Organisms Diversity & Evolution
Organisms Diversity & Evolution (commonly abbreviated as ''Org. Divers. Evol.') is the official journal of the German Society for Biological Systematics, published by Springer. Founded in 2001 and issued quarterly, it publishes on all facets of organismal diversity and evolution, with a 2025 impact factor of 1.8.Organisms Diversity & Evolution(常用缩写 Org. Divers. Evol.) [1]
Scope
- Disciplinary focus: the journal is a peer-reviewed outlet publishing on all facets of organismal diversity and evolution. It covers all groups of eukaryotic organisms and is owned by the Society for Biological Systematics, which holds the copyright and supports it together with its partner societies.
- Taxonomic coverage: associate editors are assigned by group, covering insects and nomenclature, lophotrochozoans, fungi, non-insect arthropods, non-vertebrate deuterostomes, protists and vertebrates. The scope reaches from algae and protists through plants and invertebrates to mammals, and fossil groups fall within it.
- Evidence base: priority goes to papers with a strong evolutionary or phylogenetic focus, and the journal encourages work that brings together phylogenetic, systematic, morphological, developmental and biogeographic material. Manuscripts presenting methods and tools of importance for the theoretical, methodological or philosophical foundations of the study of organismal diversity are equally welcome.
- Specimens and nomenclature: species descriptions are welcome, but only as part of a manuscript of broader interest, and the description must be integrated with evolutionary or phylogenetic discussion going beyond the taxonomic record. Designation of type material and argument at the level of the nomenclatural code are accordingly routine components of such papers.
- Open access: the journal is hybrid, and authors may publish by subscription or pay to convert to open access. It also runs an open call for special-issue proposals, each special issue having its own guest editor and submission deadline, with proposals emailed directly to the Editor-in-Chief. [2]
History
- 2001: the journal was founded as an organ promoted by the Society for Biological Systematics and its predecessor bodies. Its coverage of all groups of eukaryotic organisms was established from the outset, and it has carried the same title throughout, never having been renamed.2001年: 期刊创刊,为生物系统学学会及其前身组织推动创办的会刊,出刊之初即确立覆盖全部真核生物类群的定位,创刊时的刊名与今日完全相同,从未改名。
- 2010: from volume 10 the journal moved from Elsevier's literature platform to Springer. Only the publishing platform changed, with ownership by the society and editorial policy untouched, and the publisher has not been replaced since.2010年: 自第 10 卷起出版平台自爱思唯尔的文献平台转至 Springer,此次易手只涉及出版方,会刊的所有权与编辑方针未变,出版方此后再未更换。
- Cadence and output: the journal has appeared quarterly ever since, reaching volume 26 in 2026, with annual output in the tens of papers and some 264,000 downloads in 2025. The median time from submission to first decision is 41 days, and the journal holds a stable mid-ranking position in systematics and evolutionary biology.
- Indexing: the journal is indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded and Scopus, and also appears in the long-standing abstracting services of taxonomy and biodiversity such as the Zoological Record, Biological Abstracts and BIOSIS, so it is frequently cited in nomenclatural and catalogue literature.
- Meeting-based collections: the journal has in recent years built collections around conferences in its field. In 2026 it published a polychaete collection accompanying the fifteenth International Polychaete Conference, as well as a collection marking the sixtieth anniversary of the International Colloquium on Amphipoda, with many papers in both made open access. [3]
Editors
- Editor-in-Chief: the journal is led by Andreas Wanninger PhD, head of the evolutionary biology department and of integrative zoology at the University of Vienna. He also serves as Associate Editor for lophotrochozoans, for non-vertebrate deuterostomes and for reviews, and works on comparative developmental morphology and phylogenetics in molluscs and lophotrochozoans.
