History
- 27 October 2015: the journal was founded by the quantum physicist Professor Michelle Simmons of the University of New South Wales, who also became its first editor-in-chief.2015年10月27日: 期刊创刊,由澳大利亚新南威尔士大学的量子物理学家 Michelle Simmons 创办并出任首任主编。
- Background to the founding: the journal was launched at a moment when quantum information science was turning from a marginal branch of fundamental physics into a field in its own right with broad applications. The University of New South Wales had by then assembled a complete research group in the area together with the necessary technical infrastructure, and Simmons founded the journal on the strength of that.
- Relation to the mother journal: as one of the npj titles in the Nature Publishing Group, the journal publishes quantum information research of moderate length for a broad readership, dividing its role from the more specialist titles in the same family.
- Open access from the outset: the journal adopted a fully open access model at its launch rather than converting to one later. The arrangement allows readers to reach every article without any subscription.
- Change of editorship: the founding editor-in-chief stepped down and the journal passed to two editors-in-chief, Sven Rogge at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and Dan Browne at University College London in the United Kingdom.
- Continuous publication: the journal publishes continuously. Articles are gathered into annual volumes and numbered in order of appearance, without division into monthly issues.
- Recent years: the impact factor has risen from about 4 at the journal's launch to 9 in 2025. Holding the first quartile in Quantum Science and Technology throughout, it has become one of the most influential open access titles in that direction. [3]
Editors
- Editors-in-chief: the journal has two editors-in-chief. Sven Rogge is Professor of Quantum Physics at the University of Copenhagen, working at the Niels Bohr Institute, where his research concentrates on coherent control of quantum devices and on quantum computing hardware. Dan Browne is Professor of Physics at University College London, whose work spans quantum information theory and quantum many-body physics and includes foundational contributions to quantum algorithms and quantum metrology. The two editors come from the theoretical and the experimental sides respectively, a pairing that matches the journal's declared symmetry between theory and experiment and that carries on the tradition of an experimental physicist as editor-in-chief established at the founding.
- Composition of the board: board members come from a number of countries and cover quantum optics, solid-state devices, atomic and molecular physics, cold atoms, quantum information theory and superconducting circuits. The size follows the standard for the npj family.
- Submission system: manuscripts are lodged through the Nature submission system. The median time from submission to first decision is twenty days and the median from submission to acceptance is one hundred and ninety-three days, and the editors also publish average durations for each stage from submission to online publication.
- Pre-submission enquiry required: the editors ask authors to send a brief note of two or three sentences before submitting, describing the substance of the manuscript and why it fits the journal. Submissions that have not first been enquired about are returned.
- Transparency of review: the journal operates an open peer-review policy. Authors may nominate or exclude referees, and the editors publish in full the reports for every article, including the names and affiliations of the referees. [4]
