Obesity Surgery

Obesity Surgery (commonly abbreviated as ''Obes. Surg.' and subtitled the journal of metabolic surgery and allied care) is an international academic journal in the field of bariatric and metabolic surgery published by Springer. It was launched in March 1991 and is issued monthly, and it is the official journal of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders and of the British Obesity & Metabolic Surgery Society, with a 2025 impact factor of 3.4.Obesity Surgery（常用缩写 Obes. Scope

• Disciplinary focus: the journal presents itself as a premier interdisciplinary and international forum for disseminating research and clinical knowledge on all aspects of bariatric and metabolic surgery. It welcomes papers from all disciplines involved in the surgical treatment and care of patients suffering from severe obesity and seeks to raise awareness of obesity and its associated comorbidities while decreasing the stigma attached to it.学科定位： 期刊定位为减重与代谢外科领域跨学科的国际学术论坛，用于传播该领域各层面的研究与临床知识，欢迎所有参与重度肥胖患者手术治疗与照护的学科投稿，并以提升公众对肥胖及其合并疾病的认识、减少对肥胖的污名化为办刊目标之一。

History

• March 1991: the journal was launched, with Mervyn Deitel MD of Canada and George S. M. Cowan MD of the United States as founding Co-Editors-in-Chief. The founding vision came from their judgement that bariatric surgery lacked a dedicated scholarly journal, and the first issues were taken on by a small British publishing house.1991年3月： 期刊创刊，由加拿大的 Mervyn Deitel 医生与美国的 George S. • Changes of publisher: the original publisher later became International Thomson Publications, which sold the journal on to Lippincott, but the title fell into financial difficulty and in 1998 was taken over by a communications company named after its founding editor. • Society affiliation: the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders was founded in 1995 at an international obesity surgery meeting in Stockholm, Sweden, and has since hosted an annual World Congress and issued guidelines and position statements. • 2004 to 2006: the journal reached an impact factor of 3.726 and ranked seventh among 139 surgical journals worldwide. • Editor-in-Chief: the journal is led by Scott Shikora MD, FACS, who is professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School and director of the centre for metabolic and bariatric surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He graduated from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and has been president and an executive council member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, with clinical and research interests in minimally invasive bariatric and general surgery, neuromodulation and new surgical technologies.
