National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University

National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, abbreviated NYCU, is a public research university with campuses in Hsinchu and Taipei, China Taiwan, established on 1 February 2021 through the merger of National Yang-Ming University and National Chiao Tung University.国立阳明交通大学（简称 NYCU）是一所公立研究型大学，校区分布于中国台湾新竹与台北，2021 年 2 月 1 日由国立阳明大学与国立交通大学合并成立。

Combining a medical tradition founded in 1975 with an engineering tradition tracing to 1896, it runs nineteen colleges and an affiliated hospital, enrols 20,249 students as of 2024, and is placed equal 177th in the 2027 QS World University Rankings.学校融 1975 年创立的医学传统与溯至 1896 年的工学传统于一体，设 19 个学院与一所附属医院，2024 年在校学生 20,249 人，在 2027 年 QS 世界大学排名中并列第 177。

History

• The older root of the university is National Chiao Tung University, founded in 1896 in Shanghai as the Nanyang Public School by the Qing official Sheng Xuanhuai, and together with Beiyang University it was the earliest institution of higher learning founded by Chinese hands.学校较早的源头是国立交通大学，1896 年由清末官员盛宣怀在上海创办南洋公学，与北洋大学同为中国人自办的最早高等教育机构。

• The school was renamed the Imperial Polytechnic College of the Board of Commerce in 1905, became Nanyang University in 1911, and in 1912 was reorganised as the Shanghai Industrial College of the Ministry of Communications, earning the nickname of the MIT of the Orient.该校 1905 年改称商部高等实业学堂，1911 年改名南洋大学，1912 年改组为交通部上海工业专门学校，有「东方 MIT」之称。

• In 1921 the technical colleges of the Beiyang government were consolidated and the Shanghai campus became part of Chiao Tung University, which moved to Chongqing after the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937.1921 年北洋政府整合全国技术院校，上海校区并入交通大学；1937 年抗日战争爆发后学校内迁重庆。

• After 1949 the institution on the mainland was divided into Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Xi'an Jiao Tong University, and in 1958 the Institute of Electronics was re-established in Hsinchu, giving Taiwan its own Chiao Tung University.1949 年以后大陆的交通大学分为上海交通大学与西安交通大学；1958 年，交通大学在新竹复校并设立电子研究所，形成台湾本地的交通大学。

• The medical root is National Yang-Ming University, founded in 1975 as the Yang-Ming Medical College in Beitou, Taipei, with the assistance of Taipei Veterans General Hospital and at the request of the defence authorities of the time, and it was the first national medical college established in postwar Taiwan.医学源头则是 1975 年成立于台北北投的阳明医学院，由台北荣民总医院协助、并应当时防务当局之请设立，是战后台湾第一所国立医学院。

• The college was reorganised into the comprehensive National Yang-Ming University in 1994, by which time it had become a leading centre of medical education and biomedical research.该院 1994 年改组为综合性的国立阳明大学，此时它已成为台湾医学教育与生物医学研究的重镇。

• In September 2015 the two universities reopened merger working-group meetings, confirmed the new name, and in December 2015 both the Yang-Ming development council and the Chiao Tung university council approved a merger memorandum.2015 年 9 月两校重启合校工作小组会议，再次确认新校名；同年 12 月，阳明校务发展委员会与交通大学务会议先后通过合校备忘录。

• Yang-Ming's failure to enter the Global Taiwan programme of the Ministry of Education in 2018, whose assessors cited its small scale and narrow medical focus, pushed its council to vote on 26 September 2018 to resume merger discussions.2018 年阳明大学未入选教育部高等教育深耕计划全球链接全校型名单，评审意见指其规模偏小、过度集中生医；同年 9 月 26 日阳明校务会议决议重启合校讨论。

• Both Chiao Tung and Tsing Hua competed for the partnership, and after Chiao Tung passed its unilateral letter of intent on 28 November 2018, Yang-Ming voted on 26 December 2018 to give priority to Chiao Tung.交通大学与清华大学均表态争取；2018 年 11 月 28 日交通大学临时校务会议通过单方合校意向书，阳明大学随即于同年 12 月 26 日表决确定以交通大学为优先合校对象。

• Both university councils approved the letter of intent in late March 2019, and on 18 September 2019 they approved the merger plan itself, by votes of 65 to 20 at Yang-Ming and 59 to 15 at Chiao Tung.2019 年 3 月下旬两校校务会议先后通过合校意向书；同年 9 月 18 日通过合校计划书，阳明端 65 票赞成对 20 票反对，交大端 59 票赞成对 15 票反对。

• The Ministry of Education completed its review on 24 June 2020, and on 12 August 2020 the two universities announced that they would merge on 1 February 2021, on a merger budget of 9.5 billion New Taiwan dollars, of which 6.5 billion was to be self-raised.教育部 2020 年 6 月 24 日完成合校计划书审议，同年 8 月 12 日两校宣布自 2021 年 2 月 1 日合校，合并预算 95 亿元新台币，其中 65 亿元自筹。

• Of that budget the ministry approved 400 million New Taiwan dollars for basic facilities, while 2.6 billion New Taiwan dollars for new buildings, including a smart health building on the Yangming campus, remained subject to further approval.该预算中教育部核准 4 亿元新台币基本设施补助，而含阳明校区智慧健康大楼在内的 26 亿元新建馆舍经费仍需循公共工程程序另行申请。

• Lin Chi-Hung was selected as the first president on 10 January 2021, and the university address was settled by lot in favour of the Guangfu campus in Hsinchu.2021 年 1 月 10 日遴选委员会选定林奇宏为首任校长，校址则经抽签定于新竹光复校区。

• The Ministry of Education approved a department of Chinese medicine on 31 August 2023, the university's fourth application, and the first students enrolled in 2024, making it the first national university in Taiwan to teach Chinese medicine.2023 年 8 月 31 日教育部核准设立中医学系，为该校第四次申请，2024 年招收首批学生，使其成为中国台湾首所设立中医学系的国立大学。

• The university is organised into nineteen colleges, among them the colleges of Science, Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Management, Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Life Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biomedical Science and Engineering, Photonics, Law, Hakka Studies, Semiconductor Technology and a college of humanities, arts and social sciences.学校设 19 个学院，包括理、工、电机与计算机、信息、人工智能、管理、医、牙医、护理、生命科学、药学、生物医学工程、光电、科技法律、客家文化、半导体技术等学院以及人文艺术与社会学院。

• The university defines its spirit as devotion, pragmatism, unity and illumination, inheriting the motto of Yang-Ming, benevolent mind and art with knowledge put into practice, and the 1974 motto of Chiao Tung, absorbing the new to look far ahead and working pragmatically, written in calligraphy by the former president Ling Hong-Hsun.学校将自身精神定为奉献、务实、团结与照亮，承阳明校训「仁心仁术、真知力行」与交通大学 1974 年校训「知新致远、崇实笃行」，后者由前校长凌鸿勋亲笔题写。

Notable people

• The founding figure of the older line is Sheng Xuanhuai, the Qing dynasty official who established the Nanyang Public School in Shanghai in 1896 and is counted among the founders of modern Chinese higher education.工学一系的创始人物为清末官员盛宣怀，他于 1896 年在上海创办南洋公学，被视为中国近代高等教育的奠基者之一。
