Scope
- Disciplinary focus: the journal aims to be the premier source of reviews and commentaries for the scientific communities it serves. Articles are meant to be authoritative and accessible, enhanced with clearly understandable figures, tables and other display items, and the editorial team works hard to maximize the usefulness and impact of every article.
- Subjects covered: the scope spans all areas concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the kidney in adults and children, including hypertension, infection, inflammation, dialysis, chronic uraemia, renal failure, transplantation, applied physiology, epidemiology, pathology, immunology, cancer and genetics.
- Content types: the journal publishes Research Highlights, News & Views, Comments, Reviews, Perspectives and Consensus Statements for nephrologists and basic science researchers, together with educational Case Studies that help readers carry the evidence into concrete diagnostic and therapeutic situations.
- Audience: as the volume of original clinical research continues to grow, it has become increasingly difficult to keep up to date while still devoting substantial time to patient care. The journal addresses busy clinicians and researchers by offering timely authoritative interpretations of key research developments that translate the latest findings into clinical practice.
- Commissioned model and open access: articles can only be published using the subscription route, and the publisher offers no immediate gold open access option and charges no publication fee. Reviews and Perspectives are written by external authors invited or commissioned by the in-house editors, authors may submit proposals for Review-type and Comment-type articles through the online submission system, and the great majority of published content is commissioned.
History
- November 2005: Nature Publishing Group and the International Society of Nephrology jointly launched Nature Clinical Practice Nephrology for readers interested in clinical kidney disease and hypertension, with Robert W. Schrier as founding Editor-in-Chief. An advisory board was assembled at the same time, bringing expertise across acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, diabetic and metabolic disorders, hypertension, dialysis, transplantation, hereditary kidney disease, paediatric nephrology, and fluid, acid-base and electrolyte disorders.2005年11月: 自然出版集团与国际肾脏病学会共同创刊 Nature Clinical Practice Nephrology,面向对临床肾病与高血压有兴趣的读者,创刊主编为 Robert W. Schrier,并同时组建了一支汇集急性肾损伤、慢性肾病、糖尿病与代谢病、高血压、透析、移植、遗传性肾病、儿科肾脏病以及体液酸碱与电解质紊乱专长的顾问委员会。
- Society affiliation: the journal has been an official journal of the International Society of Nephrology from the outset, and society members enjoy free online access. The society's own achievements, such as its lobbying that led the United Nations to recognize chronic kidney disease as an important noncommunicable disease in its own right, have likewise been recorded and supported in these pages.
- April 2009: the publisher rebranded eight clinical journals under the Nature Reviews name, and this title became Nature Reviews Nephrology to align more closely with the life-science Nature Reviews journals. The changes included better figures and full-colour printing, Research Highlights supplemented by brief vignettes of recent advances, the former practice points section recast as News & Views, and an increase in the number of clinical Reviews written by international experts.2009年4月: 出版方把八本临床类刊物统一改冠 Nature Reviews 品牌,本刊自此定名为 Nature Reviews Nephrology,以更贴近自然出版集团生命科学评论系列的整体面貌;改版内容包括提升插图质量与改为全彩印刷,研究亮点栏目新增了简短的进展短评,原有的诊疗要点栏目改为新闻与观点,国际专家撰写的临床综述数量也相应增加。
- Editorial continuity: after completing his five-year founding term, Robert W. Schrier was succeeded by Susan Allison. The journal has retained an external advisory board alongside the in-house team of full-time editors employed by Nature Publishing Group.

The impact factor peaked at 42.439 in 2021 and stood at 46.7 in 2025, keeping the journal among the most highly ranked titles in urology and nephrology. [2]
