Neurosurgical Focus
Neurosurgical Focus is an online-only monthly journal of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons that takes one topic in neurosurgery and treats it in depth in each issue. It appeared first in July 1996 and has been free to read since it began, and its 2025 impact factor is 3.3.《神经外科焦点》是美国神经外科医师协会的纯电子月刊,每期选取神经外科的一个主题作深入处理。
Scope
- The journal covers a different topic in neurosurgery in depth every month, so that each issue reads as a single study of one subject.
- Each peer-reviewed issue is presented as a state-of-the-art textbook chapter in the field, which sets a high bar for the selection of the material inside it.
- Colour images and video clips enhance the articles, and the visual record of an operation is treated as part of the scientific content rather than as an illustration.
- The journal has been open access since it began, and it has always been free to the public.
- Continuing medical education credit may be claimed for its articles, free of charge for members of the association.
- The journal is described as a preview forum for selected articles that will appear in the Journal of Neurosurgery, so the two titles work in step.
- Topics are gathered by guest editors who commission a set of papers and write an introduction that frames the state of the question.
- Because a whole issue is built around one subject, a reader can follow a single clinical problem from technique through to outcome in one sitting.
- Issues have taken up subjects such as the surgical management of high-grade gliomas, artificial intelligence in neurosurgical care and the complications of spine surgery.
- A single-article special issue may also appear, in which several cases of the same kind are set side by side with the lessons drawn from them.
- The journal publishes original works in neurosurgery, and it takes in studies from clinical neurophysiology, neurology, radiology, pathology and molecular biology where they bear on surgical practice.
- Each issue opens with an introduction from its guest editors, so a reader is told what the issue sets out to answer before the papers begin.
- The journal takes articles that report both on technique and on outcome, which keeps a clinical readership in view throughout.
- Video material is submitted with many papers and is published alongside the text, so that an operation can be watched as well as read about.
- Because each issue stands on its own, the journal is used as a teaching resource in training programmes as well as a record of current practice.
- Subscriptions are not required of readers, and the association instead recovers the cost of the title through its publishing programme.

- Anniversary issues have looked back at the state of the specialty while still carrying new work, so the journal keeps a record of its own field as well as adding to it.
