即确立了面向骨质疏松及其他代谢性骨病的定位,副题兼载其他代谢性骨病亦自创刊起沿用。
- Launch positioning: the founding statement defined the journal as a forum for communicating and exchanging current ideas on the diagnosis, prevention, treatment and management of osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases, and set out the remit of four content types: original papers reporting progress in all areas of osteoporosis, review articles summarising limited themes in which discussion has reached clear conclusions, educational articles giving information on the progress of a topic of particular interest, and case reports of uncommon or interesting presentations.
- Renaming and expansion: the American foundation was later renamed the Bone Health & Osteoporosis Foundation, and the journal now names both organisations as its sponsors accordingly. The International Osteoporosis Foundation on the European side has been a standing sponsor from the outset, and the scale of its membership has grown steadily over the more than three decades since.
- September 2026: the International Osteoporosis Foundation announced that René Rizzoli, emeritus professor of internal medicine and endocrinology at the University Hospitals of Geneva, would take over as Editor-in-Chief of the European office on 1 September 2026, succeeding John A. Kanis, who had held the post since 2008. Dr Rizzoli also becomes European Editor-in-Chief of Archives of Osteoporosis and was previously Editor-in-Chief of Calcified Tissue International, an editor of BONE and an Associate Editor of this journal.2026年9月: 国际骨质疏松基金会宣布由日内瓦大学附属医院荣休内科与内分泌科教授 René Rizzoli 自 2026 年 9 月 1 日起接替 John A. Kanis 出任欧洲分部主编,后者自 2008 年起担任该职达十八年,接任者同时也是姊妹刊 Archives of Osteoporosis 的欧洲分部主编,此前曾任 Calcified Tissue International 主编、BONE 编辑与本刊副主编。
- Recent scale: the journal remains monthly and reached volume 37 in 2026. Its impact factor was 5.4 in 2025 with a five-year impact factor of 5.5, the median time from submission to first decision is 17 days, and annual downloads exceed 2.1 million, placing it near the top of the endocrinology and metabolism category. [3]
Editors
- Two Editors-in-Chief: the journal is led by an Editor-in-Chief for the United States and one for Europe. Felicia Cosman MD, appointed by the Bone Health & Osteoporosis Foundation, leads the American office and has a long record of clinical research and public education in osteoporosis. René Rizzoli MD, appointed by the International Osteoporosis Foundation, leads the European office from September 2026.
- A board shared by the two journals: Archives of Osteoporosis shares the same Editors-in-Chief, Associate Editors and Editorial Board with this journal, and authors select between them simply by naming their intended title in the cover letter. When an editor judges after reading a manuscript that it would suit the sister journal better, the authors are offered the option of moving to Archives of Osteoporosis instead.
- Submission system: manuscripts are filed through the online Editorial Manager system, which the two journals share, as the sister title has no portal of its own. The target journal must be named in the cover letter, and all policies and procedures follow those of this journal.
- Editorial correspondence: manuscript status and referee reports are answered by the editorial office, and authors who remain dissatisfied may use the journal's appeal and complaint channels as set out in its editorial policies. Selection of editors for each side of the joint initiative is run by the respective executive committee. [4]
