History
- OHSU's earliest predecessor was the Willamette University School of Medicine, founded in the 1860s in Salem, the state capital, and relocated to Portland in the 1870s as the young city outstripped the smaller capital in population and hospital capacity.
- In 1915 Willamette University and the University of Oregon merged their medical programmes to form the University of Oregon Medical School, ending two decades in which the state's doctors were trained under competing private and public auspices.1915 年,威拉米特大学与俄勒冈大学把各自的医学项目合并,组建俄勒冈大学医学院,结束了此前二十年间该州医生培养分属私立与公立两套体系的状态。
- In 1919 the school moved to its present site on Marquam Hill in southwest Portland, on land donated by the Oregon-Washington Railroad and Navigation Company and by C.S. "Sam" Jackson, publisher of the Oregon Journal, after the parcel had been judged unsuitable for a rail yard.1919 年,学校迁入波特兰西南马夸姆山的现址,用地由俄勒冈—华盛顿铁路与航运公司以及《俄勒冈新闻报》发行人 C.S.“萨姆”杰克逊捐赠,此前该地块曾被判定不宜修建铁路货场。
- Over the following four decades the school diversified beyond the medical degree into nursing and dental education and added a cluster of buildings on Marquam Hill, among them the Multnomah County Hospital, the Doernbecher Children's Hospital and an outpatient clinic.
- The School of Dentistry was merged into the university in 1945, giving OHSU a dental faculty that still runs departments in endodontics, orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontics and paediatric dentistry.
- In 1955 the state senator Mark Hatfield co-sponsored a bill to extend the medical school with a teaching hospital, the legislative move that eventually detached the Portland clinical complex from the University of Oregon.1955 年,州参议员马克·哈特菲尔德联署法案,主张以一所教学医院扩展医学院,这一立法动议最终促使波特兰的临床综合体脱离俄勒冈大学。
- In 1974 the State of Oregon merged the institutions on Marquam Hill into the University Hospital, independent of the University of Oregon, and named the combined campus the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center.1974 年,俄勒冈州把马夸姆山上的各机构合并为独立于俄勒冈大学的大学医院,并将合并后的校区定名为俄勒冈大学健康科学中心。
- That centre was renamed the Oregon Health Sciences University in 1981, a title it kept for twenty years until the 2001 merger reshaped both its name and its research profile.

Reputation
- In the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities OHSU appears in the 201-300 band, the second tier of the Shanghai ranking, reflecting its strength in clinical medicine and public health rather than in broad disciplinary coverage.
- U.S. News placed OHSU 218th in its 2026-2027 global universities ranking, a position driven by clinical citations and research reputation rather than by undergraduate selectivity.《美国新闻与世界报道》在 2026 至 2027 年度全球大学排名中把该校列为第 218 位,这一位置主要由临床引用与科研声誉推动,而非本科录取难度。
- The university does not appear in the 2027 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and it likewise did not enter the 2027 QS World University Rankings, whose comprehensive table is built around multi-faculty universities.
- Its standing rests instead on professional-school rankings: fourth in primary care and first in family medicine in the 2022 U.S. News graduate school tables, with the research ranking at thirty-second.
- The physician assistant programme ranked twenty-first nationally in January 2026 and the graduate nursing programme thirty-sixth, two markers of how the university converts clinical training into national standing.
- Philanthropy has become a reputational engine: the Knight challenge produced one billion dollars for cancer research by 2015, and the two billion dollar pledge of 2025 exceeded any previous single gift to a United States university.
- The 2020 in-vivo CRISPR-Cas9 procedure at the Casey Eye Institute was reported worldwide as the first attempt to edit a gene inside a living human body for an inherited retinal disease.2020 年凯西眼科研究所实施的体内 CRISPR-Cas9 手术被全球广泛报道,被视为首次为治疗遗传性视网膜疾病而在活人体内编辑基因的尝试。
- The university's research profile is nonetheless shadowed by animal-welfare findings, including the 2020 USDA citation and nine serious violations recorded at its animal laboratory since 2014.
- OHSU's reputation is regional as much as national: it is the only MD-granting school in Oregon and the clinical referral centre for a catchment that stretches across Oregon, southwest Washington and parts of Idaho.
Student life
- OHSU has no traditional undergraduate college, so campus life is organised around professional and graduate cohorts in medicine, dentistry, nursing and the allied health programmes rather than around dormitories and Greek societies.
- Because roughly eighty-two per cent of medical students are Oregon residents, the student body mirrors the state's towns and clinics, and many graduates remain to practise in Oregon after residency.
- Clinical students rotate through OHSU Hospital, Doernbecher Children's Hospital, the adjacent veterans hospital and Shriners Hospital, so a single training week can span four very different patient populations.
- The Portland Aerial Tram doubles as a student commute, carrying trainees between the South Waterfront teaching buildings and the hospitals on Marquam Hill in about three minutes.
- Marquam Nature Park and the trails of Marquam Hill begin at the edge of the campus, giving students in a dense clinical environment immediate access to forest walks above the city.
- The campus sits just south of downtown Portland, so students can reach the city's restaurants, music venues and riverfront paths without the self-contained campus culture common at residential universities.
- Interprofessional mixing is built into the timetable: dental, medical, nursing, physician assistant and pharmacy students share the Collaborative Life Sciences Building and its simulation and anatomy facilities.
- Financial support for trainees runs through the OHSU Foundation, which raises scholarships and programme funds and merged with the Doernbecher Children's Hospital Foundation in 2021.
