New Phytologist
New Phytologist (commonly abbreviated as ''New Phytol.') is a peer-reviewed academic journal owned by the New Phytologist Foundation and published on its behalf by Wiley, issued twenty-four times a year. One of the longest established and most broadly cited general journals in plant science, it publishes original research ranging from intracellular processes to global environmental change.《新植物学家》(New Phytologist',常用缩写为 New Phytol.''''')
Scope
The journal treats plant science problems as objects of study in their own right, and expects a paper to carry a generalizable mechanistic claim within botany rather than one confined to a particular species and set of conditions. The foundation groups its research into five sections: physiology and development, environment, interaction, evolution, and transformative plant biotechnology.
- Physiology and development: plant hormones and signal transduction, photosynthesis and carbon metabolism, cell and organ development, and polarity and growth regulation.
- Environment: light and water stress, salinity and heavy-metal tolerance, rhizosphere and soil interactions, and the effects of global change on plants.
- Interaction: relations among plants, pathogens and pollinators, symbiosis and mycorrhizae, nodules and nitrogen fixation, and interactions between plants and herbivores.
- Evolution: speciation and phylogeny, morphological evolution across plant lineages, and palaeobotany and the fossil record.
- Genes and genomes: plant genome structure and function, gene regulatory networks, epigenetic variation, and applications of gene editing and synthetic biology.
- Transformative plant biotechnology: crop improvement and molecular breeding, plant biorefining and industrial uses, and the molecular basis of biotic stress tolerance.
The journal publishes original research articles alongside reviews and editorials, and runs special issues and columns, within which the Tansley Review series is kept free to read by funding from the foundation. The publisher discloses an acceptance rate and a time to first decision for this title on its official metrics page. [2]
History
- Founding context (1902): the first issue appeared in January 1902, founded by Sir Arthur G. Tansley, then aged thirty and an assistant lecturer at University College London. He raised £130 of his own to start it, the journal was printed by a cheap printer off Tottenham Court Road in London, and the first-year subscription was ten shillings for ten issues创刊背景(1902年): 本刊于 1902 年 1 月出版创刊号,创办者是当时三十岁、任教于伦敦大学学院的阿瑟·坦斯利爵士。 within two years it was self-supporting and the investment repaid. The title it replaced was the British Botanical Journal.[3]
- Origin of the name: the title was taken from The Phytologist, a magazine-style periodical published between 1842 and 1863, but the foundation records explicitly that this was a separate publication that supplied a more memorable name rather than a predecessor of this journal. The title has never been changed since founding. [3]
- Internationalization and the formation of a school (1911–1917): in 1911 Tansley organized the first International Phytogeographic Excursion, and the journal became the vehicle of that international network国际化与学派形成(1911—1917年): 1911 年坦斯利组织了第一次国际植物地理考察,本刊随之成为该国际网络的载体;1917 年他促成发表那份主张重建植物学基础教学的文件,即后世所称的坦斯利宣言,确立了本刊在植物学界的方法论地位。 in 1917 he secured publication of the document calling for the reconstruction of elementary botanical teaching, known since as the Tansley Manifesto, which fixed the journal's methodological standing in botany. At the end of 1931 Tansley handed over the editorship to Roy Clapham, Harry Godwin and Will James.[3]
- Publisher and ownership: the journal is owned by the non-profit New Phytologist Foundation. It was published by an academic press in its earlier years, and from 2005 by the foundation itself as publishing body, with Wiley handling publication and printing. As a title owned by a non-profit body, its author charges differ from those of a commercial publisher. [4]
- Cadence and format: the journal moved from monthly to sixteen issues a year in 2006, and later to twenty-four issues a year. Print issues ceased after volume 192, number 4, in December 2011, and publication became online-only from January 2012, after 110 years of appearing in print as well. [5]
- Metric standing: the publisher's official metrics page reports a 2025 impact factor of 8.7, a 2025 Scopus CiteScore of 16.1 and a Journal Citation Indicator of 2.01, together with an acceptance rate of 21%, a median of 17 days from submission to first decision, 94 days from submission to acceptance and 25 days from acceptance to publication. [2]
Editors
The journal is edited by an editor-in-chief with deputy editors covering the separate sections and an international editorial advisory board in support. Manuscripts are submitted through the publisher's online system, with editorial judgement and publishing execution shared between the foundation and the publisher. Because the title is foundation-owned, the editor-in-chief post carries unusual weight in botany, and its holders have traditionally come from British research institutions, a pattern first broken in 2025. [6]
- Maarja Öpik (editor-in-chief since January 2025): professor of molecular ecology at the University of Tartu and director of its Institute of Ecology and Earth Sciences. She took office in January 2025 for an initial term of five years, having joined the journal's editorial board in 2013. She is both the first woman and the first editor-in-chief from outside Britain to hold the post, and her appointment was announced in the journal itself as a published paper. [7]
- Alistair M. Hetherington (predecessor): left the post at the end of 2024 after twelve years, a tenure that covered the journal's decisive expansion from traditional plant physiology towards molecular ecology and evolutionary genomics. [8]
- Founding editor: Arthur Tansley edited the journal from its founding in 1902 until 1931, and ranks among the most consequential editors in botany创刊主编: 阿瑟·坦斯利自 1902 年创刊起主编本刊至 1931 年,是植物学界影响最深远的编辑之一;他同时也是英国生态学与植物群落学的奠基性人物,本刊在创刊后的头三十年里实质上就是他个人的学术平台。 he was also a foundational figure in British ecology and plant community science, and for the journal's first three decades it was in effect his own academic platform.[3]
- Standing in the field: the journal ranks eleventh of 265 worldwide in plant science in the Journal Citation Reports and is among the ten most cited titles in its field in the Scopus database学科地位: 本刊在期刊引证报告的植物科学类中列全球第十一位,在斯科普斯数据库中同属该领域引用量前十的刊物,其综述系列与专刊常被后续研究作为领域坐标引用。 its review series and special issues are regularly cited as field coordinates by later research.[8]
