Neuropsychopharmacology Reports
Neuropsychopharmacology Reports is the open access English journal of the Japanese Society of Neuropsychopharmacology, issued by Wiley and given over to the pharmacology of the central nervous system.《神经精神药理学报告》是日本神经精神药理学会的英文开放获取会刊,由 Wiley 出版,内容集中在中枢神经系统药理学。
Its pages move between bench and clinic, so one issue can hold a receptor binding experiment, a randomised trial of an antidepressant and a study of plasma concentrations in everyday practice.
The first volume was numbered 38 and carried the year 2018, a sign that the society kept the count of an earlier series instead of opening at volume one.
In the 2025 Journal Citation Reports the impact factor stands at 1.9, the five-year value at 2.0, and every article is free to read from the day it appears online.2025 年期刊引证报告中,影响因子为 1.9,五年影响因子为 2.0,每篇文章自上线之日起即可免费阅读。
Scope
- The remit covers how psychoactive drugs act on the brain and how behaviour changes in response, a question the journal follows from molecular pharmacology through to the consulting room.
- Receptor pharmacology sits near the centre, with work on dopamine, serotonin, glutamate and GABA systems, on transporters and on the second messengers that carry a drug signal inward.
- Animal work takes a large share, from rodent models of depression and psychosis to behavioural readouts such as forced swim, prepulse inhibition and social interaction, always with attention to model validity.
- Human psychopharmacology appears through challenge studies, in which a single dose of a drug is given to volunteers or patients and the ensuing mood, cognition or endocrine response is measured.
- Clinical trials form another pillar, covering antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilisers and augmentation strategies, with attention to response rates, remission and the functional outcome that patients notice in ordinary life.
- Pharmacogenetics has a firm place, since variants in CYP2D6 and CYP2C19 alter plasma levels of many psychotropics, and genotype guided dosing is examined against measured concentrations and clinical response.
- Therapeutic drug monitoring belongs to the same conversation, and reports on assay methods, sampling timing and reference ranges for antipsychotics, antidepressants and mood stabilisers are within scope.
- Neuroimaging enters through receptor occupancy studies, resting state connectivity and task based functional MRI, while PET work with radioligands links a dose to the fraction of receptors it occupies.
- Electrophysiology runs alongside it, with resting EEG, event related potentials, mismatch negativity and sleep recordings used to test whether a compound reaches its target in the living brain.
- Addiction and substance use occupy steady space, from the neurobiology of craving and relapse to trials of substitution treatment for alcohol, nicotine and opioid dependence, and to their long term outcomes.
- Mood disorders and schizophrenia carry much of the clinical load, with papers on the mechanism of action of lithium, on treatment resistant depression and on the metabolic cost of long term antipsychotic use.
- Anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder and trauma related conditions appear regularly, often through work on serotonergic agents, on augmentation with glutamatergic drugs and on the timing of response.
- Safety work is treated as science rather than paperwork, and reports on extrapyramidal symptoms, metabolic disturbance, QT prolongation, hyponatraemia and drug interactions are welcome wherever the data are sound.
- Reviews, systematic reviews and meta analyses give the field its summaries, and short Brief Reports give preliminary findings or single case observations a route into print without a full length manuscript.
History
- The journal opened in 2018 as the society's English language organ, with Wiley handling publication from the first issue and the society holding editorial responsibility for the title.
- Numbering began at volume 38 rather than volume one, and the sequence has run without a break since, so volume 44 belongs to 2024 and volume 46 to 2026, one volume for each calendar year.
- Volume 38 carried four issues, and each of them held between eight and eleven papers, a modest start that still put the whole first year into the indexing services.
- Four issues a year has remained the pattern since launch, and the grid runs from issue one to issue four in every volume, the current one included.
- Only an electronic number was registered, 2574-173X, and Crossref records the same value for print and online, which marks the title as an online only publication with no separate print run.
- MEDLINE took the title from volume 38 issue 1 of March 2018, the first issue it ever published, and PubMed and PubMed Central have carried the full text since then.MEDLINE
- Every article is free at the point of reading, gold open access stands at 100 percent in the 2025 release, and authors meet an article processing charge instead of a subscription barrier.
- The title sits in the Emerging Sources Citation Index rather than the flagship Science Citation Index Expanded, a placing that still brings a Journal Impact Factor and three subject rankings each year.
- Neurosciences is the hardest of the three categories, and there the journal holds 266th place among 330 titles, a fourth quartile position in the 2025 release, while its two other categories sit a step higher.
- Pharmacology and pharmacy places it 253rd of 356, psychiatry 187th of 293, both in the third quartile, so the clinical readership is served by a title that ranks in the middle of its field.
- Impact factors have moved within a narrow band, 2.0 in 2023, 1.5 in 2024 and 1.9 in 2025, while the five-year figure of 2.0 suggests a steadier citation base than the annual number implies.
- Citations total 1,033 a year, output runs near 75 papers, the cited half-life is 3.6 years and the Journal Citation Indicator reaches 0.44, all of it consistent with a young and fast moving field.
- Crossref lists 736 registered DOIs for the title, from 44 papers in its first year to 105 in 2025, a curve that follows the widening of the journal's remit across basic and clinical work.
Editors
- Editorial authority rests with the society and production with the publisher, an arrangement that leaves scientific direction in Japanese hands while Wiley runs hosting, copy editing and distribution.
- Manuscripts arrive through the publisher's online submission system, the same route used across the Wiley list, and authors track review status from a personal dashboard once the file is complete.
- A submission is first read for fit, and papers that lie outside neuropsychopharmacology or ignore the length rules are returned before any referee is approached, which keeps the queue short for the rest.
- Referees from outside the editorial board then report on methods, statistics and claims, and a revision is expected before any decision, with further rounds where the reports conflict.
- Decisions rest with the handling editor, who weighs the reports against the journal's readership, and the reasoning is passed back in the decision letter rather than left implicit.
- Brief Reports give short studies a separate track, useful for replication attempts, negative findings and small case series that would be stretched by a full article format.
- Full articles carry the usual apparatus, an introduction that states the question, methods with drug doses and statistical models, results and a discussion that admits the limits of the design.
- Reviewers of review articles look for a stated search strategy, explicit inclusion criteria and a synthesis that separates what the trials show from what the authors hope.
- Trial reports must carry a registration number and a statement of ethics approval, animal work needs a committee reference, and human studies need consent procedures spelled out in the methods.
- Funding and competing interests are declared for every author, and the funder information supplied at acceptance is registered with Crossref so that readers can trace it later.
- Similarity checking runs on every submission before review, a step the publisher deposits openly in the Crossref record, so text overlap is caught at the desk rather than after publication.
- Corrections, retractions and version updates follow a published policy that is also lodged with Crossref, which keeps the record of a changed paper visible to anyone who cites it.
