Nanjing Normal University, abbreviated NJNU and written in Chinese as 南京师范大学, is a comprehensive public university in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province, that keeps a distinct tradition of teacher education while covering the humanities, social sciences, sciences, engineering and the arts, is affiliated with the provincial government, is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and Jiangsu Province, and is a member of both Project 211 and the national Double First-Class plan.南京师范大学（英文 Nanjing Normal University，简称 NJNU）是一所坐落于江苏省省会南京的公立综合性大学，保留鲜明的师范教育传统，学科涵盖人文、社会科学、理学、工学与艺术，由江苏省主管、中华人民共和国教育部与江苏省人民政府共建，是国家“211 工程”与“双一流”建设高校。

Its principal root reaches back to the Sanjiang Normal School founded in 1902 while a second root runs to the University of Nanking, opened as the Nanking Academy in 1888 and reorganised in 1910 as the first institution in China to be officially called a university in English, and by 2020 the university had grown to 28 colleges and schools across three campuses, teaching 18,369 undergraduates and 12,564 graduate students, among them 1,525 doctoral candidates.学校主源可追溯至 1902 年创建的三江师范学堂，另一源流是 1888 年以“汇文书院”开办的金陵大学（University of Nanking），它 1910 年改组为中国第一所冠以英文“大学”之名并在美国纽约州注册的高等学府；到 2020 年学校已有 28 个学院和学系，分布在三个校区，在校本科生 18,369 人、研究生 12,564 人（其中博士生 1,525 人）。

History

• The history of the university can be traced to 1902, when the Qing government founded Sanjiang Normal School in Nanjing, an institution whose name, Sanjiang, referred to a historical province that roughly covered the three modern provinces of Jiangsu, Jiangxi and Anhui.学校的历史可追溯到 1902 年清政府在南京创办的三江师范学堂，“三江”指清代一个大致覆盖今日江苏、江西、安徽三省的历史政区名。

• The education section of the National Nanjing Higher Normal School ran from 1914 to 1923, first under the principal Jiang Qian, an early reformer of normal education, and then, from 1917, under Tao Xingzhi, who headed the education-specialty programme and went on to become one of the most celebrated educators in Chinese history.国立南京高等师范学校教育科自 1914 年至 1923 年设立，先由师范教育改革的先行者江谦主持，1917 年起由陶行知执掌教育专修科，陶行知后来成为中国近代最著名的教育家之一。

• Campus life is organised around about 180 recognised student organisations and clubs, and students may found new ones to serve their own interests, subject to the consent of the relevant departments and the approval of the university party committee, with the Youth League committee helping to connect them.校园生活围绕约 180 个经认证的学生社团与团体组织，学生可依兴趣新设社团，但须经相关院系同意并经校党委批准，共青团委员会负责协助对接。
