National Chung Cheng University

National Chung Cheng University, usually abbreviated as CCU, is a national research-oriented comprehensive university in Minxiong Township, Chiayi County, in the south of Taiwan, and a member of the Taiwan Comprehensive University System.國立中正大學（簡稱中正大學、中正、CCU）是一所位於臺灣南部嘉義縣民雄鄉的國立研究型綜合大學，校地清幽、學風自由，是臺灣綜合大學系統的成員校之一，長期以人文社會與科學技術並重為辦學理想。

It was founded on 1 July 1989 and was the first public university created in Taiwan after the economic boom of the 1980s, set up to develop higher education across the Yunlin, Chiayi and Tainan region.該校於1989年7月1日正式創立，是臺灣1980年代經濟起飛後設立的第一所公立大學，其設校宗旨在於平衡長年不足的雲林、嘉義、臺南地區高等教育資源，帶動區域整體發展。

The university has seven colleges and roughly 11,500 students taught by some 728 academic staff, and in the 2027 QS World University Rankings it was placed in the 1001-1200 band.該校設有文、理、社會科學、工、管理、法、教育七個學院，學生約一萬一千五百人、專任教師約728人，並在2027年QS世界大學排名中位列第1001-1200位區間。

History

• In 1986 the Executive Yuan approved a plan to establish a new university in the Yunlin-Chiayi-Tainan region, where higher education had long been thin, and proposed naming it after the late President Chiang Kai-shek in his centenary year.1986年行政院通過決議，在高等教育長期薄弱的雲嘉南地區新設一所大學，以回應地方對高等教育的長期期待；時值蔣中正前總統百年誕辰，院會遂建議以此命名，使設校同時具有紀念與教育的雙重意涵。
• In February 1987 a preparatory committee was formed under Vice President Lee Teng-hui, Minxiong Township in Chiayi County was chosen as the site, and Lin Ching-Jiang was appointed head of the preparatory office, which opened in December 1987.1987年2月成立籌備委員會，由時任副總統李登輝擔任召集人，擇定嘉義縣民雄鄉為校地，並聘請林清江博士出任籌備處主任；籌備處同年12月正式成立，隨即展開校地徵收、規劃與建築等各項籌建工作。
• On 1 July 1989 the university was formally founded, and from 1 August 1989 it borrowed the Minxiong campus of Chiayi Teachers College, now National Chiayi University, as its first temporary home.1989年7月1日中正大學正式創立，自同年8月1日起先借嘉義師範學院（今國立嘉義大學）民雄校區作為初期校地，暫時安置師生，直到自有校園逐步落成啟用。
• On 18 October 1989 the first university council meeting adopted the university emblem, its school song and the charter of the faculty evaluation committee, and on 31 October the first anniversary celebration was held.1989年10月18日召開第一次校務會議，通過校徽、校歌及教師評審委員會組織章程，同年10月31日舉行第一屆校慶，確立了學校的象徵與基本制度。
• On 30 October 1991 the newly built campus was officially inaugurated in a ceremony combined with the third anniversary of the university.1991年10月30日新建校區舉行正式啟用典禮，並與第三屆校慶合辦，象徵學校由借用他校校地正式邁入自有校園的新階段。
• On 18 January 1992 the first graduate students received their degrees, and on 9 October 1992 the first cohort of undergraduates held its opening ceremony.1992年1月18日首屆研究生畢業，同年10月9日首屆大學部新生舉行開學典禮，研究與大學兩級學制的完整體系自此確立。
• In 1997 the university hosted the 28th National Intercollegiate Athletic Games, one of the largest sporting events in Taiwan, drawing thousands of athletes to Chiayi.1997年該校承辦第28屆全國大專院校運動會，這是臺灣規模最大的體育賽事之一，吸引數千名選手與隊職員齊聚嘉義，也讓新建校園首次在全國大型活動中亮相。
• On 29 October 1998 the university gymnasium was officially opened, providing a main indoor venue for sport and ceremonies on the Minxiong campus.1998年10月29日體育館正式啟用，為民雄校區的體育競賽、體育教學與各類大型典禮提供了主要的室內場館。
• In 2005 CCU hosted the 34th National Intercollegiate Athletic Games, but in November that year it failed to win a place in the Towards Top University programme, prompting protests by staff and students who marched to the Ministry of Education.2005年中正大學承辦第34屆全國大專院校運動會，但同年11月未入選「邁向頂尖大學計畫」，引發師生不滿，教務長率師生北上教育部抗議陳情，成為校史上著名的一段爭取歷程。

Academics

• CCU is organised into seven colleges, those of Humanities, Sciences, Social Sciences, Engineering, Management, Law and Education, and these contain 29 departments and 53 graduate institutes and programmes.中正大學設有文、理、社會科學、工、管理、法、教育七個學院，下轄29個系所與53個研究所暨學程，是一所學門涵蓋人文、社會與科技的綜合大學。
