Northwestern Polytechnical University

Northwestern Polytechnical University (NWPU), known in Chinese as Xi Gong Da, is a public science and engineering university in the city of Xi'an in Shaanxi Province, China, affiliated with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and built around aeronautics, astronautics and marine engineering.西北工业大学（简称西工大）是一所位于中国陕西省西安市的公立理工科大学，隶属于中华人民共和国工业和信息化部，以航空、航天、航海「三航」领域的人才培养与科学研究为鲜明特色。

Its main lineage began in 1938 as the National Northwestern Engineering Institute, and after merging with the Xi'an Aeronautics Institute it took the name Northwestern Polytechnical University in 1957, becoming a Class A Double First-Class university that entered Project 211 in 1995 and Project 985 in 2001.学校的主干脉络始于 1938 年组建的国立西北工学院；1957 年与西安航空学院合并后定名为西北工业大学，现为国家「双一流」建设高校（A类），并于 1995 年首批进入「211工程」、2001 年进入「985工程」。

History

• In 1938, as the Japanese invasion pushed universities out of eastern China, the National Beiyang Engineering Institute, the Engineering School of Beiping University, the Engineering School of National Northeastern University and the private Jiaozuo Engineering Institute were combined in Hanzhong, Shaanxi, to form the National Northwestern Engineering Institute.1938 年，因日本侵华迫使东部高校内迁，国立北洋工学院、国立北平大学工学院、国立东北大学工学院与私立焦作工学院在陕西汉中合并，组建国立西北工学院。

• After the surrender of Japan the institute was moved to Xianyang in 1946, and in 1950 it was renamed the Northwestern Engineering Institute as the higher education system of the new republic took shape.1946 年抗战胜利后，学院迁往咸阳；1950 年，随着新中国高等教育体系逐步建立，学院更名为西北工学院。

• A second lineage began in 1952 in Nanjing, when the aeronautical engineering departments of Jiaotong University, Zhejiang University and Nanjing University were brought together to create the East China Aeronautics Institute.第二条脉络始于 1952 年的南京，交通大学、浙江大学与南京大学的航空工程系在此合并，组建华东航空学院。

• In 1956 the East China Aeronautics Institute relocated inland to Xi'an and was renamed the Xi'an Aeronautics Institute, reflecting the policy of moving strategic education away from the vulnerable coast.1956 年，华东航空学院整体内迁西安并更名为西安航空学院，这体现了当时把战略性教育资源从沿海向内地转移的方针。

• On the foundation of these two predecessors, the Northwestern Engineering Institute and the Xi'an Aeronautics Institute merged in 1957 to form Northwestern Polytechnical University.在这两个前身的基础上，西北工学院与西安航空学院于 1957 年合并，正式组建西北工业大学。

• In 1970, as relations with the Soviet Union deteriorated, the Air Force Engineering Department of the People's Liberation Army Military Engineering Institute was moved from Harbin to Xi'an and merged into the university, giving it a third lineage.1970 年，因中苏关系恶化，中国人民解放军军事工程学院（哈军工）空军工程系整体从哈尔滨迁入西安并入学校，成为其第三支脉源。

• On 29 June 2018 the university signed an agreement with the Taicang municipal government of Jiangsu Province to build a campus in the Loujiang New Town of Taicang.2018 年 6 月 29 日，学校与江苏省太仓市人民政府签约，在太仓娄江新城建设校区。

• Construction of that campus began on 28 August 2019, its first phase was completed in July 2021 and teaching started there in September 2021.太仓校区于 2019 年 8 月 28 日动工建设，一期工程 2021 年 7 月竣工，2021 年 9 月正式投用并开展教学。

• On 18 March 2020, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the university's independent Mingde College was spun off and reorganised as Xi'an Mingde Institute of Technology.2020 年 3 月 18 日，经教育部批准，学校举办的独立学院明德学院脱离母体，转设为西安明德理工学院。

• In May 2023 the university agreed with Kazakh National University to open a branch campus in Kazakhstan for 60 master's students in new materials, computing and communications.2023 年 5 月，学校与哈萨克斯坦国立大学合作共建哈萨克斯坦分校，首批招收新材料、计算机与通讯专业硕士研究生 60 名。

• The Kazakhstan branch campus was formally opened in Almaty on 12 October 2023, becoming the university's first campus outside China.2023 年 10 月 12 日，哈萨克斯坦分校在阿拉木图正式启用，成为学校首个海外校区。

• On 4 July 2022 a flight vehicle named Feitian-1, developed by the university's aerospace combined-cycle propulsion team, completed a successful test flight at a base in north-west China.2022 年 7 月 4 日，由学校航天学院空天组合动力创新团队牵头研制的「飞天一号」飞行器在中国西北某基地成功试飞。

• In June 2022 staff and students received phishing emails carrying malware, and in September 2022 Chinese agencies attributed the intrusion to an office of the United States National Security Agency.2022 年 6 月，学校师生收到携带木马程序的钓鱼邮件；同年 9 月，中国相关机构指认此次入侵由美国国家安全局下属机构实施。

• In July 2024 a signed article set out the goal of running the university's Kazakhstan branch campus well and training more successors for China-Kazakhstan friendship.2024 年 7 月，一篇署名文章提出要共同办好西北工业大学哈萨克斯坦分校，培养更多中哈友好事业接班人。

Academics

• The university is organised into 24 professional schools covering aeronautics, astronautics, marine science and technology, artificial intelligence and related fields.学校设有航空、航天、航海、人工智能等 24 个专业学院，覆盖三航及相关领域。

• The Xi'an campuses cover about 4,700 mu of land, with the Youyi Campus of about 0.8 square kilometres in Beilin District and the Chang'an Campus of about 2.6 square kilometres in Chang'an District.学校在西安的两个校区占地共约 4,700 亩，其中碑林区的友谊校区约 0.8 平方公里，长安区的长安校区约 2.6 平方公里。

• The Youyi Campus, known as the old campus, is divided into southern, western and northern sections by West Youyi Road and South Laodong Road.友谊校区被称为老校区，由西友谊路与南劳动路划分为南、西、北三个部分。

• Wu Yi, who studied at the university, served as Vice Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China.曾在学校求学的吴仪，曾任中华人民共和国国务院副总理。

• Hao Peng, a graduate, is secretary of the Party Committee of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission and a former governor of Qinghai Province.学校毕业生郝鹏现任国务院国有资产监督管理委员会党委书记，并曾任青海省省长。

• Zhang Qingwei, another alumnus, is secretary of the Communist Party Committee of Heilongjiang Province and a former governor of Hebei Province.同为校友的张庆伟现任中共黑龙江省委书记，并曾任河北省省长。
